Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Just did a short half hour swim today... the year is not over though, hopefully I'll get some workout done tomorrow as well.

My main goal for 2008 is to complete a Half Ironman (Jun 1st). And, related to that, to learn to swim (that's the winter plan). Other than this, no real goals, maybe just PR'ing on as many distances as possible.

In the previous thread, Glue was asking what a tempo run is. It's an average length run where you run at the AT pace (that should be just where it starts being incomfortable). You have 3 types of runs: long, tempo and speed.

hey everyone, just got back from my run 13 miles today in 2:15:04. Looks like I'm no where near pr for this years race! My pr is 1:54, but that was 2 years ago. I'm proud just to be at that milage again. Joe it rained on me from mile 3 to mile 7 then it got cold. Sorry for no shout outs but I'm freeezzzzing cold and going to take a hot bath.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Well got 8.1 miles in today at 9:17 pace. I downloaded a new Steve Runner podcast and started running only to realize I have heard it before. I have listened to four (4) total and of course I downloaded one that I have heard. DW ran with me but also wanted to listen to music today. She is pushing much harder and needed to listen to music, this was her longest run to date.

Peg - take the stars and run. You deserve 5 stars for all the trouble you went through.

Chuck - great run!!! When is the last time you pushed out a HM distance?

I will post my three goals tomorrow for 2008. take care.

I forgot, the new shoes (Mizuno Wave Rider 10) were good. They were light and had great cushion. I will give more feedback as I get some mileage on them.

runjr, I ran the pensacola HM Feb of 2006 and got sick not long afterward. Started back running last summer. It's great to be back at double's.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th
A useful rule of thumb for Tempo pace is what you could race for an hour, but that is for a 20-minute tempo. If you go longer, the pace slows down. If you go shorter, that's still the pace, but you do multiples. So instead of 20 minutes you might do 4 X 5 minutes, but with 1 minute break per five minutes of running, so it would be 4 X 5 with 1 minute break.

The newest Steve Runner podcast was a year in review. All but the talk in between you should have heard before. It was still fun to hear some of it again.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Oh yeah. Definitely a stop/walk. As the season progresses -- and we vary our training based upon what part of the season we're in -- we'll do 2 X 20 with a 4 minute rest, which can be brutal, mentally as well as physically, although I find the second 20, even at the same pace, is easier than the first.

I like to do Tempos on the track, because I can monitor my pace. But an alternative is to use GMaps-Pedometer to measure local courses and use that. One caveat, however. There is a school of thought that Tempos should be run entirely by feel without worrying about the pace, using the fast-but-not-too-fast idea. To a large extent it's a matter of personal preference.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

chuck - That was a great run. You should feel happy. Congrats again, 13 for me is a few weeks away. This weeks long run should be about 11. Take care and get your rest.

Joe - Yes we both have Ipod's. We keep the volume low to chat, but sometimes when the running is tough the volume gets turned up.

mara40thon - maybe I stopped the Steve Runner too soon? I will have to look at it again.

take care all.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Hello everyone! I ran my 10 miles today. WooHoo! That's my first double digit run. I'm so excited. I ran it in 2:09. Not fast, but I finished it.

Runjr, wasn't it a great day to run? 30 degrees and no wind. And that snow was beautiful. Fortunately for us it fell Friday night and was mostly cleaned up. You had a great 8 miles, and a good pace. You're still faster and longer than me, but I think our goals are a little different. I really haven't thought about revising my goals for running. I've just gotten to one of them; as I've said before, to run for a couple of hours. I could run it faster, but that's, I'm sure that's why coach has me doing those hill repeats.

Yeah I'd like to weigh in with my 2 cents on the tempo run subject. I tend to agree with Chris that it's not the race pace for a tempo. It's all about a faster pace but certainly not killing yourself. It's interesting, coach has had me do 2 different kinds of tempo runs. Actually the same 'kind' of run, just different timing. On my hour runs, I'll run the middle 20 minutes at a faster, harder pace. In my 75 min runs he'll have me run the last 15 min. at a faster harder pace. I definitely prefer the faster pace in the middle of the run, although for a real race, I'd expect I'd want to run my fastest at the end.

Hey chuck, that was a great 13 miles. You blew me away time wise, same time for 3 more miles. LOL. Good for you!

Peg, nice to see you've solved you're log in problems.

I've got the day off tomorrow. Ahhh! Happy new year everyone, and good luck with your runs!

Kevin

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Hi everyone, did a strength training video today, and plan on running tomorrow. Gonna play cards with some friends tomorrow night and drink alittle. Hope everyone has a good New Years Eve.

My goals for the new year are to get my milage back up to 20 miles a week and lose 10 lbs. I also want to do some serious strength training on my arms, I've found that by focusing on my running the last couple of years my arms are not looking all that great.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th
Hi peeps... I really don't seem to be able to keep up with you guys at the moment - how did you get to three pages before I managed to get a post in?!?

Still no running for me - my cold is improving, but now in my chest so best to give it a couple more days. It's pretty disappointing seeing as I was doing so well in my training. Last week was a cutback anyway (although a little more cutback than planned) so no big deal but really want to get my runs in this week - I might try tomorrow and get my stepper out today to see how I go.

Hmm - goals for 2008 - do my HM of course! and just to keep running really... Still planning to switch back to 10K and do some speed work, then decide if I want to do another HM towards the end of the year.

Unfortunately I don't know what my mileage for the year is, but i'm guessing it's around 375 - I only started running mid May with C25K, so i'm pretty happy with that

Just wanted to say happy new year to you all - hope you have a lovely evening with friends and family tonight and may 2008 bring you everything you wish for (and lots of running!) I have family down tonight so best go and get the house organised. Promise to send out personals next time http://community.active.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif

Joe / Laurie - I managed to post onto Monnik's blog as anon and told her we're missing her and to drop by sometime - hopefully she'll pick it up!

Happy running into 2008 http://community.active.com/images/emoticons/laugh.gif
