I had my first bike ride today

I've been wanting to get a bike for quite some time, but I just can't stomach the cost of buying a new one, especially not even knowing how much I'll ride or if I'll like a road bike or mountain bike better.

So, I bought a used one from a guy on Craigslist today. It actually worked out really well, the guy is in the Army and he's training with his wife to run a marathon. They both ride, but he's gotten a new bike and just needed to get rid of this one.

So, I got a Ross mountain bike, in really good condition, for $25. I was a safety conscious person and bought a helmet, and the helmet almost cost more than the bike.

Anyway, I took it out for a spin, and ****, it was rough!! I had a blast though, I rode around some of the places I run, and I didn't realize how hard, yet how fun riding a bike is!! Now I know why I was in such good shape as a kid - we used to think nothing of riding 20 miles a day or more, and we'd chalk that up as recreation/transportation, not exercise.

I could really get into this biking thing!!

Sounds like fun FG. I remember those days, too. Came home from school, hopped on bike, rode all over neighborhood with friends, came home from dinner, left house again and came home for bedtime. I rode my bike to and from school everyday, too.

Bikeriding's fun but I get sore and I've tried so many seats, let me tell you. Running over here for me. However, I do enjoy bikeriding with my kids on weekends or on long bike trails.

Thats how it begins. I was primarily a runner for years, rode a little but not much. Then I injured a knee and started to ride more...that was 13 years ago. I still run some, but ride about 10,000 miles a year now. I too started out with a fairly inexpensive bike and you dont want to know what that leads to You are hooked now, and there sis no turning back.

Congratulations! You'll soon find you need to buy a road bike, a hybrid, and an upgrade to your mountain bike (which you'll use exclusively on the trails, the drag on the road will become unbearable).

Check to see if there's a biking club near you. Group rides are a lot of fun, and a great way to learn new routes and meet new people.

Have fun!

It doesn't matter. If you are new to riding though, I would check out the level of riders in the group ride. If everyone is on road bikes and they plan on a 40 miler at a decent pace you may get separated from the pack. I found out we have an all female riding group here that I can't wait to get hooked up with.

I went out and bought a bike carrier that I can strap onto my trunk, and the bike is headed along with me to my parents house for a long Thanksgiving weekend. Hopefully I'll get to test it out on some flatter roads down in Mobile.

Well, yeah if you go out with a bunch of road bikers you will look like a tool. But if you find a group of beginners, go for it! We have clubs around here for every level from 40+ slowpokes to wickedfast racers.

Re: I had my first bike ride today
Biking is incredibly fun.

I use it for transportation, for health, to save gas money (Let the fools drive their cars!!!), to get my kids some exercise, to lift my spirits, to get some fresh air, to enjoy the seasons, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to contribute to energy savings across the board. I really don't understand why more people don't do it. I watch people drive everywhere and I figure probably 75% of those people could be biking where they're going. I feel like people just don't "think" about biking, but if they all hopped on a bike they'd have the same epiphanies the rest of us two-wheelers have experienced.

Ok, I'm done now.

Coming out of lurking because biking really IS so much fun! Since you have a MTB, how about finding some trails in your area? I have both road and MT and enjoy the off road stuff best of all. The other posters are right, it can get addictive.

OK, I think I'm officially hooked. I bought a bike rack to put my bike on top of the trunk, and brought it down to my folks house for the long Thanksgiving weekend. I did about a 40 minure ride today, and I swear, this is every bit the workout that running is.

I don't think I'm ready to completely give up running, but I'm enjoying this!

That's great, Flab! And Hiiiiii!!!!
I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying your bike. It's such good cross training.

I just got back from a chilly ride around town in 35º weather. It was awesome.

Thanks, y'all!! You know what I think I really like about it? I mean, besides that it's fun, and it sort of takes me back to being a kid, and it's a great workout? I love covering more distance and just going all out, or as fast as I can, and seeing so much more.

I hate that I can't have an MP3 player with me while I ride, but hey, it's ok!

Covering the distance is a big draw for me, too. I mean, I'm never going to run 30 - 40 miles, but I sure can ride it. I love going down new roads, seeing the horse farms, etc. I love looking at maps and planning my ride. It's totally cool.
