Re: The iPod conflict brews in racing

The paragraphs below were copied from the web page of our Sunburst Marathon event in May. Notice the headphone rule.....

MARATHON

Start downtown at the College Football Hall of Fame. Run through South Bend and Mishawaka parks and neighborhoods along the St. Joseph River. The course is flat compared to most marathons, with a few short steep hills and one half mile incline.  The course follows a shallow river bottom, which results in the hills.   The course is not as flat as the Chicago Marathon. It is significantly flatter than Portland, Nashville, Marine Corps, Dallas and Amarillo. It is similar to Cleveland and Detroit.

Traffic-free city streets, USATF certified (#IN03003MW), Boston qualifier.

No strollers, baby-joggers, or rollerblades in run events.

Headphones are allowed; please be careful.

HALF MARATHON

Runners will follow the same first 3 miles of the regular marathon route, then turn at approximately Mile 3 past Keller Park and back onto the Marathon course. At the end of the bike path. half-marathoners will Niles Avenue and on to the campus of the University of Notre Dame.

No strollers, baby joggers, or rollerblades in run events.

Headphones are allowed, but please, be careful.

Re: The iPod conflict brews in racing

That 11 minute pace would be awesome at JFK.  MCM might be a little faster than that.  I want to push it just a little.  I will probably run MCM at around 8:30 miles.  I want to push my training out there a little bit for JFK.  I plan on being out on the course at JFK for around 10 hours, though I would love to finish it in 9:30, I just don't think it would be worth it to ruin my day to improve my time by a half hour?  So, when I run Baltimore and MCM I will pick up my pace a little.  That way, when I run my goal pace for JFK, I will have my fitness where I want it.  I think I will do Baltimore in 8:50 miles, and MCM at 8:30.  Believe it or not, I really don't like obsessing over splits, but I kinda have to, to keep my training where I need it to finish 50 miles.  Kind of like doing pushups every day, to keep your fitness up for the PT test.  You do hundreds of them, way more than is required of you, then when the test arrives, you smoke it because your confidence tells you that you can.  I hope this back injury of yours lets you get back out there to tear up those races this year.

LOL.  "Heckler and K.o.c.h." (not sure why that got bleeped.)

No I don't wear that stuff to bed - anymore.  But the Sig is within arms reach and H&K is in the safe.

Streaming the Dead now, Golden Hall Community Concourse, San Diego.  5 August 1970.  All acoustic.  All is chill, all is well.

Heh!! That makes no sense here...cause it makes sense... Tks WayneD..that's the tangible information and facts desperately needed ..perhaps those intrigued by the language could contact or email the RD for that race..thank him graciously for being sensible and solicit his/her 's rational in allowing headphones..the answer would go far in furthering our discussion here....I think I will do that..anyone one else..??

Stop it.  You are not allowed to bring the fresh air of common sense, reality, personal accountability and responsibility to these pages.

I have a feeling you will see more of this approach.  RDs aren't stupid (I'm sure NHS and Maryt can name plenty though, they have run over 1000 races each) and they know who butters thier bread.

"....Please be careful........"  Imagine that.  Thanks for the post.  Objectivity much is better than name calling, if not as much fun.

Wow, Please Be Careful. What a novel idea.  You know, in reality, this is the type of RD that people come back, over and over for.  He realizes that headphone use is something that his target audience likes, and he caters to them.  I bet he has never been sued either.

Why not travel, pay for the race, and throw our ipods on?!  Doesn't mean we're tuning everything out.  I take in my surroundings, but I'm listening to the music that gets me through the run.

Re: The iPod conflict brews in racing

Before my generic mp3 player and now my ipod, I used to run with a home made cassette tape.  I've ALWAYS needed the music to help me along.  I will always wear my ipod in a race.  If they don't allow it and I want to run it, I will be hiding it til after the start.  I have enough common sense to be able to handle it.  I don't turn it up too long, for safety reasons on the road and to preserve my hearing.

"Traffic-free city streets"

Should a course that is closed be used as a "safety conditions" beacon by which the potential safety of the other 95% (or higher) of road races which are NOT on closed course are judged?

Re: The iPod conflict brews in racing

Wow!  Team EyePod has been active!  Great discussion/arguments/rantings blah, blah, blah.   Been laying low nursing my bruised ego and toes from my failed 23 miler on Saturday....only made it 20....worse run ever!  Even Jimbo belting out "L.A. Woman" or Randy Newman's "I Love L.A. "   didn't help me get through that torturous run! But yesterday's run was good - felt strong and focused.   Although, compared to you dudes - Prof.  RK, sgray and parker - I'm a veritable tortoise!!   But then, I think I'm a bit older than you jackrabbits!

Professor, I highly recommend the MCM.   It's a great race, even though they don't allow headphones.....ran with mine anyway and no MPs ranked me off the course, wasn't DQ'd by Fidel the RD nor was my medal hostage (like some a**hole RD did just 'cuz I questioned the length of his 10k course!).

Oh my!  Just got an email notice that Count Frankensenior has returned.  Everyone grap your garlic and wooden stakes!!!!

Jay, there could be a myriad of reasons for why Baltimore highlites the no headphones thing in their advertisement.  But the bottom line is this, nearly 70% of the runners will be wearing headphones in Baltimore.  There is no explanation for it, it is just always been that way.  Please don't make this a big deal with Corrigan Sports.  They are a great company that does an awesome job of coordinating an event.  Plus, since you are going to be way out front, who cares about us rebel rousers with the headphones on behind you?  So, how is the training coming along for Frederick?  I am getting bummed that I won't be running there this year.  Did you see the jackets the full marathoners are getting?  Pretty Sweet.

At any rate.  My suggestion is this.  Enjoy YOUR run.  If that means wearing headphones, then do it.  If not, that means that you're not cool like us.  Just kidding.  Have fun, that is what this is about.  And, at your next race, if you see someone that is running their first race, pat them on the back and welcome them to our club.

Trust me, I am not going to make any waves for Corrigan.  I am so thankful for the amazing job they do here in Maryland.  My training was going very well up until Monday (I put in a 20+ mile training run at sub 6:40 pace last weekend - I'm rather proud of that run but recognize that it is nowhere near what is considered elite) when my hamstrings decided to lock up and my knee began to throb.  I've decided to give up running outside in these 60 and 70 degree days and train on an elliptical for the rest of the week in order to make sure I don't further aggravate anything.  Luckily this is a rest/recovery week.  Hopefully I'll be back on schedule by next week.  And I always go back out on the course after I finish to cheer for other runners.  Of course I care about you "rebel rousers" and all the other athletes who make the races what they are.  More runners means more great people to meet, higher quality events, and more races on the calendar.  That's why I'd like to see the "no headphones" clause removed from races where it is not needed.  I hope I'll see you at Baltimore!

Oh great, now I feel bad again about my failed 23 miler!   Just kidding, Jay!  In my book, you, parker, sgray and the Professor are elite runners...sans the elitist attitude.  You dudes rock!    Heck, (can't believe this site has forced me to use "heck"),  I'm happy when I run a 9:30!  Can't begin to imagine a 6:40!!

NH It's this kind of your special malarkey we point to over and over and over wtih you... and you apparantly block out all past relevant facts and trudge along ignoring everything but your own small minded opinion...think that has been said enough for you to get it??

Another NH Statistic..95%..is that part of a research project scientists or statististions completed that you could enlighten us as to it's whereabouts? or are you ONCE AGAIN writing what you think or guess or what works for the statistic you need to complete your argument?? the rest of this sentence is simply tourettes syndrome of the a#* covering variety ..beacon..potential..judged..just say it  without the self important disjointed BS!!!..let me help...because this race course says they're safe..does that mean all courses are safe? (Rk, logic, take it, your field)..NO NO NO NO NO...wake up from your waking nap...no ....this RD says bring your ipod..no insurance issues, no safety issue, just bring it...so call him/her up and share your personal problems with them...I'm sure they havent heard your brand of tourettes logic and would be happy to discuss their rationale...
