Forum Update

Hi Folks,

I want to give you an update on our progress with the Cool Running forums. I've read several complaints that the progress has been slow and I am hoping you will give us a pass since these two weeks are consumed with Christmas and New Years. Nevertheless we continued working on improvements and you'll begin seeing results real soon.

First and foremost the biggest complaint surrounds logging into the system. This is a bug that we did not anticipate and when we transitioned over. This is our top priority and I want to assure you that we are working on resolving this problem. We have also received other suggestions such as improved navigation between forums, changing the width of the forum page and adding a signatures feature. One of the first changes you'll see is new navigational tools added next week.

We will also be posting polls on various suggestions to gauge their importance among community members. The will help us in prioritizing. I can't promise we can deliver on all of your suggestions, but I promise we will let you know the reason if we cannot.

Our new forum software has a host of features that were not available previously. Below is a list of what is available to you. Our plan is to continue to add to this feature list based on the input we get from you.

  • Blog - We finally have a blog tool and it has some neat features.
  • Rich Text Editor - Great for cross platform exchange of documents. I used it to produce this post.
  • Image picker - This feature allows participants to choose or upload an image and position it within their post.
  • Attach files - you can now attach photos, videos, documents to your posts.
  • Include images - Many of you are already including images in your posts.
  • Embed Active or YouTube videos -I can see a lot of uses of this feature such training videos, race reports, etc.
  • User Profiles & Directory - We had this in our other forum, however it was an add-on. Now it is fully integrated.
  • Search forum contents - Because our old server could not handle the load we had to shut off this feature. The Active search is much more robust.
  • Search for users based on profile content - Another neat search feature.
  • View as PDF - Ability to save the discussion as a printable document.
  • Tag clouds - Provides a visual depiction of tags with the most popular being larger.
  • Tag filtering - View of messages by tag.
  • Personalized RSS - You can now feed of your posts for syndication to other blogs and websites.
  • Personalized email notification - This is one of my favorite features since it lets me know when someone has replied to my post. BTW this feature can be turned off for those who do not want to receive notification.
  • Automatic content relation and suggestion - System automatically searches and displays suggested and related threads.
  • Avatars - You can now include an avatar from our library or use you own customized avatar.

When Kevin and I started Cool Running 13 years ago it was because we were both avid runners - we still are! We want this site to continue being all about running. I promise that we will continue to work to make Cool Running the best running site possible. My hope is that you will continue to keep the discussion on our boards about running since this is the reason we are all here on Cool Running. For those who have suggestions on improving this community please feel free to post them in on the Suggestion Box - we are reading them. And for those trolls who are bent on the destruction of this forum . . . well I'll keep those thoughts to myself since it is the holiday season.http://community.active.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif

Thanks for listening and I'll post another update when we have made further progress. Happy New Year!

Re: Forum Update

Dave,

With all due respect, the main complaint has not been having to log in to the site. The reason for the mass exodous is the training log. You either have not been reading, or are not paying attention. You are running a business here. Christmas & New Years is not a valid excuse for this debacle. You've had plenty of time to stop the bleeding.

"You either have not been reading, or are not paying attention."

I think it's you that hasn't been reading or paying attention. The subject of the post was "Forum Update" not "Running Log Update".

I have selected "no" to all the email options in my preferences and I am still receiving emails, including those to which I have not posted....such as this post of yours and the two prior replies to it by bdags061 and dg262.

So, just how do I turn them off?

This is what I stated:

"With all due respect, the main complaint has not been having to log in to the site. The reason for the mass exodous is the training log."

Are you disagreeing with my statement? They need to concentrate on the main issue....the log.

Edit to add:

dg, Since you just created your account today, I have to assume you're a sock puppet acting on behalf of active/CR.

Re: Forum Update
Dave:

Sorry that your decision to take on your transition during the holiday season didn't work out well for you.

You didn't mention the log at all - as others pointed out, the bulk of the backlash here has been regarding the data transfer problems and functionality of Active Trainer. Are you reading the posts Dave? You still don't seem to realize why people went to coolrunning.com - and it really doesn't seem to matter anymore. You are ignoring all of that feedback - and labelling those who criticized the "migration" as trolls. It's not about the forums - it's not about the news and other things you have strangely decided to leave available in a coolrunning interface - it's about the LOG Dave! If any of the others posting feedback are like me - they probably never posted much in forums on the old site - it's been the problems associated with this transition that have led people to taking up posting here.

It really doesn't matter at this point - you and Active have alienated plenty of runners - and plenty of people who logged onto your former site religiously in the past.

You blatant refusal to even try to justify turning away your former Coolrunning Log users (and assuming they would use a tool that has a fraction of the same of the functionality yet is infinitely more difficult to use) is a slap in the face to those who counted on your site.

Oh and Dave - you posted your message outlining a bunch of arcane Web 2.0 features (that it seems few have requested - and I am sure almost everyone would trade for a real running log) in every forum except the Suggestion Box (that place where you asked people to provide feedback) and Active Transition (where most of the users have been providing you with feedback on this fiasco). Very symbolic of talking and not listening....

I have had it Dave - I am tired of checking this site each day to see if anything would change - I am sorry I have been critical/blunt - I am moving on to runningahead.com (because of the LOG Dave!) - have fun with your new features!

I will keep running and look forward to my first marathon in 2008.

Thanks to you and Kevin for all you did with coolrunning - it's too bad you have to start all over under this bloated and beta Active infrastructure.....

Re: Forum Update

Honestly, forum updates are nice but in the end..........It is all about the LOG.

Running more then any other sport relies on using a log.

Re: Forum Update

I have the notification feature turned off also. I am still recieveing e-mail from this site like you would not believe. If I even LOOKED at a thread I get an e-mail that someone posted that thread.. This is outright irresponsible. My e-mail box can only hold so much and I am really getting sick of erasing all of the messages. Did this place hire trained monkeys to write the code? What gives? Seriously. Thousands of message boards are run everyday without a hitch. This one cannot figure out how to code true/false logic statements? WTF? Take it down and don't put it back up until it's fixed.

Re: Forum Update

There are two issues, the log AND the forums. I didn't use the log. Don't assume that the log is the only reason for the dissatisfaction. Dave is addressing the forum issues in his post. I don't see a problem with that.

But the main issue is Active's lack of preparation, communication, etc. This migration was terribly managed. I hate to say it, but the proof is in the pudding. I would say that over 99% of the comments have been negative.

Dave ... Active decided to do this right before the holidays, so I really can't cut them much slack. There has been very little communication from Active. Even with the holidays going on it would have been simple to post a daily update of what is being worked on and status.

Active still has not clearly set our expectations, therefore it is impossible to meet or exceed them. That is a setup for failure.

They need to start communicating clearly, frequently, and honestly, and they need to start now.

Re: Forum Update

Other than the email notifacations that I just learned how to turn off I haven't had any problems with active. People complain about logging in but I haven't had a problem logging in yet. So Long as I don't run into the same problem as willa with the email thingy I'm saying active is OK in my book!

I would never trust an online log like CR's ,RA's or active's. From experience I know web server's are buggy and just not trust worthy. I take my logs too seriously to put in the hands of a few IT guys. This transition here proves how frustrating it could be. For all you folks throwing all your eggs in the "Running Ahead" basket keep in mind what happened to you trusting in CR's logs. Don't think it can't happen to you over at Running Ahead. I'll keep my software and spreadsheets that I have complete control of.

That's why you need to periodically export the data.

Re: Forum Update

Yeah usually they(online logs) have a feature where you can back up your log which is nice but it still doesn't change the fact that they can put the kabosh on your log at any time. You can have your information exported whereever you like on your hard drive but you have no control of the actuall log istelf. It isn't yours you are simpy using it. Also keep in mind that CR, RA and the like offer these logs for free, for your enjoyment. You aren't paying for that service so you really have no right publicly slamming them for changing it or taking it away. The software I use I paid for, it is mine to own. I back up the entire application. I had a computer issure some time ago and lost a lot of my programs including my runlog software. I slaped in the backup disk and it restored the entire program with it's contents(up till the point of back up of course). The software reminds me every week to back it up and is was in the purchase agreement that it is my responsibility.

The only thing I like about online logs is that you can share your information which I can't do with my software. But with message boards I guess I can share enough about my training anyways.

Runawayjesse,

The point is that the new log is the reason people are leaving. They provide these free logs to get people to come to the site daily....creating "hits" which boosts advertising revenue. I don't think many people would leave based on the forum issues alone. Those can be fixed.

Re: Forum Update

Than they ought to fix their logs. Wht couldn't they have done like Runnersworld and used Running Ahead's training log. I mean they could have used Active for the forum board upgrade and RA for their log.

Just a thought did anyone check out the log at athleticore.com? You can veiw Elite's logs like Brian Sell's and such. Pretty cool!

Well, I assume the new forum software does exactly as you claim, but the problem is if you are going to advertise those feature you better freakin' enable them. The search forums content and the email notifications are NOT enabled now as you have advertized. How do I know? Well, I rely on these and have looked and looked for them and they don't currently exist (12/30/07). I went to my profile and noticed that ALL the email notifications are enabled, yet I have not received a SINGLE email in response to my new posts or a response to my posts!!! The search tool is critical to these forums as there are so many previous discussions that could help the forum users!

I know you guys are trying.....but I can sense that patience is running out (no pun intende)!!!! If these features are inherent to the forum software, why not enable them immediately and make huge strides (again, no pun intended) to improving the confidence in your new site?!?!?!?!?!?
