Re: Team Snowman W3 Started Jan 27!!!!!

Hi All,

I haven't checked in for a while but I"m still keeping up with the program. I finished W3D2 tonight and it felt overall pretty good. I'm already looking forward to next week.

Gunner - sorry to hear about your knees. Hopefully the stretches you found online will help alleviate the pain.

I'm suffering from shin splints and ankle joint pain every time I start the runs for the first interval but then works its way out over time. Anyone have any good suggestions for avoiding this??

Good luck to you all...

Re: Team Snowman W3 Started Jan 27!!!!!

Good to hear from you, Amman95! I don't know much about shin splints or ankle pains but especially shin splints seem to be pretty normal for new runners. The Cool Running Newbie Wiki has lots of good info, including this article on shin splints.

I did Week 3 Day 3 tonight, yay! It went pretty well. I went to the gym for Pilates and I was pretty much set on going home after and then run on the weekend instead, but then I remember that I had visitors coming in this weekend, and that it would be nice to go back and post on the site about having it done! So I got on the treadmill and did it... Like others have said, it feels nice to be "accountable" to the rest of the group.

Re: Team Snowman W3 Started Jan 27!!!!!

I'm having minor knee issues too, but nothing too bad. They don't seem to bother me while I'm running, just later that day. I'm going to go investigate the stretches though - I don't want to do any damage! I think it might be the muscles around the knee pulling funny, but it's hard to tell.

W3D2 went well this morning. We had a massive thunderstorm last night, so I thought there might have been rain to contend with this morning, but the weather co-operated and it was dry and not too hot. I'm still breathing well in the 3 minute sections. I think there's some switch in my head that says "your going to be running for a while, let's make this easy". I hope it stays for the longer runs!

Re: Team Snowman W3 Started Jan 27!!!!!

Chiocciola - I found some good pics of IT band stretches on runningtimes.com. There were a few other sites too that I found helpful via Google.

I completed W3D1 today. I found that my W3 podcast didn't download correctly so I only had 8 secs of it. I tore through my car as I drove to the park to see if I had the written program - Thank Goodness I did. Of course I would much rather have someone tell me to run versus looking at my watch - there is nothing like a deflator to look at the watch and see you had more to go than you thought. :0

Of course I could not remember the simple intervals and I too ran the 3 min interval twice in each round. Matter of fact, I had the nerve to run the 2nd round's 2nd 3min interval 14sec more than I should have. LOL I was so determined not to look at my watch that I just kept pushing. I knew something was wrong because I was trying to calculate the times in my head and the entire thing seemed too long since W2 was 30 min total. I didn't want to get back to my car to discover that I WAS supposed to run the darn thing twice. My heart rate still hits the 170s, but the last interval I really kept trying to find that comfortable zone and slow it down. My legs work so much harder to run slower though. This was the first day that I was able to run in the day time (approx. 4:30pm) - the sun was killing me. Since I have been running in the dark, I am like a vampire dying in the sun.

I will do D2 on Sunday.

If you don't have one already - check out www.roadid.com. I bought an interactive ID a week ago for my shoe and will probably go back for a wrist ID. Saves having carry ID on you and it allows you to put all your health info in the event of an accident.

Toodles.

Re: Team Snowman W3 Started Jan 27!!!!!

Thanks for the links Chiocciola. I found some good streching information which helps to build up the muscles which cause shin splints so we will see if it helps. I also ordered a couple of running books last week. Running for Women and the Running Handbook. I want to read more about shoe fitting, other training programs, etc. I have run off and on over the years but I really want to commit to sticking with it this time and training right.

Congrats on finishing up week 3!! I finished W3D3 tonight and it was great. I'm finding it to get easier and easier. Of course tonight may have helped because I bought a new 32" tv to hang in front of the treadmill. I was so tired of staring at the wall and watching television made the intervals fly by!!

Hope to see you on Week 4.

Good luck to everyone else finishing up week three...

Re: Team Snowman W3 Started Jan 27!!!!!

Yippee! I did W3D3 today too. It went so much better than D2! I didn't have too much difficulty breathing or with shin splints. I also managed to drop five pounds this week. I guess it was just my muscles finally letting go of that water! I'm hoping to start week 4 tomorrow before the game.

Thank you all for your ideas, motivation and support!

Re: Team Snowman W3 Started Jan 27!!!!!

I just complete my W3D2 run. Gosh! That was a lot easier than D1 since I did double the work. :p Since it was sunny (although I can see the clouds coming in) I had a nice view of the mountains when I had to cross the wash. This time I tried to breath into my stomach rather than in my chest - I am just not getting enough air breathing in my upper chest (I got that tip from the new issue of RW).

I am feeling a little under the weather today. I hope I don't get sick because that would... well... suck. I have to drive into the city to pick-up my daughter from her Dad in a couple of hours. I am hoping the drive will be smooth since the Superbowl will be well underway in the North Valley.

Re: Team Snowman W3 Started Jan 27!!!!!

I've finished week 03 as well. I had a good session this morning at the gym. I parked about two miles away and walked the rest. Did my weights then hit the treadmill for week 03 d3. I'm still not quite brave enough to start running outdoors although I will have to for week 04 d1 as my gym is shut due to it being a public holiday here in New Zealand.

I'm really enjoying this program and am really glad to see that so many of you are still managing to stick with it. I'm sure we can do it!

I've been blogging about my progress here if anyone is interested.
