    lenz -

LOL - good call on the nap.

I PRd at last year's Dismal Swamp Stomp at 1:52 and change.  I haven't been on the road at all this year - was diagnosed with three herniated discs, one of which was jammed against my right sciatic nerve.  While I don't advocate recreational pharmaceutical use, whoever invented vicodin should get a Nobel prize.

I went to an orhtopaedic rehabilitative specialist who built me some custom orthotic inserts (two MRIs, three foot bone scans and some other stuff that was probably all made up so he could charge me more).  I have been in them for almost two weeks now and ran for the first time since December and it was miserable.  Everything from my hips down is in new alignment and the pain was excruciating for about a week (see the paragraph above about vicodin round 2).  I am slowly getting back into it and am up to 5 miles but the recovery is no fun.

I am running this year's Dismal Swamp Stomp on 19 April and honestly, my goal right now is to finish under 2:30.  If I somehow manage to get better legs underneath me between now and then I'll take it, but I think it's better to ease back in than to force it and get jacked up again.

    Best to you.

PKHII83 - tough one with the back.  Hopefully it will heal well enough to let you run comfortably.   I don't need the drugs but my wife has extensive back problems (she's not a runner) so I know all about the pharmaceuticals.  Best of luck at Dismal Swamp.

I thought I posted this earlier but I guess it never made it. . .

The Shamrock results are listed in finishing order by GUN time. Apparently this is a USATF rule. You're finishing place is the order you cross the finish, not the time it takes you to cross the finish. So if you start further back, you could end up with a worse finish even though you might have a faster chip time. I think BQ is still chip time but in some races it could be the difference between placing and not placing in your division. Odd.

Gun time is still the official finishing time.  Though like Charlie said, Boston takes chip time, as do most races that require a qualifying time.  I have seen a few races that give age-group awards based on chip time.

I am sorry to hear about your back. That must be very painful. Specially to take the joy of running or doing something you like, health is one of the most important things in everyone's life and a lot of time everyone takes that for granted, not to think of about it when we are healthy. I hope the best recovery for you and definetly take it slow don't push it to hard.
