Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!
Hello all, it has been a little while since I have posted but I figured if time is limited it is better to run then post, sorry guys:)

Val, nice to see you online. I hope your running is going well. Janet, I remember your handle from when this group had the boomerang effect and bounced to runningahead and back. Even if you can't run post often. We hope to hear about you being back in running shoes.

Nico - Did you purchase the Asics shoes? For what it is worth I run in Asics Gel-1120's and I love them. At least my shoes I found a little heavier then some but to my feet they offer great support and comfort. My shoes now have 140 miles on them and I will be sad when they get worn and need replacement since these are an older model shoe and I will probably not find another pair.

Don - You paint a picture for me of you going out and running looking something like robocop on fire. It is better to play it safe since I am sure there is a secret society of drivers whose whole intention is to exterminate all runners on the road.

Myself I am doing well. This weekend I have scheduled a 5.5 mile run and I feel well prepared for a scheduled 10K in April. I have decided after I am done with HHST and run my 10K I will hang low and put on some base miles for a while and hold off on another training plan. I will probably jump on a 1/2 marathon training plan to prepare for a fall 1/2 marathon.

This last weekend was the LA Marathon here in the "City of Angels". I recorded it and watched it during the week. Honestly, I have never watched a marathon before. It was very motivating for me, in 09 I I really want to run LA and feel I can be well prepared for it.

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!
I just returned from an easy four miles. I worked very hard to throttle back my pace because my left knee is acting up a bit. I've been averaging below 11 minutes/mile for the last several runs, including my long runs. I think that's taking its toll on my knee, so it's complaining. Today I kept things between 11:30 and 12:00 min/mile, and it felt much better. The knee's still stiff, but at least there's not new pain. :)

I'm glad tomorrow's a rest day. Sunday I have a ten-mile run, and I plan on keeping the pace slow on that run as well. Last time I had significant knee issues, I was able to keep running as long as I kept it slow. I might even go by heart rate again, which means something closer to 13 min/miles. (On today's run, I averaged 138bpm with a peak of 152. If I keep it under 140 or so, that's generally slow enough to keep the knee from acting up.)

Good to hear you're keeping up with your running, Mike. Your life has been very hectic lately, so it would be very easy to let the running slide. Good for you!

Keeping the Northern Hemisphere brightly lit (at least before 6am),

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!
Hello everyone!

Nice to see people! That is a LOT of SNOW Mom (Hi!). The last year I lived in North Dakota we had a winter like that. I have never lived where it snows since then (that was the winter of 96-97).

Don, my 1/2 started at 7 a.m. too and I was done at 9:38. It was kind of a fluke that it got warm so early in the day. Everyone was telling me how cold and windy last years was. You are getting so much more experience and practice with long runs that I did, that will help you a lot.

Mike, I have been running in Asics Cumulus 9's and I ended up getting another pair of those. I'm a neutral to under-pronator and they really work for me. I was tempted by the Kayano 14's because they got such a rave review in Runner's World, but they didn't feel good to my feet. You might be able to find some of the Gel's you like online.

I was going to do a 10-miler today, but we are under a severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado watch...

Wasn't Frank going to do a 5K race this past weekend? Or maybe even the week before. I hope he's okay. And Kimber too. I worry sometimes.

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Don't send out the search party, I'm still alive and running. lol

I just haven't been on the computer as much now since the weather is better, I enjoy reading to posts. I will do better with my posting.

My strength is still not back since my surgery, I'm trying to go by the 10% rule in training. I'm running every other day now until I get my base built back up. My only race since my surgery was on the 23rd, I ran a PR for me in 30:10, my next race will be tomorrow. The starting temp should be around 30 degrees, I'm not used to running at that temp. Being retired I wait until it warms up during the day. who said being retired was all bad??? lol

I have been enjoying my training runs, my long run is up to 4.5 miles and I plan on running 5 miles next week. During the middle of the week I run my neighborhood, which is all hills, I'm running 3 miles. This is harder than any 5K I have ever run in. Yesterday I ran 3 miles at the track, I started with a good pace and increased it during the middle of the run and then slowed down a little and then picked it back up on the last lap. Today is a rest day for me. I have also been going to the gym and working on my core and cardio everyday, I work on my arms one day and my legs the next.

Last Saturday I helped with the Mississippi 50 Mile Trail Run: http://www.ms50.com/

Click on the 2008 Race to view this years race.

I learned alot and really enjoyed to weekend. I worked at Aid Station 2, you can click on the Aid Station Pictures to see the pics that I took. There are none of me there!!! the one behind the camera is usually not in the pics. Maybe next year I can run the 20K or maybe the 50K. The pics I took were only of the 50 mile runners, we were to busy while the others were running to take any pics.

Keep up the running and the nice reports,

Frank N Mississippi

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Mike, RoadRunnerSports.com has Asics GEL-1120's.

We had some severe storms here with a tornado warning. It's been raining all day. I did go out and run 3.7 in the rain between the dire warnings of hail and high winds. This may seem like a silly question, but is it okay for shoes to get wet? I hope so, because my brand new shoes got soaked. My headphones shorted out too. Such is the life of an addicted runner :)

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!
Glad to see you're still going strong, Frank. It's always great to hear what you're up to.

Nico - no worries about the wet shoes. Happens to me all the time. I'd recommend removing the insoles (if they're removable, of course) to let them air-dry, then stuff the interior of the shoes with newspaper. The newspaper seems to absorb the moisture nicely, helping the shoes to dry out more quickly. I don't think the newspaper will help your headphones, though.

Hi Frank! Nice to hear from you. Thanks for checking in. Sounds like you're doing really well and training smart and having lots of fun! The website and pictures on it were quite inspiring. Looked like a nice place to run. Was it all on trails? I would like to do a trail event.

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

I have no idea where the time went. I have been gone awhile. All I do is work, train and sleep. My running does not compare to everyone else. But I did ride the bike 25 miles last Saturday and then ran 2 miles afterward. Does that count? I've had the same rainy, windy weather as nico and kev. I too, have a soaking wet pair of shoes. I also take the liners out and stuff them with newspaper.

Today is the first day I've slept in since last summer.http://community.active.com/images/emoticons/shocked.gif It is too windy to ride the bike outside so I will be staying inside and riding it on the trainer. Yeah! I typically have to get up early on the week-ends. It's too hot to ride in the afternoon and too hot to run in the afternoon. So I have to get that early start. Tonight is daylight-savings time. I'm not sure how that's going to affect me.

Everyone is doing great. Congrats on your HM nico! I'm impressed:) Frank, there are no words for you. You're a rockstar! Kevin,

try this link for some local races.

My life is just a blur right now. I'll try and be better about checking in. The days seems to roll into each other. My training continues to suck. I can't swim worth a darn and I'm usually so tired when I run that I just plod along. But the bike isn't too bad. Anyway, missed you all. Have a safe week-end.

And yes, juststarted sent the mounties after me.:D

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Hope everyone's weekend is going good.

The MS 50 Trail Run is all on the trails, with the roots, stumps, mud and water crossings. They told me a few years ago at one of the water crossings they had to put a rope across and you had to pull yourself through chin deep water. Sounds like fun doesn't it !!!!!!

Today was my first 5K under thirty mins. I felt good at the finish. Two weeks ago I ran 30:10 and had leg cramps after I finished.

This is a link to my race is on motion based site: http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/5116936

The info came from my Forerunner 305 and uploaded to the site.

The race was on the Long Leaf Trace, which is a rails to trails program. the start of the trail is next to the University of Southern Miss campus, on the map click on the Satillite button and you can see the campus and the ball field. USM is where Brete Farve went to college at and lives in Hattiesburg.

Happy Running,

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Frank, great job on the sub 30 min!! You are back in a big way!!

As my fellow Floridians Nico & Kimber know, it is a very windy day.

Kimber, there is a new 5K in Abacoa Jupiter 4/5. Rooney's, the neighborhood pub is sponsoring it. $20 to register. Breakfast & I am sure Guinness will be available. :^0 I registered the other day. Just an FYI.

I did HHST W5D4 today, a neighborhood 5k. There were times when I swear if I stopped moving forward the wind would push me backward! Nuts!

I still felt real good and thought this was going to be the run when I finally break 30 min.

Nope. Again. 30:45. Close but no stogie.

I get to walk tomorrow and REST on Monday, then W6.

Have a great weekend all.

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Kevin, I was running over a small bridge this afternoon. A gust of wind about blew me right over the handrail. I had to grab onto the handrail to keep myself from flying into the water.:0

Then I had gravel blowing into my face. It was not a fun run.

I'd like to do that race but I'll be out of town that week and I doubt I'll be able to run. I'd hate to try and run a 5K after not running for 6 days. I'm going to NYC. I have never, ever been to NY. I'll be staying in Manhattan, near the Financial District. I have no idea where that is, but that's where I'll be. I'm going to take my Garmin and my running stuff but I don't know where I'll be able to run. My niece is spending this semester at NYU and I'll be staying with her. I asked her about running in her neighbourhood and she said there were too many people on the sidewalks to be able to run. And I'm not too keen on venturing into Central Park by myself. I've been trying to find a gym within walking distance of her apartment. I might have to resort to a dreadmill.

I will keep it in mind. I may go, just to meet a fellow Long Hauler.B-)

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!
I finished W21D4 of HHNS today with a 10 mile run (2:03:44). We had a few feet of snow out here yesterday, and the roads were semi-plowed by this morning. I pulled out the ice cleats and got on my way. I decided to try a different route today, just to change things up. It turned out to be a pretty tough run.

I tried to keep things slow today (~12 min/mile pace) because my knee is still acting up on me. I managed to stay slow, but between the snow on the ground and the bitter wind, it was tough to keep moving. I nearly called it quits after four miles (mainly because my bladder was full), but I kept at it after a quick pit-stop at home. The next two miles flew by, and then I was done before I knew it. Those last few miles really went fast!

Today's run featured pina colada Shot Bloks. They were pretty tasty; mostly a pineapple flavor, but quite agreeable. I was pleasantly surprised. I also ran with a full water bottle, but it froze on me again.

Kimber - sounds like you had a rough run, too! Glad you didn't blow off the bridge into the drink. Sounds like your training regimen is pretty tough. Are you sure you're not pushing yourself too hard? Just so long as it's still fun for you.... I didn't run on the streets when I was in NYC last September, either. I did my run on the dreadmill at the hotel. I just wasn't sure I was up to a run in so busy a place.

Be patient, Kevin. Your sub-30 5k will happen. Just keep increasing your distance and don't worry so much about speed. You'll break the 30 minute barrier without even trying. I've read somewhere that speedwork should wait until you're running 20-mile weeks consistently. That makes sense to me, given the injuries I've experienced/I'm experiencing from going too fast too soon. Apparently it takes quite a while for the joints, tendons, and ligaments to make the adjustment to running.

Congrats, Frank on the 5k. Sounds like it was a great race. Also very cool that you worked the MS 50. That's a great way to get to know a race; excellent idea!

I hope you all had a great weekend!

Run well.

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

hey all, apologies for not being around much.

My foot/leg is still giving me trouble and I've really let my running slide this winter so today I went back to wk 4 of c25k and ran the intervals. leg/foot still gave me some problems, I'm hoping it's a treadmill issue and not a real problem. The stretching I'm doing helps, it didn't bother me half as much as last time. So yeah I think I'm going to just follow the program back up to 5k, I have my first race on April 29th so it's good motivation. Praying for some decent weather to come my way....winter has to end sometime right?

Good to see everyone doing so well, keep it up!

Re: The Long Haul - Still Running!!

Kimber, I was born in NYC & raised in the northern 'burbs. Here is my suggestion for you if you are staying down in the Wall St. area.

Just south of you is Battery Park. Great views of the Statue of Liberty, The Hudson River, etc. If you walk towards the Hudson there is a walking/running sidewalk that you could do your runs on. It is very scenic and you will be amongst a bunch of other walkers/runners. Very safe.

If you are there for a whole week you MUST run in Central Park. Again, you will be with hundreds of others doing the same thing. Just get your bearings before you start (pick a detailed building to use as a marker) so you know where you are and you will have an awesome run in the middle of 60+ story buildings!! DO IT!!

Don, you rock! Nuthin' else to say. 10 miles with 2 ft. of snow on the ground!!?? Dam!!!
