total lack of motivation

I have been a runner (off and on) since 1978 (I am 54 years old now).
10 years ago I ran my first marathon, and in 2003 ran my 2nd. I have
also competed in numerous 5k, 4 mile, 10k, 10 mile and half marathon
distances. I considered myself an avid runner, and pride myself on what
I have accomplished in the past. I have had periods when I didn't run
(for various reasons), but only found the mean and motivation to get
back into it.

Over the last year my motivation has ben zero. I have tried all my old
tricks - registering for races, buying new shoes, going to bed earlier,
reading running magazines, etc. but I have ZERO motivation at this
point, and I don't understand why. I haven't been running hardly at all
since October, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I love to
run but I just can't seem to get myself up and out the door. I am so
jealous when I see people running down the road, and then when it comes
to thinking about getting out myself, I find some bs reason not to go.

Anyone have some tips and tricks to help this runner regain his motivation?

Re: total lack of motivation

denberg - I've been running off and on since 1968 and am 53 y.o. There were long periods of time (read years)(after college) (after injuries) etc that I had absolutely no desire to run. Why did it come back? I don't know. All I know is that part and only part of my identity is "a runner". I often hate doing the training but the reward is so sweet; that good feeling, beating the youngsters, setting masters' pr's, and competing against myself.

I'd say don't worry about it. It will come back. And if it doesn't; you've accomplished many years of running and you're not lesser for not coming back.

I've never gone for a run and regretted it. I've often not gone for a run and regretted it.

Re: total lack of motivation

Running comes and goes.

You want to run some days and others you don't

If you are an avid runner and love the sport then it should not have left you..

I assume something got in the way? Personal perhaps, injury?

However, if you are a runner at heart it will come back, that is my feeling, if it doesn't come back then it was never instilled in you, not to be condescending, but running is a hobby for most and the occasional person participates in it and then grows tired of it, very few in my experience are "runners", lovers of the sport, and the feeling and desire to run never leaves them unless something drastic happens...

That might be your case, or not, i'm not hear to lecture, just giving my opinion.
