Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th
Well I`ve been up since 7am helping out our London office with the days disasters ! I was planning a sleep in and maybe even a rest day - but being up so early ... I might aswell go an work out later !!

kev - it`s those distractions that keep me going to the gym every day ! It`s amazing how fast time goes when you have some cute young thing talking to you as you are working out ! In all seriousness I have some great people at my gym and as much as I joke about my #1 eye candy there - He is a a very dedicated trainer who has kept close tabs on my injury and kept me in check - he has never actually trained me so I appreciated his concern - he realized that I was the type to push too hard to come back and stopped me running a couple a times. Sorry to hear your race was cancelled - sounds like you still got a good workout in though

Jeff - nice job on the 10K .. I dream of a 10K under 1 hour ! .. **** I was hoping for one under 1:05 !!

runjr .. I think you need a snow blower ... or a son to do the shoveling !! hmm I guess I have been working out every day for a couple of weeks - I just go by feel - because I switch things up so I don`t tend to get burnt out. My usual week is one day weights with my trainer - 3 days running + a small amount of other cardio to get to 1 hour, 1 day boxing, 1 day non running cardio and 1 day of weight training without my trainer which I usually follow with 30 - 40 mins non running cardio. I try and do some ab work at least 3 times a week and my trainer has just given me an exercise set she calls the fab 5 which is all done on a swiss ball to work on your core - extensions, hyper extensions, knee tucks, push ups with your feet on the ball + skier twists - I want to try and fit that in twice a week if I can - and she has also give me some active stretches for my back and legs that I really like. I guess it`s habit now !!

Joe .. me .. a flirt .. whatever gave you that idea ;0)

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th
good morning all, just a check in b4 church. It is offical, Wisconsin is not a great place to winter train outside. -6 temps and -30 with wind chill.

joe - way to go with the links and all. I hope your weather is good today. The family is thinking about a spring break trip to Texas or somewhere warm. Right about now it is getting frustrating.

jeff - i see you did well in your first race back. That is great and you only have been at it for 6 weeks?

kevee - I have been sticking to running mostly in subdivisions. They are plowed and usually have clear spots on the sides of the roads. They also have sidewalks which usually are cleared. I slip and slide quite a bit but I just push through it. It is not ideal but we have no choice this year. This is my first running winter outside and it can't be any tougher. I will be inside most of this week because when the temps hit 10 or higher we have snow forecasted.

take care.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th
spicegeek - I really think it is time for me to add more cross training and other exercises. I have not been doing them as much. I need to get back to more stretching as well. I used to do it more and the aches and pain were much less. I've been logging between 40-55 miles per week and my middle aged body is saying back off a little. I think I need to listen. I'm going to stay near 40 miles for the week from now on. As much as I love to run, I need to slow down. Thanks from all of us for the insight. As for the snow blower, there haven't been any in the stores for a long time up here. With this record breaking cold and snow year, they are all sold before they get them in.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th
hey yall

its been a while....

i am still not back to normal, but im getting there. spent the last few days in bed with fever, aches, little cough. now, i think fever is over, but cough is really bad. whatever i took last night to sleep is still making me dizzy/groggy. read up on last weeks posts and looks like everyone has had a great week.

joe....hope things are well in tx. DH has a wedding this afternoon, so i guess its spongebob and hannah montana for us! be glad when the boys of summer are back.

spicegeek...up early! wow. hope work gets straightened out. you really workout a lot. amazing.

runjr....hope you are finding things to do in the snow. it is sunny and warm (ish) here. take care of your shins. like you, i am not so good at doing anything but running. i have been trying. my almost middle aged body is telling me to stretch more. i feel a little goofy--better come back later and post again. thanks for all the thoughts sent my way

love to all

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th

Hello everyone! How is everyone doing. It has been a while for me. I ran a horrible three miles yesterday. My hip has been bothering me just a little since the half. Hmmm, not sure what that is. It doesn't hurt too bad though. I need to step up my running again. The weather here is fantastic. Right Texans?? Going to go see the movie There Will Be Blood today. DH wants to see it really bad. Should be fun. We don't go to the movies often. Unless it is a kid movie with DD.

Well, I will try my best to login this week. It is tough.

Love ya guys!!! Have a GREAT Sunday.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th

Hi everyone, sorry I was MIA last week, it was a week from h#ll, I did manage to get 16 miles in total last week. I went to the Y on Wed. and nothing was open but the old treadmills and after 3 miles on that my shins on both legs were tore up. I jumped off when another one opened up and finished my 6 miles but by then the damage was done. Took the next 2 days off, icing and taking it easy. Ran 4 miles yesterday out side and I still have a little twinge in the right one but I think they are ok. I'm on my way out to my exercise room to do a video. I did manage to read all the post from last week and it looks like everyone is doing great

Hi to all the new 1/2 ers on the thread

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th
Checking in. Bronx Half-Marathon (although I'm not in the results). I was viewing it as a test of my condition, since I haven't raced since November. Went well. Notwithstanding early stretches of being depressed about how things were going, I got into a groove. Was in about 38th at 3 miles and just ran my own race from there, finishing about 17th. About 1:18:36, a Masters PR. As is typical in my halfs, no one passed me after mile 3. Second 50-54, about 20 seconds out of first. The third in the A/G was also under 1:20, so this was a tough crowd. The course itself was somewhat rolling, but there was a horrible wind, in the face for about 3 miles, including heading down the Grand Concourse. Worse was the final 1/2 mile, right into the wind. Longest final stretch I've ever experienced.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th

Good morning all!

Chamblin - way to push through your last run...sorry to hear about your parents

runjr - 6.2 & 10 GREAT! Yes I just started back running 6 weeks ago. Little background. I Have a lawn & landscape biz. From March - Dec. I work a ton of hours outdoors. Real physical work. I ran my first 5k Feb 06 after training for a couple months. I am a seasonal running I guess. I keep telling myself if I can get just a couple runs in per week during my season things would be great. Starting over each year is tough.

Chuck - way to work it out on your 8 miler.

Ispence - good idea sneaking in a couple miles during your dance class. I am going to try that Thursday while my twins are at gymnastics.

Kevee - sorry your race was cancelled. It has been cold here, minus the heavy snow.

Joe - Pro bowl.... is it a real game? 1/2 in March will be my first ever. My goal is under 2 hours.

Miss Wendy - hope you are back on the road soon!

Sheila - hope this week is better for you

toshi - 1/2 route on old RR bed in made of fine crushed limestone. It is an awsome trail. 35 miles in total. The county has a master plan of a Green way trail to circle the entire city. I believe a total of 150+ miles.

I have the cool black and blue toe thing going! 20- windchill this am. I got 5 in at a real easy pace. A stray dog followed me for 4 of the 5 miles. I'm sure the drivers along my route were cussing me because the dog was in and out of traffic on several occasions.

A good running week to all!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th
Well - things calmed down at the office - I went to gym .. why not I was up what else was I going to do ? .. eat ?? ! ... Did a solid hour cardio, and all the active stretches and core work my trainer gave me plus some good old crunches.

runjr - I`m still at 10 miles per week - I`m hitting the other cardio hard to get my fitness back up - also 18 months ago I was just mess fitness wise so al the weight training and x training is part of a total body make over - 40 miles a week is pretty impressive. I`m still quite new to running - just over a year - each time I try and add a 4th day of running I seem to get an injury. I`m thinking of adding it next week while my pace is still slow and my long run is still fairly short and see how it feels - if it starts to bother me I`m going to stick to 3 days a week until I drop another 20lbs .. but I know what you mean about aches and pains !

misswendy !! you poor thing .. stay warm - drinks lots of hot tea with sugar

Peg - take it easy - it`s ok to take a week or so off after your race and let yourself recover

Sheila - 16 miles - good week !! it`s amazing how bad a old treadmill can be !!

JP good to see you - I was going to go and watch your race ! .. just got sidelined with work - A friend ran - her results look good especially given what you said about the weather.

Off to make some lamb in onion gravy and pasta for dinner !

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th
Hi all,
I have been lurking but am finally taking time to chime in. It is amazing how this thread grows and grows! All due to Joe's great moderation skills, no doubt!
Cara, so sorry to hear about your parent's split. I know it must be a shock - hang in there! Spicegeek - enjoyed reading the history of your screen name. I still laugh when I see recent pics of Posh Spice - what was she thinking? All that money spent to make you look 10x worse (IMHO). Your dinner sounds like a good cold weather meal.
Kevin and Run Jr. - have you had enough winter already? I am so sick of the treadmill. I did get yak trax so have had a few runs outside but don't like to run in <20 degrees (which it doesn't look like we will get too anytime soon). Kevin, sorry your race was cancelled. I am planning on doing the Shamrock Shuffle (5K) in Madison on March 16. Will do it at an easy pace with dh who is repeating C25K.
Peg, sorry about the hip problems. I had a heck of a time getting into a running schedule after my half in Sept. I am finally getting back to 15 mile weeks! I only run 3 days a week so seldom run more than 20.
Chuck, did I hear something about a grand child? Congrats!
JP - wow what a fantastic time! I can't imagine running that fast even in a 5K - let alone a half in winter conditions. You rock!
Joe, I will probably watch part of the pro bowl when I am at the gym today.
Andahuff, I don't think 5 miles in 48 min is slow - it is all perspective, isn't it? I find I am faster outside (in good weather, LOL!) than on the treadmill - must be boredom or something, but I have trouble keeping a 12 min. mile pace on the treadmill but have no trouble keeping that pace for 5 or more miles outside.
I have started doing the Bob Greene total body makeover challenge - I am doing core and stretching exercises 6x a week, cardio 6x a week and strength training 3x a week. It feels like it is working - I felt pretty good on my LSD last week.
Shout outs to everyone else! Will try to get better at posting and at remembering personals! Bertha has a thread started on running ahead.com (under half marathon trainers group) so stop over when you can. They have an awesome running log (much better than the one here) and they will let you get into your old CR files to transfer everything over. I almost cried when I saw my old cool running log!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th
Sheila, ouch on the old treadmill! We have a brand new gym that opened 1/2 mile from our house. The new treadmills are awesome. The only problem is it is already overcrowded. I am glad it is a success and it is so cool seeing so many overweight and elderly folk going at it but we need more space and equipment already. Luckily I've heard that the owner is expanding to an empty space next door and adding treadmills. Now if he would add yoga and aerobics classes, I would be in heaven!
Jeff, I hear you on the starting over. I have done it twice, thus the forcing myself to run on a treadmill this winter, rather than start again in the spring. it is tough when you are working super long days 9 months of the year! Maybe you just need to schedule running time as if it is a work appointment.
Mary

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Feb 10th
jpgarland...typical in any race for me: 'i passed no one after 300 yards' lol. GREAT race! i ran a 5k once that ended up a hill. it was about 85 degrees. only the shame of people seeing me kept me from walking (or crawling) in the last 1/4 mile.

jeffrw...drivers are annoyed by runners because they are ususally running late and we are just running...

spicegeek...whats tea without sugar?

tommashe...hope you have a great week. take care of your shins....beware bad treadmills!!!!

peg...how was the movie? hope your hip gets better soon.

marflair...good to see you again. sounds like you are doing well running 3 days a week.
