I finished W21D4 of HHNS today with a 10 mile run (2:03:44). We had a few feet of snow out here yesterday, and the roads were semi-plowed by this morning. I pulled out the ice cleats and got on my way. I decided to try a different route today, just to change things up. It turned out to be a pretty tough run.
I tried to keep things slow today (~12 min/mile pace) because my knee is still acting up on me. I managed to stay slow, but between the snow on the ground and the bitter wind, it was tough to keep moving. I nearly called it quits after four miles (mainly because my bladder was full), but I kept at it after a quick pit-stop at home. The next two miles flew by, and then I was done before I knew it. Those last few miles really went fast!
Today's run featured pina colada Shot Bloks. They were pretty tasty; mostly a pineapple flavor, but quite agreeable. I was pleasantly surprised. I also ran with a full water bottle, but it froze on me again.
Kimber - sounds like you had a rough run, too! Glad you didn't blow off the bridge into the drink. Sounds like your training regimen is pretty tough. Are you sure you're not pushing yourself too hard? Just so long as it's still fun for you.... I didn't run on the streets when I was in NYC last September, either. I did my run on the dreadmill at the hotel. I just wasn't sure I was up to a run in so busy a place.
Be patient, Kevin. Your sub-30 5k will happen. Just keep increasing your distance and don't worry so much about speed. You'll break the 30 minute barrier without even trying. I've read somewhere that speedwork should wait until you're running 20-mile weeks consistently. That makes sense to me, given the injuries I've experienced/I'm experiencing from going too fast too soon. Apparently it takes quite a while for the joints, tendons, and ligaments to make the adjustment to running.
Congrats, Frank on the 5k. Sounds like it was a great race. Also very cool that you worked the MS 50. That's a great way to get to know a race; excellent idea!
I hope you all had a great weekend!
Run well.
