TRAILBLAZERS ~ 3/24

Hi All!

I just thought I'd start a thread for all of us. It would be nice to just keep it weekly so there aren't too many pages of posts to search through. How about we just use Monday as the start date and put that on the thread title.

So, how's it going this week? I see some of us are doing well this week.

I've kept up with my runs. The last run was terrible. I ate horrible, didn't drink enough water, so my run sucked. I wanted to do a 5K, but all I could muster was 30 min. I started out way too fast and then just didn't have any energy in the end. I will run tonight, so hopefully that will go better. I'll make sure it's at a more sustainable pace.

Oh, and if you don't see a "TRAILBLAZERS" thread on Monday, just start it on up! :-)

Niki, I don't really worry about people during my runs. We live in the country/forest area and I'm more concerned about cars as we don't have any sidewalks. I think it's really weird that some kids would be giving you ****. Just be safe!

Re: TRAILBLAZERS ~ 3/24

It's so nice to see this thread here first thing! Glad we're continuing the group :)

Niki, I get distracted very easily, and even back when I used to ride a bike and walk every day I never trusted drivers. Even the nice ones are stupid sometimes and I've almost been hit many many times. I haven't had anyone yell at me yet, though. Well, I once had a construction worker whistle at me, but I took it as a compliment ;)

It's been so nice outside that all I've wanted to do is run, but I've been busy with work and babying my knees. I just got off of work and think I might get in a quick run before bed, though. I'm going for 3 miles this time! BTW, I checked out those sites and I think I'm going to start Hal Higdon's spring training. It looks nice and gradual.

Re: TRAILBLAZERS ~ 3/24

So good to "see" you all here! I've done 4 runs now since "graduation day". The last 2, I did my 21 laps or 5K. My legs definitely feel it. And it takes me until about the tenth lap until my breathing really gets regulated. But that's ok. Once the breathing kicks in, it's like I'm walking (except my legs are also screaming at me by that time). It's taken me about 42 minutes so I'm slow, but not too bad. I'm also trying to lengthen my stride and improve on my speed. I've been able to give up the Podcasts LOL and really like running to my music. I think it makes me go faster too. I'm so excited to still be out there running (ok, it's only been a week, but still...) Who woulda thought??? AND I had 2 people notice my weight loss today at work for the first time. Very exciting. Ok, so how are the rest of you doing.

Oh, Niki, since I'm just running around the parking lot of my complex at 5:00 in the morning, I don't run into many people (thank goodness). I've only run on the street in the afternoon 3 or 4 times. But I know my cousin, who started running about a year ago, has gotten hollered at by boys in a car before. It's likely just teenage boys being teenage boys - they don't always think about what they're doing before they do it - but still, always keep your eyes open for anything that doesn't seem "right".

I'm mildly self-conscious when I run, but I've never been "hollered at." I just get a few strange looks when I'm running in the streets in snowy weather. :p

I've only been running two times a week since the program ended! I really need a new goal, because I've been slacking off.

Re: TRAILBLAZERS ~ 3/24

That's great, Jill! Fanatastic time too. I've done 5k on my little route a couple of times now and while my time improves a little bit each time, the fastest I've done it so far is 43 minutes. Thankfully, my 5K isn't until the end of May so I have time to improve on my speed. And really, my main goal yet is to just finish the race. That will be a major accomplishment for me. I've found a small 3K to do in my home town in September too. I may try to do it with my ds, but if not, my parents can watch him while I do the run. There's a 14K that day too, but that's just a little too much for me - plus I know the route they're running and there are two tremendous hills on it. they'd have to scrape me up off the ground......

I don't know if any one would be interested in doing this, but on another running forum I've joined, we do a "virtual" 5K every couple of weeks. So, they pick a time frame of 4-5 days and everyone runs their 5K and posts their results. We aren't racing each other, just trying to improve on our own times and it gives us something to keep focussed on and improve upon. Does that sound like something that would help us keep motivated here? We could do it once every week or two or once a month? Just a suggestion on how to keep us motivated. Some folks run on the treadmill, some folks run it outside, some folks walk most of it (that wouldn't be us c25K graduates, of course). LOL

Re: TRAILBLAZERS ~ 3/24

I think a virtual 5k is a great idea. Just set the time and I'm in.

Jill, good job! Your time seems pretty darn good to me :D Don't you love the fact that you had people chasing after you? My 5k is in a few weeks and I'm getting nervous already, but I'm excited just to be IN a 5k, which is something I thought I'd never do because I was overweight and definitely "not a runner". Tell your husband I said congratulations too.

I'm still in my first week of hhst and tonight is my 3 mile run. I've been having a hard time juggling work and weight training and running, so hopefully this program will help me create some kind of schedule. I did a short 1.5 mile run yesterday and while my time isn't fantastic I upped it a bit. It was freezing outside (it's been snowing) and so I wussed out and went to the gym to use a treadmill and I ended up tripping during the first mile and bruising my knee. Can't WAIT to be running outside for good. (Although I'm sure with my clumsiness I'm a source of endless entertainment to the long row of elliptical users behind me).

Re: TRAILBLAZERS ~ 3/24

Wow Jill, that's great! I haven't signed up for any 5ks yet. I think my biggest obstacle is mental. I want to make sure I can do it first. I have low expectations of myself.

I had two good runs last weekend. I ran 30 min on Saturday and 32 minutes on Sunday. I was testing myself. I didn't think I could do it two days in a row, but my body is starting to recover faster. For 30 minutes, I'm averaging roughly 2.8 miles (using the program on Google maps). I especially felt good yesterday. The weather was nice so I drove out to an all-purpose trail. It wasn't very busy and it felt very peaceful in fact.

I also like the idea of the virtual 5k. It motivates and let you track improvements.

I haven't lost any weight per sae (I'm fortunate that I don't have to lose), but I've noticed my legs firming up in areas I never knew they could firm up!
