Escape from Alcatraz 2008

I have recently won a lottery spot in the Escape from Alcatraz tri 2008. I am a fairly new triathlete and have only finished 5 sprint distance triathlons this past year. I am not a strong swimmer and have recently had shoulder surgery to repair a SLAP tear and a stretched capsule. I will not be able to get in the pool until march. Alcatraz is June 8th!! I am looking for any advice or encouragement from anyone that might have some.

Hey,

As a vetern swimmer with passed shoulder issues my advice is get a Physical Therapist if you don't have one...and kick in the pool with a kick board and without. It will help a lot and doesnt require you to pull.

Hey there,

Congrats on doing the race. You're going to love it. You have plenty of time w/ this training. Seriously treat it as a 1/2 iron though w/ the challenging bike and run and longer distance with the swim.

I ran across this dudes training blog for the site. Perfect for the 1st timer, since he's a 1st timer too. Cheers and have fun.

You are going to LOVE the race! It is a challenging fun race. You have plenty of time to train for sure if you are looking to just complete the race.

I would focus on strengthening your shoulders for March and April for sure using resistance bands (be cautious with weights). By using bands you can slowly build up the strength needed in the shoulders for swimming. Here is an example of some simple and standard band workouts for the upper body but a great place to start.( http://exercise.about.com/cs/exerciseworkouts/l/blbandworkout.htm)

The swim itself it is great because of the westward current in the bay pushing you to the golden gate bridge. Go to the pre-race swim briefing for sure to get tips and get super fired up.

Race smart and safe and enjoy the views, they are incredible!

Hello,

I just finished an article that might be of interest as you gear up for the race...it talks about the benefit of training in a group: Stay on Track by Tri-training With a Squad

Good luck!
