"Wrong Ball Coach" Trick Play

I just watched this video and had to hear what other people think about it. The team in red pulled the "Wrong Ball Coach" trick play and absolutely no one saw it coming. The center snaps the ball to the quarterback, who holds the ball up in the air as he yells "wrong ball coach...it's the wrong ball" and walks towards the sideline. Then you hear someone yell "GO" from the sideline and the quarterback turns and sprints all the way in for a touchdown. I hadn't seen this done before and am not sure if it's even legal or not, but since the center snapped the ball I think it should be.

What do you think? Is the play legal? Have you ever seen a team run the "Wrong Ball Coach" trick play or anything like it before?

Re: "Wrong Ball Coach" Trick Play

Yes the play is legal. As a coach we ran it one time during a HS game, but instead of the QB keeping it as shown in your video we had the QB hand it off to the split end and he took it to the house. I can still see that CB that was covering the SE playing with his mouth piece when the SE went past him. I had heard about it from my coaches in college but of course we never ran it. The coaches said it was to bush league :)

Re: "Wrong Ball Coach" Trick Play
Actually, this play is most definitely NOT legal under NFHS rules. Officials don't always know the rules and sometimes allow this type of play to go off, but when they do, it is a mistake.

Rule 9-6-4-e states that "It is illegal participation: ... To use a player, replaced player or substitute in a substitution or pretended substitution to deceive opponenents at or immediately before the snap or free kick."

Furthermore, rule 9-9-3 states "Neither team shall commit any act which, in the opinion of the referee, tends to make a travesty of the game." While that doesn't directly address your play, I believe that every rules board that has reveiwed these types of plays where players act as if they are leaving the field, has determined them to be illegal. In fact, I believe the case book adds something like this to its comments about rule 9-9-3:

"Football has been and always will be a game of deception and trickery involving multiple shifts, unusual formations and creative plays. However, actions or verbiage designed to confuse the defense into believing there is problem and a snap isn't imminent is beyond the scope of sportsmanship and is illegal."

And, yes, your college coaches were correct - it certainly is bush league.

I completely and whole heartedly disagree with you summary.

All of your rule quoting deal with trickery before the ball is snapped.

The center snapped the ball. This ball is LIVE and in play, it is the DEFENSE's fault that they did not move when the ball was snapped. Poor coaching caused that play to work.

Re: "Wrong Ball Coach" Trick Play
Actually, I have talked with a number of referees and have been told that the NFHS (National Federation of High Schools - the governing body that writes the rule book) has reviewed the subject play and determined it to be illegal. So, this isn't my opinion - this is what the people that actually write the rules are saying.

Perhaps poor coaching caused the play to work (poor coaching also caused the play to be called in the first place ;) ), but it is still illegal. It is what it is (i.e. illegal) - it's really not open to debate.

Re: "Wrong Ball Coach" Trick Play

Not a "TRICK PLAY AT ALL"! It is an illegal play...

Although very humorous. We should be teaching our youth the "Spirit of the Game" no matter what thesport and plays like this are illegal and take away from the spirit of the game. That takes away from our youth and building them a solid future. If this was a Social Flag Football game or the annual family Turkey Bowl, this play would be an offensive coordinators dream play.
