jogging stroller and pace

I just wanted to double-post this so I have a better shot at getting some answers....

I'm looking for some input from anyone who has used a jogging stroller. I am running in my very first 5K Thanksgiving morning. Currently I can run 2-2.5 miles at a 12 to 12:30 pace without pushing it. I've been running on and off for almost a year, I was running over 3 miles back in the spring, started back up again last month and that is where I'm at now.
Anyway, I am excited about running this 5K and am curious how much pushing a 20lb baby and stroller will affect my time. I'd like my first race to be without the stroller, so I have a 'first 5k" time to improve on, but I really have no other option for the baby.

So my question is, what have you found is the difference between your stroller/non-stroller paces? I'm curious what my 'real' 5K pace would be. Thanks!

Re: jogging stroller and pace
There's a local guy (JasonsDrivingForce - in the Raleigh community thread) that runs most of his races with a stroller. (He's down in the 19's for a 5k with the stroller, but don't let that intimidate you.) He's found he's often faster with the stroller because he can transfer some of his weight to it. Of course this doesn't apply to up-hill courses, which he admits can be very punishing.

I believe he posted a set of recommendations for stroller running, most of which I can't remember. However, one of the big ones was ALWAYS KEEP AT LEAST ON HAND ON THE STROLLER AT ALL TIMES DURING THE RUN. Sure, you may have that wrist strap hooked up, but do you really want to risk losing control? Even if you don't let it get away from you, it might turn suddenly and spill, and how would you feel then?

Re: jogging stroller and pace
I add one minute per mile when I am running with my stroller on an average (i.e. not mountainous) course. In a crowded 5K, however, it could be more since you'll have to hang in the back or be very vocal and aggressive about passing people.
