Re: The Long Haul - ACTIVE Style

I've just returned from my six mile run. I've been dreading this run for at least a month, probably longer. I just didn't have the confidence that I'd be able to finish it, despite having run five miles without any trouble. Amazing, the barriers and obstacles we build for ourselves in our minds.

I finished it without any trouble, and at a pace that was quite a bit faster than I expected. I averaged an 11:02 minute/mile pace, even through I was fighting to keep myself at a pace closer to 12:00 min/mi. I just didn't want to push myself so hard that I'd have to call it quits early, but it looks like my body was just ready to go. Now I'm kinda looking forward to my next long run. :)

I hope you're all having a great weekend and that you'll have a great week ahead.

Don

Re: The Long Haul - ACTIVE Style

Great job Don, six miles is a great accomplishment. I hope in 12 weeks or so I can make a 6 mile run.

Today when I went out towards the end of my 3 miles the side of my left knee started to hurt. I was within a couple blocks of the end so I ran it out until I was done. I thought for sure I must have messed myself up but by the time I completed my walk after the run my knee was fine. I guess it was my bodies way of saying enough!!

Re: The Long Haul - ACTIVE Style
Add me to the injured reserve. This stupid left calf of mine is giving me trouble again. I had to use the eliptical instead of running. I think my heart medication has something to do with the muscle pain. So I'm going to stop taking it. Don't panic Val! I'll take it if I start having chest pain. But this medication gives me a lot of negative side-effects. I have an apt with a new doctor in February so hopefully we'll get things straightened out. I did 50 minutes on the eliptical and lifted weights for 1 1/2 hours. I think that's good enough for today.

Re: The Long Haul - ACTIVE Style

Kimber, sorry you are having trouble with your calf. You probably did best by not running, just be careful not taking your meds.

Today I ran 2.5 miles in my neighborhood which is mostly hills!!! My time is still improving for the run. My heart rate got alot higher on this run than it did on the 6 miler yesteday, training on hills helps when you get to a race that is hilly.

Happy running all,

Frank N MIssissippi

Re: The Long Haul - ACTIVE Style

Kimber,

Sorry to hear about your calf. I agree, it is probably best to give it some rest. PLEASE be careful with the meds, we don't want Kimber to end up like the people she works with.

Re: The Long Haul - ACTIVE Style

I know, I know. I shouldn't fool with the medications but my current doctor's office is useless. Which means I have to stay the course with the medications until I see the new doc. I can't wait that long. I take 2 different meds. I've already changed one of them to every other day. I've been juggling them around, trying to fix the severity of the side-effects.

This picture is not of my leg but this is how bad my legs are swollen. When you push your finger into my shin, it leaves this big of a pit. I can't stand it. My left leg is worse and it's my left calf that's giving me problems. If I have problems without the drug, maybe I'll try to take it every 3 days. But for now, I'm stopping one of them.

Val, didn't I mention it's ok to walk? Why are you pushing yourself like this? You're setting yourself up for disappointment. Don't you remember what LRN said?

Re: The Long Haul - ACTIVE Style

Kimber,

Please take care of yourself. Val is scaring me with comments like "I just don't want you to almost die again". Nobody on the TLH group is allowed to die. ]:) I mean I have not even received the RoadID you scared me into buying.

Valerie, I know you will be starting a new HHST WK2 thread but how do you usually handle this thread? Do you let it grow forever or do we start new threads every week?

URGH. Don't get me started on LRN. The "other" forum does not deserve him.

Re: The Long Haul - ACTIVE Style
OK, you da boss, start a new one when you see fit, I will follow :D

Guys, I have decided to save up some cash. I have fallen in love with the Garmin forerunner 405 that will be coming out in sometime this quarter. The functionality of a 305 with the size and look of a regular sports watch. I want one BAD!! I wanted to make a forerunner my marathon present but I might not be able to wait that long. I am a tech geek.
I read the thread in another forum here about everyone leaving and many of the other forums are lifeless. Well, no one can deny we lost a lot of our regular people due to this transition but I see new people coming into Newbie Cafe everyday. I think this forum is where you go when you are new but as you become more regular you branch out to other forums. This forum and it's Newbies will eventually populate the other forums. The CR spirit is alive and will survive this transition to Active. Someday the Long Hauler's can say as if we are grandparents that we remember CR before it was Active. Hmmm, this happened before with me because I had a hotmail account before Micro$oft bought them.

Re: The Long Haul - ACTIVE Style
D'oh! All the funcationality of a 305 in a form factor that doesn't look like I duct-taped an iPod to my wrist? How cool is that?! Oh, well. I love my 305 and I'm not givin' it up just yet. Of course, if the wife starts running, we might just need to get her a 405 that slowly finds itself on my wrist more often than hers.... ]:)

Not much to report today. I did a half-hour or so on the elliptical, as it's my cross training day. I feel great after yesterday's run. I figured I'd be sore or that my ankle would be complaining, but no complaints to report. Mostly I'm just posting to bump the thread back to the first page.

Kimber - as others have said, please be careful with your meds. I just had a physical last week; your (near?)-death experience prompted me to make the appointment. Also, take it easy on the calf. I think I might have experienced (or at least posted/complained about) more running injuries than most of the Long Haulers, so I've been there and know your frustration. Incidentally, that photo you posted wouldn't be one you took at work, would it? I couldn't help but notice the tag....

Sorry to hear that your legs still aren't cooperating, Val. Stick with it and go slow -- you'll be back in the groove in no time. That said, I'm like you -- I tend not to count the run unless I've done it just as it's written. So far, I've been lucky and able to complete every run that I've tried. That can't last forever, though.

Re: The Long Haul - ACTIVE Style

Well, my day at work has been pretty busy so I have not been online very much. How is everyone doing. Myself it is my rest day but I am looking forward to getting out tomorrow morning. It has been raining here but it is over. This leaves the air feeling crisp and looking clean for a change. Though it is not much for the people in other areas of the country the mountains here have snow which is very nice on the eyes.

Re: The Long Haul - ACTIVE Style
I forgot to mention that I'm shifting my schedule a run for tomorrow rather than Wednesday. Seems we're having a heat wave -- tomorrow's supposed to be 60F! Sure, it'll be raining, but it's 60F!!!

Yeah, I'm excited. :)
