Re: Weight Watchers Runners - Jan 14-20
I'm anxiously awaiting Mel's race report...

DH and I are going to start going to the gym regularly again starting this evening.. at least 4-5 days a week. Surprisingly..I only gained 4-5 lbs since Sept-Jan and eating horribly during the holidays. I'm ready to get back on track now. Unfortunately...the gym has 30 min max on the cardio machines until the "rush" is over... It seems like there is a sign up sheet between Jan-March... you know when all the new people sign up for memberships.

Re: Weight Watchers Runners - Jan 14-20

How long do you normally run. I am still working on the under 30 minute programs so that would do me just fine.

I do hate to see so many people signup for memberships then quit and/or let it go to waste. I personally can't afford a membership at a gym that would meet my needs, 24/7 and local. So I have to use a treadmill or outside.

Good luck getting back into running and working out. My DW has been working out with me and it has helped greatly.

Re: Weight Watchers Runners - Jan 14-20

Mr_Tremor - I usually run anywhere from 40minutes - 1 hour...sometimes more if I have to do a long run indoors. The reason we love our gym so much is that there is a pool there as a well and we have daycare.... a huge plus since we take our 3 1/2 year old DD everywhere. The daycare closes at 9:00 PM during the week so it's pretty convenient for us.

Re: Weight Watchers Runners - Jan 14-20

Hi all! I finally lost 1.2 lbs this week! The holiday excess is starting to leave! I haven't run since Saturday's race. I hobbled around Saturday afternoon and evening and was feeling almost back to normal yesterday. It was my dad's birthday so we drove to see him and ended up eating out at a Mexican restaurant. I ate way too many chips. And then my husband wanted pizza for dinner! I'm back on track today though with a packed lunch for work.

nhmommy - that's great that you're up to 40 miles now! And glad to hear that your daughter is doing ok after surgery.

lifeintheparks - there aren't any strobe lights in our spin class, but it is dark in there. The walls are painted black and there's black carpet so it's nice to go in there early in the morning.

Bodacious - great job on the weight loss! When the race began on Saturday it was in the mid 30s and by the time we were done it was in the 40s. A few weeks ago it almost got up to 80 degrees! A running partner of mine is from London and her husband is from Scotland. I love to hear their accents! And as for ice baths - I don't literally put ice in the water, just run the coldest water to fill the tub. My husband likes to torture me and will occassionally come throw in a handful of ice in there while I'm sitting in it. I only do the cold bath if I've run around 9 miles or more. I have to say that they really do suck when you get in, especially if you've been running out in the cold. That's the hardest part. After about two minutes though, you go totally numb and it just feels like you're sitting in a warm bath (as long as you don't move). I stay in between 10 adn 15 minutes and immediately get into a hot shower. I can tell a difference immediately after I get out of the tub. I was a skeptic at first, but I'll never go back to not doing them!

stillplugginaway - good luck, I hope you get the score you wanted on the test. that's smart to practice it ahead of time. I remember when I was taking the GMAT for grad school I didn't get the score that I needed the first time. I was so stressed trying to study for it the second time. It didn't help that it cost $250 to take the **** thing!

Re: Weight Watchers Runners - Jan 14-20

I know, I know - it's not my race report... but I did just finish catching up with the posts from last week & today. Now I am off to write those race reports!

Karensfit4life - I was looking at your stats... I'm 36 & have a 12 yo & almost 3 yo (Feb. 9th he'll turn 3) & I also have a 5 yo too. I started WW at 180 & I am now at 136, 44lbs lost with 8 to go. I'm at lifetime but still want to hit my personal goal. I live in sunny Florida :) my husband & I have done Body for Life in the past, but I prefer WW now.

nhmommy - so glad your daughter did well with the surgery. I know they say it's a simple out-procedure but anytime your child has to have something done, it can be pretty stressful! congrats on your 40 mile week - that is awesome! as for the shoes... I've always been told that you should not have to break in running shoes, they should feel perfect from the first moment you put them on.

lifentheparks - the spin classes at my old gym had the dark room with strobe lights too but the YMCA does not - I prefer the dark room that's like being in a nightclub :) I am so proud of you for working out on your trip, that is so inspiring! You DID see me! We came in right about that time. It was so crazy when we got through the finish line (I'll explain more in the race report) and I should have told you my last name so we could have met in that area, I just had no idea how many people would be there! I really wish I could have met you! I had to laugh at your beach run attempt... I love the "idea" of running on the beach, but it's so hard in soft sand & of course the humidity & heat play a huge role too.

Happy - sounds like you've had a good weekend. I thought of you during the race & how you chat with other runners. I saw a shirt that you need to wear at your next race, it says "slow down, say Hi, I'm single" LOL

Bo - I still find it hilarious that you are British... it's just not how I imagined your voice. LOL woo-hoo on your 2 lb weight loss!!! For my long runs, I use the sport beans around mile 7-8 and again around 10-11 miles. I've read that you should use some kind of "fuel" if you are running over an hour. I'm interested to hear what the other long runners think.

pluggin - congrats on the weight loss this week - 0.6 lbs is better than nothing!

Brandyshea - great race report & loved the pictures! I don't know how you can do the ice bath! congrats on a great race!

I'll be back in a bit.... Melanie

Re: Weight Watchers Runners - Jan 14-20

Hi All,

Well I did get my full long run in yesterday and it was actually really fun and nice to run with different people in a new area. Today is a DOR for me and I have spent the day putting receipts into my tax software but am now in good shape for taxes - YAY. School starts next week so I have a mission this week to get it all complete (for our business) and I put a HUGE dent in it today.

Just like Happy we are in the middle of a big snow storm. Got about a foot of fresh snow today just when we had just got the sidewalks nice and clear for running - bummer!! This is a fall back week for me for mileage so I am very excited! Last week I did 7, 10, 4 and 14. This week its 5, 7, 4 and 10 - SWEET! Will get to personals tomorrow. My eyes cannot look at a monitor any more today. Colleen

Re: Weight Watchers Runners - Jan 14-20
It is great to meet you Melanie ;-) It sounds like we have a lot in common, LOL.

I did Week 4, Day 1 of the C25K today at lunch. WOWZA. That was the toughest workout yet! It really did kick my butt and remind me just how out of shape I have become :-( But I did push through it until the end. I am on my way to becoming more fit! I'm sure Wednesdays run will feel a little better (repeat of today). I'm feeling like such a light weight with all you inspiring ladies with my just under 2 miles, LOL. All you ladies ROCK!

Keep at it.

Re: Weight Watchers Runners - Jan 14-20

Well today was a very nice day. The spa here at the resort where I'm staying is really nice and both the massage and pedicure were wonderful. Did a nice 2 mile run today through this neighborhood near where I'm staying and then went to a spin class. I should have planned things a little better and went to a spin class and ran this morning and then had my massage this afternoon, but oh well it was still all really nice. I've found the address of a WW meeting tomorrow that I'm going to go to since I'll be flying back late Wednesday and will miss my regular meeting tomorrow. It's kind of intimidating the thought of going to a meeting while traveling because it's always so hard to stay on plan, but I'm kind of obsessive about knowing how I did. I don't have scales at home (or obviously while traveling) so when I go to a meeting I'm totally going in blind and it's always a suprise. I'm going to try to keep it that way for as long as possible otherwise I would be on the scales 24/7.

Mel glad to hear that was you that I actually saw ;) but sorry we couldn't meet. To be perfectly honest it's really easy for me to keep up the workout routine while on this trip since I'm traveling by myself it's something for me to look forward to. While I am still sad that BF ended up not being able to make it I've actually enjoyed myself way more than I thought I would. It's kind of fun being in a real city for awhile (although I'm not ready to give up my rural living ?:| ) I've eaten Sushi 3 of the last 5 nights and did even more shopping today.

Happy and Pluggin send some of that snow my way. I'm telling you guys the more we get the happier I am :)

Bo congrats on the WI. That is fantastic. You are going to be at goal before you know it.

Maxiemoo good luck getting back into the gym routine.

Brandyshea congrats on your weight loss this week.

Oh yeah, today I went to the outlet mall near here and bought this really cute Nike running skirt for only $10. It was a rockin deal I thought.

Re: Weight Watchers Runners - Jan 14-20

here it is... the long awaited race reports :p

Friday we went to the Disney Safari Fun Run 5K at Animal Kingdom. It was a little cool out but not too bad, it was funny to see all the runners in jackets, gloves & hats when the temps were barely below 60, I was a little cold but warmed right up once we started running. It was really neat to run through the Animal Kingdom park, I had never been there before and the sights were all new to me. I was a little bummed that a good portion of the race was on a back service road but we also got to see all the runners who were ahead of us as they ran past... that was fun! I ran the whole race with my cousin Stephanie and it was fun to see her husband as he passed us and then my husband as we passed him. The whole race was so much fun - lots of costumes and scenery to see and I couldn't believe it when the race was over, it just didn't seem to last long enough! I was so proud of DH - this was his first 5K! We got our medals & pictures and then boarded the bus back to the hotel. After cleaning up we took off for Animal Kingdom to visit the park. We had a great time & I highly recommend the Dinosaur & Mt. Everest rides if you go there! We also loved the safari jeep ride where animals are roaming in open areas and we saw more animals than ever before... the rhinos were a little too close for comfort though! LOL

Here's a pic of the four of us at the race start. We were wearing our Miles for Mike shirts in memory of our uncle Mike. I have the lion mask on, 2nd from the right next to my husband (just have to point out how cool my Firefly shoelaces are... they are made with reflective material)

100_2067.jpg

now on to the BIG race!
The morning started early at 3am - yes, that is THREE IN THE MORNING! we had to be on the bus by 4am & it was a good thing that we were early because they were boarding 2 buses at a time & keeping the lines moving - there were so many people and that was just at our hotel. We arrived at Epcot and made our way to the port-o-lets, didn't have to wait but a few minutes as there wasn't any lines. Then off to the staging area & into a sea of people and loud music playing - everyone was standing around waiting for the announcement to head to the corrals. They started announcing the waves shortly after we arrived and that's when we moved to the area where there was even more people and I think over half of them in line for the port-o-lets! I was so glad we stopped at the first ones!
We walked a ways to our corral and got settled in a good spot close to the edge - we had an hour before our start time. The weather was a little warmer than the previous morning and I felt comfortable which was nice. They were playing great music and it was fun talking to some of the other runners, reading all the shirts and seeing more men pee on the side of the road than I have ever seen before in my life! LOL There was quite a few women heading off into the wetland area too! We were in the third wave and when the countdown & fireworks went off the mass of people barely moved! It took us over 5 minutes to reach the start line.
so, off we went at a nice pace - I was sticking to Stephanie's pace which is a little slower than mine, so it was easy going for me... I was happy to talk, sing, holler, etc. The biggest drawback of being in the last wave is that it is also the wave with all of the walkers... we spent nearly all of the race trying to get around people walking or suddenly walking after a bout of running. I don't have anything against the walkers but boy, it was so frustrating trying to make our way around them. They would walk as a group 5-6 across and there was no getting through them, you'd have to run in the grass to get in front of them only to find yourself behind more walkers... that went on for nearly the whole 13.1 miles.
The best parts of the race were when we passed by people playing music, this was my longest run ever without my ipod, so I was missing my constant stream of favorite music. There were several people set up along the course with huge speakers and blasting music, getting everyone pumped up and it was so much fun. There was also a high school band and a steel drum band. We had a few "hills" on our course which were a little rough on this Florida flatlands girl, but it wasn't too bad. I thought of Bodacious when a few women behind me started chanting "we can do this, we can do this" and I turned to them & said "no, it's I love hills! I love hills!" and so I chanted that the rest of the way up the steepest of the inclines. Most of the hilly area was the on & off ramps on the Interstate and were difficult because not only did they go up (or down) they also sloped to the side which was something I've never encountered when running.
We got into the Magic Kingdom around mile 5 and it was so cool to run through the streets of that magical place. Characters and staff were cheering us on as we ran through Main Street, Tomorrowland, right through Cinderella's castle and through the colonial & western areas - music was playing, people were cheering, it was so much fun! Then we were on a very quiet stretch of service road with trees all around us and it was so quiet. Stephanie made a comment that it felt like a death march & several people around us agreed. There was one lone guy standing on the side of the road clapping as we went by... so nice of him to come out & support us! I couldn't stand the quiet and started hollering but no one else joined in - we were around mile 7 at this point and I was still feeling great.
At mile 8 Stephanie's IT band started acting up and she was really trying to push through the pain. We stopped so that I could take a bathroom break & she could have a chance to stretch her leg. When we started back up, her leg felt a little better but was still giving her a hard time. She would run for a bit and then fast walk... the funny thing is that her fast walk was WAY faster than I could walk, so I just slowly ran next to her when she had to walk. She did great though and really pushed through it, I kept telling her we could stop but she didn't want to do that. The last 4 miles seem to fly by for me. As we approached Epcot & the finish line, we could hear the crowds yelling and that was a great incentive. I kept encouraging Stef who was having a lot of pain, I don't know how she managed to run those last few miles. Running through Epcot was so much fun, lots of people, cheering and things to look at. I kept trying to find familiar faces but it was impossible with all the crowds. As we approached the finish line there was a woman with a bullhorn yelling out encouragements & would say the runner's name if she could see it... so we heard Way to Go Melanie & Stephanie! Then she says "Way to Go Stephanie *&@#$" (that's her last name, just didn't want to share it here :) ) the woman on the bullhorn was from Stef's YMCA & recognized her! so cool! We crossed the finish line at the same time and had our Donald Duck medals placed around our necks. I couldn't believe the race was over... it didn't feel like I ran that far, I was having such a good time and enjoyed the nearly 3 hour run so much! my time was 2:51:53
Now the race was over and we grabbed our water/food and started looking for Stephanie's husband. He was in the race too & he usually does a run/walk but he got in front of us and the last time we saw him was around mile 5. So, we are thinking that he must have finished before us and we were watching for him. What we didn't know was that he had stopped to use the bathroom and we passed him. When he rejoined the race, he never caught up to us. When he crossed the finish line 11 minutes after us & didn't see us right at the finish line, he thought we might still be running. Stef & I didn't know what to do because we couldn't find him, didn't have a cell phone, didn't have his bib number to check if he had finished or was with a medic or what. It was a bit stressful. I decided to go & look for my husband, parents & sister in the family reunion area (and make myself available if Trina came too!) So I walked around the family area for about 20 minutes and couldn't find anyone that I knew and decided to return to Stephanie. She & I returned to the area where the runners were coming in & kept searching for her husband. Finally we asked a volunteer if there was a phone somewhere so that I could call my husband & see if he knew where Stef's husband might be... the volunteer was so nice & offered his personal cell phone. I called hubby and he was on the bus back to the hotel (DH & I had planned to meet back at the hotel if we couldn't find one another) but he knew that Stef's husband had crossed the finish line because he saw him come in after us. whew! at least we knew he was ok. We started looking around some more for him and there he was - just 50 ft from where we had been standing! I'm telling you... there was so many people there! In fact, my parents & sister never made it to the HM, they were having a hard time getting into the Epcot parking lot. They had 12,288 finishers for the HM - not sure how many more that were not official finishers because they came in after the 3.5 hour time limit but I heard that there was 15,000 registered people. Now here's the cool part... of the registered finishers, there was 4,961 males and 7,327 females! I think it's awesome that there was a lot more women than men!
We headed back to the hotel where I hopped into a hot shower, got ready and DH & I left for Epcot to meet up with my parents, sister & her husband. I barely sat down for 10 minutes, just long enough to use my new The Stick I got at the expo (check it out at www.thestick.com it's wonderful!) which is probably why my legs started to get very sore quickly, I really should have rested longer. I ended up walking Epcot the rest of the day & then going to a late dinner till 11pm (remember, I had been up since 3am!) I was so exhausted and my poor body needed rest. My legs were killing me especially if I sat down & had to get back up or had to attempt stairs. I had pain in areas on my legs that are not usually sore, possibly due to the weaving around walkers and running at a different gait than usual. By the way Epcot has way too many stairs! It felt so good to sleep that night, I was out cold till 8am and my legs were a little achy in the morning but nothing too bad. We got home Sunday afternoon and I managed a nap and used my stick some more - today I feel really good and I'm ready to loosen up these muscles tomorrow on my first day of HM training for my next race in March. A nice & easy 2 miles are planned for the morning.

Here are a pic from after the HM... will have more when I order them from ASI-

100_2114.jpg

Stephanie & I had a GREAT time, so great in fact that we both signed up today for the full marathon on January 11, 2009 at Disney!!! Anyone want to join us?!

Also... saw so many cool slogans & sayings, one of my favorites was "Count your blessings, not your problems" good night! Melanie

Re: Weight Watchers Runners - Jan 14-20
Mel at last your report :) LOL just playing wiith ya! It was worth waiting for!

I have the stick! The stick is a wonder tool! Serious tho you should mention the foam roller to your cousin, I got one from the running store this weekend and OMG it hurts when I roll my IT, I can def feel where the problem areas are, I have been reading people posting good results came from using one, I gather it is like a real deep massage, it is early days yet but I hope to see the same results, I got an OPTP Pro Roller Soft and it was $29.95, the harder one I tried in the store was too intense, I could not bring myself to roll an inch! I know her pain tell her I send her hugs!

Awesome race report! if you liked the bands so much keep thinking about the Rock and Roll 1/2 :) The Disney marathon is tempting but it is probably too early for my first full, I will keep it on the list of possibles :) Your report scared me in a way LOL I am thinking there are 20,000 for the R&R 1/2, how will I find anything! And walkers arrgghhhh yes they should have their own seperate gun start! I guess we could always start further up in the field but I like starting at the back in the hope I can overtake those that went out too hard and fast.

Your photos are awesome, you are looking good! You must be proud of yourself, can't wait to see your action shots.

Brandy you made me die laughing when you said 'as long as you don't move' I am thinking that if I sat in the tub and then added the cold water it would not be as bad as having to drop my bod into cold water! Then I got to thinking that my cold water coming thru the pipes buried in the frozen tundra may be a different level of cold than say Mels FL cold water :) I know when my DH Aunt came for a visit and got herself some tap water she made the comment that we sure don't need ice in our glass up here and that was during the summer time. Anyhow next time I do a 'longer run' outside I will attempt the ice bath, oh my the things you all get me into :)

Happy moving that snow is a workout, I strapped on my HRM when I went out to shovel last week figured I may as well get something from the experience. A WW buddy of mine sent me the Indian dish idea below, I have not tried it yet but it sounds interesting, she has a sister living over in India at the moment so maybe that is where she got it from :)

Tracy:
1 can garbonzo beans drained and rinsed
5 or 6 roma tomatoes chopped...I use diced tomatoes too but it takes longer to evaporate the liquid.
1 small onion or half large coarse chop
olive oil
seasoning your taste: I use about 1/2 tsp of everything maybe 1 tsp + cumin cause I love it.
cumin, cinnamon, tumeric, ground coriander, mustard seed, gar masala, chili powder, red pepper flakes, salt
You saute everything start with the onions and beans and mustard seeds, then add the tomatoes and seasonings. Saute until somewhat dry.

Maxie the gyms are insane in Jan, the one on base had no parking spots left, not even th efar away spots! I hate to wish failure on anyone but I mutter under by breath why don't you all quit already :) It is sad that 90% of them will be gone in 6 weeks but it will be good to get some gym space back!

Lifen can you believe I have never had a massage or a pedicure! I have been deprived! I have a gift card for a spa up here so reading about your day wants me to get my butt to the spa!

K it looks like I am spinning on Thursday, maybe I should have a butt massage on Friday :)

Sorry for all the personnals I missed, I have to go sleeps need to be up early as the eye doc moved my precedure appt foward to 9.30, so there is no rolling out of here late tomorrow!

Night all
