Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Happy New Year all, well I started the year out with the longest run to date. 11.1 miles at 9:19 pace.  Well in golf they tell you not to start in the rain, in running you shouldn't start in the snow, I didn't listen.   Light snow 18 degrees and windy, gusts to 15 miles.  The wind wasn't that bad as I took through numerous subdivisions.  I was happy and could have gone longer but I'm sticking to plan.

Thanks to this thread as I thought of all the great running done by all of you and wanted to post something decent.

Chuck - sorry to hear about Bella.  You are the first to post in 2008, you should get an extra star or asterisk.  Maybe next fall in Florida for a HM?

Peg - glad to hear you survived the New Years after the tequila.

Joe - good luck with your run today.  I will be watching football this afternoon.  Wisconsin is not looking to good against Tennessee.

take care all.   BTW I used the Wisconsin method of energy during the run, I ate a few Hershey kisses. They definitely won't melt here and they helped.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Got in 5.1 miles last night. One of my longest runs to date. I was going to quit after 4 miles and meet DW (saw somebody use that abrev. hope it means darling / dearest wife) back at the van. She had already beat me to the van and was running another lap anround the park so I decided to run another as well. The funny thing was,  about half-way through the last lap I started to feel pretty good andwhen we finally met back up at the van I was feeeling like I could go another few miles but alas my niece was watching our daughters and we had big New Years eve plans so we had to get home. I was kinda disappointed but am looking forward to next weekend. Running a 5K on Saturday and hope to get in an easy 6 on Sunday.

Stan - Your goal of being patient is mine as well. I need that with more than just my kids, wife, work and with life in general.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Happy New Year all !!! .. everyone`s goals look fantastic I am so proud to be part of this group - we just rock !!!

Congrats to all of you who ran your longest runs - ... and in the snow !!!!

runjr - can I steal you goal of running a race with someone from this group ?? .. I think that`s a fantastic idea - anyone planning to be in NY next year ?? Chuck I think you said you were planning to be here next winter right ??

Actually if any of you ladies want to run a race in NY - we have the Womens Mini - it`s a 10K race - the oldest womens only road race in the country - you get a medal and everything !! Maybe we can a plana  girls weekend )

Shelia - if you want any help on that upper body work out let me know !!! .. I`m something of an expert since that`s all I`ve been able to do for the past 3 months ! the good news is you can build upper body strength really fast if you work out right

JPG - as Joe said not everyone is newbies but I think most people came to this thread as they were getting ready for their first half -  even thought it`s been around for longer I think of the start of this as being when Joe took it over about a year ago - I guess since starting a lot of people completed their first HM so I think we now have a thread where a lot of people have done 1 or 2 halfs however I think we all love to see new members  training for their first half and have a lot to offer because for a lot of us our first HM was recent and we all learn from each other as we train and complete each race. It has been a fantasic group and I`m releived it survived the active transition - I hope we get back the few regulars we are still missing

My New Year is off to a good start - I did end up going to the gym the other day and spent an hour in the treadmill - I walked most of the time at 4.0 mph but I did 3 half mile "runs" throughout ... NO PAIN !!!! .. I have a rehab plan I found on the net whihc suggests that you are ready to start running again once you can walk pain free for 1 hour - so I am feeling very positive. Still keeping things sensible - have done 1 hour cardio every day since but no treadmill - stuck with the bike, elipitcal and little boxing

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

well my Gators lost, no DEFENCE at all. All is not lost , I ran my 3 miles scenic loop, very windy and cold. Managed a 26:50. Not bad with a hangover and the wind. Legs still tight from Sunday so didn't push, just enjoyed my first run of the year.

Spicegeek, yes I want to come to New York for Christmas next year.

well off for a hot bath

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

hi all, I'm glad I ran when I did as the conditions are getting worse outside.   It is 12 but with windchill -3.  Tomorrow will be inside as I won't run in single digit temps or lower.   It is a recovery day for cross training.

glueman - great run, way to go the extra lap.

Joe - good run, you are correct in your assumption.  We would have teased you for a trip to the gym.  Although in summer we have a tough time with the high humidity.   Way to stick it out and get the run in.  Take care.  These football games are turning out not as predicted.

spicegeek - I am happy your recovery is going well.

chuck - way to get your first run in the New Year.

take care.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

chuck, shouldn't last long only a few days.  By the weekend 40's, a heat wave.  I'm up for a HM in a warm climate this time next year.  Good thing their is a ton of football on.  I would have guessed that the Gators would have won big today.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

yes, I did to but they didn't play very well today. They're a very young team tho, Michigan played very well. Just wasn't our day. By the way 40's is not a heat wave for me, I like the 60's for winter. LOL

Deez, This may have been mentioned, but the software for the Garmin to use is SportTracks.  It's free, and I use it as my log.  MUch better than Training Center, which comes with the Garmin.

Chuck, Very sorry to hear of your loss.  We've been through it, and it is never easy.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYBODY!

So glad to be reunited with MONNIK!  Hope WBERTHA gets back to us soon!

Would you believe that I actually got choked up while reading all of your posts since yesterday?!?  I really appreciate all of your support & it's so nice to hear that you appreciate the support as well.  Thanks for sharing your goals for 2008.

Here are my fitness goals/plans for the year:

1. Persistence and consistency

2. First HM in April

3. Add cross-training and work with personal trainer

4. Be healthy and HAPPY with myself, my body (leaner & meaner!), my family & my work - with a balanced attitude and lifestyle

We really are a little family, aren't we?  How FANTASTIC!

CARA - Did you enjoy your family/company last eve?

JOE & PEG - Yes, it is cold!  Glad today was a rest day for me!!  Although I have 3.5M planned for tomorrow a.m.!  Brrrrrrrrrrr........

STAN - Enjoyed reading your goals - how old is your son?  Patience is a skill I also am working on (as is my almost 8 yo DD).  You too, GLUE?  Seriously cold in Midland/Odessa, eh, STAN?

MISSWENDY - Good for you - you have a great attitude & it's wonderful to see you continue to move forward.  BRAVO!  I'm attaching a document received from a friend about her traditional New Year's Feast!  We made all on the list, but the pork loin today, FYI.

JOE - What is "BQ" - I saw that in your earlier post in response to JPG.

PEG - I'm a vodka girl myself -- COSMOS!  YUM!  Although, tequila is good too - in a nice MARGARITA!

DEEZ - How was the "Hangover Classic?"  Love that name!  Proud of all of you that ran today!

RUNJR - Your goals are quite admirable - would enjoy participating in a run with some of the rest of you virtual running buddies!  You guys are great!!  Let's seriously consider a few races - throw some out there ALL and see what we can come up with - CARA - are you game? Sounds like you had a fabulous run today, RUNJR!  Good for you!!!  Umm...wind chill of -3.  Hope you stayed on the couch as planned!  EEK!

CHUCK - So sad to hear about Bella.  Thinking about you.  We will support you in your goals too - remember that nobody's perfect & we're all striving for improvement.

MACD - My goals mirror yours - completely.  Do I still have abs?  Hoping to find them soon - perhaps they come with a package deal...runner's legs plus abs...gonna require a lot more work for me, tho'.  My three little darling DDs have thrown me for a loop in more ways than one!  I'm guiltily looking forward to returning to work soon to get some "rest!"

SPICEGEEK - Am so proud of YOU for taking things slow...sounds like the healing is surely coming!  YAY!!!

Again, HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!  --Laurel

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Good morning everyone!  Welcome back to work .

I did my 6x 2 hills yesterday.  I did them a little smarter than last week.  I wasn't dead after the last 2 repeats.  Overall the effort felt better too!  I have a 30 min run set for this afternoon.  It'll be inside as my DD#3 wants to start running and since it's so cold she doesn't want to run outside.  So we'll go to the gym and I'm starting her on the 1st week of C25K on the treadmill (yuck! but at least she's running)  I'll run my 30 mins after.

Great to see everyone's kept up with their runs even through the holiday festivities.  I really liked reading everyone's goals for '08.  It encouraged me to think about mine.

1.  Of course finish my first half in May

2.  Run more races (I've only done 2)

3.  Run a sub-30 min 5K.

4.  Go injury free.

5.  Learn to say 'NO'

Good luck everyone on your running!  Have a great day!

Kevin

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

I like that welcome back to work face, Kevin! Great goals, too!

I only did 1.5 on the TM this morning, then thought perhaps I should be leaving a little early for work, since the roads weren't the greatest. It was a slow commute, but there weren't any cars in the ditches, which is always good. It was a whopping 1 degree, so I'm sure sub-zero with the wind chill... but they're saying 40s for the weekend, too weird. It sounds like Wisconsin is getting a similar pattern. runjr, I don't know how you run in it--and so fast! You're doing great!

Joe, we just switched from cable to dish to get the Big 10 Network--and DH signed an 18-month contract, so we'll just have to see how it goes. I suppose we could have both if we wanted to pay for them and mess with switching the connections (probably not!).

Laurel--I think you posted the new year's menu? I like that. My DH doesn't like corned beef & cabbage, the traditional meal around here, so we may try that next year. if I get ambitious enough to cook again, that is..

spicegeek, sounds like you are making your comeback! You've done an awesome job of cross training while your injury healed. The all-women's event sounds neat--when is it?

well, good running all... guess I need to get to work!
