Just finished my 1st 1/2 marathon!!!

After 7 months of training, I just finished my first half marathon in Little Rock and I can't even begin to tell you the feeling I had crossing that finish line!! I cried like a baby and I'm so proud of myself! What started out as just wanting to drop a few pounds has turned into so much more....it's helped my mental game and helped me stay focused on a goal! I have started training for a full marathon and can't wait to travel to different states and race! Why didn't someone tell me about this sport a long time ago? haha

Re: Just finished my 1st 1/2 marathon!!!

Congratualtions!
I pegged my first one in August of last year - The Rock-n-Roll half in Virginia Beach. It truly is a wonderful feeling! I am running the Shamrock half this weekend here in Virginia Beach, the Rock-n-Roll again this year in August; Then - this same Shamrock, sponsored by YingLing consists of a full marathon too. My first will be the Shamrock Marathon in 2009. It's a wonderful, flat course, and the weather is great here this time of year. Additionally, (and if I'm that good by then), the Shamrock is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. (The Boston's on my Bucket List B-) )

My ultimate goal is to qualify for Boston..but I'm afraid that is many years away. I have a lot of work to do before i do something that crazy! And the Rock n Roll marathon is definitely on my list of ones to do! I would LOVE to do one in each state...we'll see. i'm just getting my feet wet and right now I have a hurt foot so training is kinda on hold. Keep workin'...maybe I'll see you in Boston!

Re: Just finished my 1st 1/2 marathon!!!
well congrats on making the decision to train for your first half marathon! it's a huge step and there's no feeling in this world that compares to crossing that finish line. i was in tears!! i started from scratch so it took me a good 6 momths to be able to build up my endurance for 13.1 miles, but now there's no stopping. i loved the whole experience that i just started training again...only this time it's for the full 26.2!! good luck with your training and enjoy every minute of it. it will be a very rewarding experience....i promise!

EXCELLENT! My first attempt at a Half Marathon will be the Knysna Forest Marathon in South Africa. What was your nutrition plan before the race and did you take any suppl?

Re: Just finished my 1st 1/2 marathon!!!
well i'm glad that you are doing a half marathon! that's awesome and i couldn't be more proud of people who take that first step! as far as nutrition, while i was in training, i made sure to eat small, low calorie meals every 2-3 hours to keep my metabolism up. the night before the race, i had pasta (of course, gotta stick to tradition). the morning of the race, i had 2 bagels about an hour before gun time. i did an energy gel at mile 6, but i brought my own. don't do anything new that you haven't done in your training. hope this helps and good luck with your training...let me know how the race turns out!

Re: Just finished my 1st 1/2 marathon!!!
Thanks for the advice, I will keep it in mind. I have been reading up on nutrition and suppl like a mad person. It is the 2 Oceans marathon in Cape Town today. That is the plan for 2009.

Re: Just finished my 1st 1/2 marathon!!!
Congratulations on completing your first half and welcome to marathon madness. I've been doing this since 2005 and I'm hooked!!! I know Little Rock is a ways from California, but if you feel like traveling, the California International Marathon in Sacramento is downhill. Not steep, just downhill. It's 13.1 of rolling hills in the beginning, then a pretty steady decline to the capitol. It was my fourth marathon, and besides one in Eugene, my favorite. I, too, train on big hills and the hills on this one are easy. Eugene, though, was beautiful. Good luck with your training - you're off to a great start!

Re: Just finished my 1st 1/2 marathon!!!

Just wait until you finish your first Marathon! You will love it. That is awesome that you have accomplished that feat in such a short time. You should go to www.athlinks.com and put your name in Athletes, your races will come up and then you will find yourself obsessed with it. Good luck to you!
