Motivation?

Hi there! I am new to this whole site and I am getting geared up to start running again. I was a competitive runner, oh say 6 years ago, but since then I have not run. I am going to do the Couch to 5K program and I am in need of some motivation. As I sit at my desk at work I feel like I could run for hours, but as soon as I get home, the couch pulls me in and I am stuck!

I'm not sure what is going to get me going, but I need something. Any suggestions?

Re: Motivation?
I have a terrible time sticking to an evening workout regimen (I usually try to run in the morning). That said, you can't always choose when you have the time to run, so I like to take everything that I need to work out (shoes, socks, jogbra, shorts, shirt, water bottle) and lay it out or hang it up full-person size somewhere that I have to step over it or at least walk past it to get to the lazy spot (couch, recliner, whatever) and preferably where I can actually see it from the sofa. Then that fit badda$$ chick that wears those sneakers looks at me and my box of Ho-Ho's and provides some extra incentive. That's step one. Step two means you have to actually do something, so I tell myself that I'm going to put all that on and just go run for six minutes. I don't want to go, but I can tolerate anything for six minutes, right? So you get out there and for three or four minutes you still don't want to do it, but then you start to warm up and hit your stride and think about other things (like dodging traffic) and next thing you know you're on a real run. Other than the mental aspect of it, your blood sugar may be playing a role - so be sure and have a scheduled afternoon snack to keep your energy up. Your sofa should have to make an appointment with you to get your time! :D

Re: Motivation?

Hi, here is one of my trick.

Register yourself, in advance, into a local event that would take place at the end of your training plan.

The fact that you already paid for it should work by itself :-)

Re: Motivation?

I also use the event motivator to keep me on track. Another thing, have you ever considered running in the morning before you go to work. I am always much less motivated to run when I get home from work than I am in the morning. My dog keeps me on track on days that I don't feel like going for a run, she's kind of my drill sergeant! :) You were a competitive running not that long ago, I'll bet those competitive juices will kick in once you get started and it will get much easier! Good luck!!

Re: Motivation?

DO NOT ENTER THE LIVING ROOM!!! That is my advice. I'm not a morning person. I function much better in die evenings. That said, it still doesn't mean that I am a bundle of joy after an eight hour work day. So to make sure that I do not chicken out - I do not enter the living room or switch on the TV or anything else that will destract me. I simply walk in the front door, go to my room, get my gear and go!!

But I agree with dog-lover: just get started and what you loved about competitive running will all come back. Enjoy and good luck

Re: Motivation?

Welcome to the site. myself am still pretty new to this, just started a few weeks ago. As far as for motivation, think of a sport you really enjoy, don't just run for the exercise. The best way to excersice is to do a sport that is enjoyed, otherwise it will always be some sort of a drag to get out there. You used to run so think of what enthusiastic you to run in the first place. This might trigger your motivation.

Re: Motivation?
I was lacking motivation recently, and the only thing that finally worked was to go ahead and register for the 5K I kept thinking about. I'm a couple weeks behind in training now because of those two weeks of slacking, but now having the event paid for has gotten my rear in gear!!! Hopefully I can make up for lost time!
