Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training
Hey, what happened to the group? I hope we are all out running today and have something great to report.

Myself I did my 5 miler for WK8 today. Since I never ran this distance I took it slow and didn't even think about my time. I ended up with a time of 1:06, not very fast at all but the run was great. I am really beginning to enjoy the long runs on this program and look forward to them every other week. It still amazes me that in November I was only running to the fridge but 4 months later I am now at 5 miles non-stop. The human body adapts amazingly to what we challenge it with.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Mike - Congratulations on finishing the 5 miles! You must feel great about running your longest distance yet - way to go!

NYC - thanks for the info on the HR monitor - I'll have to check that out. Hope your knee is feeling better.

Slmoes and Irish Patty - Triathlons? Wow! That sounds like a great workout and a lot of fun. Good luck!

Tomorrow I will finish week 6 with a 4.5 mile run. I've mapped it out and plan to download some new songs to get me through but I think I'll do o.k. I ran a PB on Thursday, it was 2 miles in 22:03! I am amazed at this. In the beginning of January I was averaging a 13:30 - 14mm. I am so happy I have stuck with this and thank you all for your support - you all helped even when you didn't know I was here and I'd peek at the posts to keep myself motivated. Great group!

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training
I ran today - the LA Kings 5K in downtown Los Angeles. I think my time was really awful since I've done much better 5Ks (4-5 minutes better) and this one was difficult (38:45) for me, it felt tougher than I think it should have. Not trying to make excuses, but I'm trying to reason it out so I don't get too down on myself that: I'm still getting over a kidney infection, I didn't run at all on Wednesday and Thursday's 2 miles was tough, I didn't sleep well and my asthma was been bad all week. I'm just trying not to freak myself out over this 10K I've planned for April.

I didn't stop and walk - I'm always amazed by how many people walk for long periods, then sprint for a while. I find it harder to start again if I stop so I just plod along.

I think in lieu of tomorrow's 5 miles, I will do the 5 miles next Sunday instead of the the 3 miles.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hey guys!

Well, my knee was feeling much better on Friday morning and I woke up to beautifully falling snow, which I don't get to run in very often. So I did 3 miles on Friday and 2 miles today. Now I am all caught up with the program. I will do tomorrow's 3 mile run as scheduled and then I'll be ready to move on to week 6! Can't believe I'm almost halfway through.

Glad to see everyone's sticking with it!

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Michael - great job on the 5 miles!!! It is amazing what are bodies will adapt too.

Woodwoman - I wouldn't worry about your 10K. We all have bad running days - and it sounds like you had lots of reasons for this one. I am sure that by next weekend you'll be feeling much more up to snuff.

I did my 3.5 mile run today and will do my 50 minutes walking tomorrow to finish out week 7. So I have Michael's 5 mile run to look forward to next Saturday. I have an hour long swim clinic at 7 am in the morning and then off to sing at church - I'll either be real awake or dead to the world.

Fromheretothere - great job on finishing week 6!!! Have fun with 7 the 3.5 for the long run will seem short after week 6.

NewYorkChick - glad your knee is better. I am not a cold weather runner - so although we have had tons of snow this year I have yet to run in it. It's been me and my dreadmill except for one day when we hit 50!! I am so ready for spring. Even took my convertible out today (left the top up) to try and convince old man winter that he isn't welcome anymore.

Keep up the good work everyone and have a great weekend.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hey Everyone,

I did the 4.5 miles today to finish out week 6. I've never ran this far before so I ran ridiculously slow to make sure I could finish without stopping. About half way through I got a stitch in my side and wondered if I was going to have to stop. I slowed up and focused on my breathing and it eventually went away. My shins started to bother me and I thought I was going to end up with shin splints but that also went away. I ended up running it in 58:44. I'm o.k. with that for now. I'm just glad I was able to do it without walking and I still had energy at the end.

Have a great week!

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Claire & NYChick great job on finishing week 6. Halfway there does feel good.

Woodwoman you had a lot of reasons to have an off running day and yet you still got a good run in. You'll see over the next week as you continue to recover that your runs will improve again.

Michael great job on 5 miles. It feels wonderful to go a bit farther than you've ever done before. Wahoo!!

Well I did 20 minutes on the stationary bike Saturday morning. I followed that with an upper body weight workout and a 10 minute walk cooldown. Sunday I was aiming for 5 miles since last weekend I only did about 3 when I was in the mountains. I, unfornutately, had too many reasons why that didn't happen. I was out late Saturday night and drank 2 glasses of wine. I did drink alot of water too. Prior to my run I drank more water. Well the run was sluggish the whole time and all I could think about was visiting the ladies room. I only did 3 miles. Next week I'll aim for 5 miles.

Have a good rest day today everyone.

Patty

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Ok - I'm about to call uncle on this weather. We got another 5-6 inches of snow last night and it is still snowing this morning. Enough. Some year I'll actually be able to get outside and run again without danger of killing myself on snow covered ice. Rant over.

2.5 planned on treadmill tonight to start week 8. Then an hour spinning class for triathlon training later. Sunday's swim class was good. Here I taught swimming lessons for 3 years, lifeguarded all through high school and when I was a stay at home mom when the kids were little - but apparently I don't know how to swim. Or I should say I don't know how to swim long distances and come out able to bike and run. Whole different way to do things. It was fun though.

Keep up the great work everyone and have a great day!!!

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Slmoes I do feel for you. Snow is beautiful the first day and after that it's just inconvenient. When I trained the past 2 years for the gym's triathlon I never did all three at the same workout. What I would do is either practice 2 in the same session or 1 in the morning and 1 in the night. You'll get accostumed to the increased workout load. Good luck!

Today was 2.5 miles. The first 2 miles were in 23:37. The first was 11:51 and the second 11:47. The last .5 mile was 6:34. I followed the run and stretch with upper body weight workouts. Tonight I'm planning to swim.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training
Woodwoman - There are so many different variables when running a road race and I think you time is great. I am not aware of that 5K, did it happen downtown? If so I wonder if smog was a factor?

I am fortunate enough to live in a part of the country where it never snows. It has not always been the case and for many years I did have to live with snow. To me snow is great as long as I am inside and do not have to leave the comfort of my apartment. When I hear of fellow runners pushing themselves to run in that climate it really impresses me. Because of this I no longer complain to run in my area's cold, I have not right to.

I went out on 3 miles today and when I got home and logged my run it dawned on me I am now on WK9. I have been on HHST as long as I was on C25K. wow, the time certainly flies. Hope everybody has some great runs and successes.

Juststarted, are you out there? We might have an MIA and need to send out reinforcements. She is probably held captive and being force fed Cheesy Poofs.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hello all,

Today was my 3 miles and they were done at exactly the speed I thought they would be. I followed the run with some lunges and side shuffles. Tonight I meet with a personal trainer for some new exercises. I still haven't gotten into the pool yet. Maybe I will tonight.

Michael nice job on your 3 miles. You're doing very well.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training
Patty,

I am not much of a swimmer myself. I love running and biking but the swimming thing keeps me out of ever doing a triathlon. It is great that you have a personal trainer. This can be a great source of motivation, mainly because you are accountable to someone.

Today I went out for another 3 miles and accidentally did 4 miles. That would of never happened before I left the couch.

Run well everyone .....

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hey all,

Today I did the long run for week 6 - 4.5 miles! I am doing a 5K on Sunday, so I switched today's 3 mile run with that day's long run.

Like you Claire, I ran ridiculously slowly to make sure I could finish with no walking. I managed to stay in target heart rate range the whole time, although it's still very hard for me not to go above it, especially on such a long run.

In other news, I've been tracking my mileage on every run since I started with C25K back in November, and today, I passed 100 miles of running. http://community.active.com/images/emoticons/blush.gif That is a nice thought.

Happy Wednesday all...

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Michael - you accidentially did 4 miles? That still hasn't happened to me.

NewYorkChick - good luck on the 5K this weekend.

Ran my 2.5 miles yesterday, shoveled the driveway and then did an hour spinning class. My legs are talking to me today. Could make for a fun 3 mile run tonight.

Irish Patty - Personal trainer have fun. The classes I'm taking for my triathlon stress the "Total Immersion" method of swimming. Their big thing is making your efficient at swimming so you come out with energy for the rest of the tri. Makes a lot of sense to me - but it's taking some retraining on part.

Have a great day everybody.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training
Slmoes - I went on a route I have never done before. I had a feeling I might have went past my 3 mile goal but I had no idea I went 4 miles. Only when I looked at my watch and it dawned on my that I should be in the shower already getting ready for work did I know I went further.
