running and sleep

I want to run my 2nd half marathon in May in my city. However, my cousins wedding reception is the night before and I am a bridesmaid, so I can only sneak out so early...

I am wondering if extra training can help make up for lack of sleep before a long race? Any of you run a half or longer on a lack of sleep?

(oh, and I'm sure if I do decide to run it, I'll skip out on the alcohol)

Re: running and sleep
for most the more important night of sleep is two nights prior since lots of ppl don't sleep well the night before an event.
If you can skip the alcohol you should be fine.

That said there are a million 1/2 marathons. Go have fun at the wedding.

If you can manage to sleep the night before a marathon, you're a better person than me.

I'd skip it. Weddings are so stressful I think you'll be ready to relax at the reception. Adding a HM to an already stressful and busy weekend seems like a recipe for a disappointing experience.

Run the HM while wearing your bridesmaid dress. You'll never wear it again anyway. If you have a bad race, well at least you made people laugh. If you have a good race, you'll have ****** off every male runner you manage to beat (and a fair percentage of the women too).

I think a lot of time on your feet the night before a longer race the the HM is gonna hurt your time more than coming up a few hours short in the sleep category.

This IS the best advice. Party ON.

BTW - Running is the best hangover cure ever.

There will only be one cousin's wedding (hopefully). There will be many races. I'd bag the race and have a good time at the wedding.

I agree with mrinertia in that being on your feet most of the evening will impact your time more than losing a couple of hours of sleep.

Re: running and sleep
I've done both - on my feet all day before a HM (all day at Disneyland - oh, my barkin' dogs!) and also little sleep. I've also done everything right. You know what? None of it impacted me as far as I could tell. On the other hand, I'm not an elite so seconds don't count.

If it was me, I'd take it easy at the wedding (more important than the HM anyway), but enjoy myself and not worry about it. Have fun on your half.

Re: running and sleep

You might want to come to Des Moines - Drake Relays On the Roads Half is 2 weeks before Lincoln, but even a better choice would be the Dam to Dam 20K which is the last Saturday in May.
