Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Don, that is a spectacular run! I'm so impressed. From over here I think your run shows the exact opposite - that you DO have what it takes to do a marathon. I'm pretty sure I would have bailed when my water bottle froze! :) Thank you for the gory details ;)

I have one more long run of 10 or 11 miles before my 1/2 marathon in two weeks. Either tomorrow or the next day. I'm starting to get excited and really nervous.

Frank, you're doing great. I can't believe you signed up for a 5K already! I'm glad you're feeling so well.

Thanks for all the congrats everyone :) How was your race Kevin?

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Holy Moly Don! That's some serious determination. I know I would have quit. You're quite inspiring.:D

Frank, sounds like things are moving along. You'll be back to pounding the pavement in no time.

Juststarted, great job on the running. Although, I think I have to ask the same question as you? Are you out of your mind?:0 10K? You've got some balls g/f. I know you'll be able to do it but da*n, girl, that's going to be a lot of work! I'm really going to have to do a lot of nagging to get you out and running. Let the nagging begin.

Nico, how cool. How cool!! You should be able to find your race results on-line. Under 30 minutes! Too cool!!

Kev, race report?

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Hey guys,

Man, it sounds like the LHers had a VERY eventful weekend!

Don, U DA MAN!!! That was a crazy story. You deserve major kudos for fighting your way through that. WOW!

Nico, great job! Sub 30 was also my goal. Story below.

Kimber, I KNEW IT!!! The snowbirds make for a very eventful driving experience during the winter months.

OK, as I said earlier, my bib # was 6600 which led me to believe that this race was going to be a ZOO!! YEPPER!!

There were so many people!! 7606 running a 5k. UGH!!

I spoke to a guy after the race who started so far from the start line that he could subtract 6 MINUTES for his chip time! 6 minutes...for a 5k??

It was a perfect morning. Hi 60s, just a little wind.

The race started at 9:30, we got there about 9 to start stretching.

I got to the start line 1 minute 24 seconds after the clock started. It was like running through a minefield for the 1st half mile. Very tough to get a pace started. i would jump up on the sidewalk, back to the road, over to the right, over to the left, onto the grass, blah, blah, blah.

Anyway, I settled in and did a 9:35ish 1st mile. Perfect pace.

The turn was at about 1.7miles and was a cluster! I almost ran up a woman's back and some guy almost ran up mine. The volunteers didn't guide us enough as to where to run. I came to an almost complete stop.

I got started going again just as the 1st water station appeared. I grabbed a cup, splilled 90% of it on me and continued on my way. I got to the 2 mile mark in the 19:20 range. Slower but I figured the chaos at the turn had something to do with that. I said to myself 'You run a 10 minute mile and you break 30 minutes.'

I don't know what happened but I really struggled the last 1.1 miles. I looked down at my watch and saw 27:33 but I was still 3/10ths or so from the end. I knew I had to push it to get there under 30.

I started my 'sprint' at about 2.9 miles and crossed the finish in............30.04!!!

I was a little disappointed but I still enjoyed the experience.

I start Hal Higdon's Spring Training/Novice Supreme today which means I take today off. No complaints about that.

Have a great Monday!

Kevin

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!
Hi everyone, I am back from my weekend in the desert. During the weekend I did have a chance to get in a 4.5 mile run in the California Mojave desert. I am not sure if my fellow east coast runners people have had the chance but there is a lot of beauty in the desert and during this time of the year the temperature was wonderful. The humidity was still single digit so chapstick was necessary. The hardest part of my run was the fact I was not running at 300ft elevation like I am used to in the city. I was running at 3900ft and found I did need to increase my breathing.

Nico - Congrats on your run, That is a great 5K time and you should be proud of yourself. I have not been able to break a 30min 5K yet.

Valerie - When is your 10K? don't tell me it is scheduled for next weekend or something. You can do it, I have no doubt and with enough nagging from everyone here you WILL do well.

Frank - I am so glad to here your recovery is going well. Wow, you got a Garmin 305...That would get me out running as well. This is on my want list but will have to wait a while.

Don - Your 10 mile run us really an inspiration. I am honestly not sure if I could have pushed on, especially when my water froze.

Kevin - Great race report and a race well done. I am sure you were heart broken about missing your goal by 4 seconds but your time is great.

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Hello everyone!

You guys all rock! Just want you to know that :)

Kimber - I did 11 miles today in 2:14. I am a F&F (Fluids and Fuel) convert. I ate a banana and half a Clif bar before I left and took a 32 oz. bottle with me of my own concotion - honey, water, V8 Infusion and a packet of Emergen-C. Worked a treat. I had energy! Wow, what a concept :).

Michael - I've lived in the high desert some of my life and it's true, it has it's own special kind of beauty. And I LOVE the way it smells. Altitude throws a loop in the stride though, for sure!

juststarted - when is your 10K? You'll do GREAT.

Don - just want to say again, your run story is inspiring. I was thinking about you today during my run and trying to imagine being freezing cold, the wind and snow in my face, my fingers and water bottle turning to ice...

Kevin - Holy Macaroni! 7700 people running a 5k? That's crazy. When I ran across the Gasparilla weekend ad in my surfing it hit me what a big deal it was, but I didn't think it would be THAT big a deal. It sounds like you had an awful lot of variables to contend with to make it really hard to get a PR. The organizers of the 1/2 marathon I've signed up for have gone so far as to write us all emails saying, "Don't except PR conditions!" I had the perfect race on the perfect day. You would have done as well with the same conditions.

Have you heard of the Gate River Run 15k in Jacksonville? I just found out about it. They are expecting 22,000 people!!! Sounds like fun though :).

Happy running everyone!

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Michael, that sounds like an awesome running experience. Did you take an pix?

Nico, Gasparilla is the biggest thing in Tampa. They go crazy for this festival. They ran the half & full marathons yesterday. i wanted to get down and watch a little but couldn't get there.

Gate River Run 15k in Jacksonville: After dealing with 7,700 folks, 22,000 sounds unbearable. http://community.active.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif

Can someone tell me what the Garmin device does?

I am going to get into the Higdon program for awhile before I run another race. Maybe in April? We will see.

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Thanks for the nice race report Kevin, I would be lost running in a group that large, you would have met your goal of 30mis. without all the weaving in and out. The Garmin Device we are talking about is a Garmin Forerunner 305, it's a watch with a gps and heart monitor. The watch will give you a ton of info while running and then when you get home you can download it to you computer or a program on the internet that will do tons of stats, charts, and maps. I have just got my watch, so I'm still learning what it will do.

I walked 3 miles yesterday and felt better at the end than my 2.6 miles Saturday. I'm wanting to run but I know it may still be too soon.

Sounds like everyone had a great weekend, the weather was beautiful here, about 70 outside now and I'm going out for a walk.

Happy Running (and walking lol)

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!
Kevin,

During the course of the weekend I took a lot of pictures which are still in my camera. These would be off the desert area, not of me huffing and puffing. Tonight hopefully I will find time to get them off my camera and I will post some.

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!
Hey, is anyone out there???

I did an easy 2 miles today and it went very well. Nothing much to report except the weather was perfect and I could have run longer, being the robot I am I am forced to stick to my training schedule and stopped when my miles were up.

Valerie - You have any more miles to report? If you are running a 10K in April I expect you will be on the road a lot more now.

Well, I was not going to bore all of you with pictures but Kevin brought it up. I am attaching some pictures from the Mojave this weekend. I stuck to scenery shots since I am just to dang ugly for the Internet and well, buildings are buildings.

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Thanks for the pics Mike, I really enjoyed viewing them. I didn't see any of you running!!!

I hope everyone's week is going good, it's been two weeks since my surgery, I will visit the Dr. tomorrow. Maybe he will turn me loose to run, the walking has not bothered me at all. I did another 3 mile walk yesterday and about to leave to get a walk in before it starts raining.

Happy running,

Frank N Mississippi

Thanks for the pictures, Michael! Those made me very nostalgic...

Frank, good luck with the doc. Was your surgery laproscopic? Some gentle jogging should be fine by now :)

Did a really slow, easy, easy 'Hood 5k today. I'm heading into my taper week...

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!
Hey, do we have any RN, LVN, or any other medical type people here on the Long Haul? I am wondering how much Ibuprofen should I be taking for inflammation? I am currently taking 400mg, three times a day to hopefully help with a case of plantar fasciitis that keeps on nagging me. I am also icing it twice a day and doing some calve stretches which seems to help and I have given up walking around the house bare foot. I was told before that I really didn't need orthotics but I do wear a gel insole which seems to help as well.
