Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)
Thanks runNswim. I love the shoe dog. It was so easy and now I know what to look for. I guess Academy will have the Asics. I've tried to find races on coolrunning and I've tried googling. I just don't think we have a lot in my area. I will keep looking though!!!

Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)

Ok, W3D2 under my belt. Yay! I took my younger dog running with me today. She's half-German Shepherd and half Husky , so when she's not trying to herd me, she's trying to pull me like a sled. :) She got the idea a little bit about halfway through, so I think she will make a good running partner. Thank you all for welcoming me into the group.

Run like H3ll !!

Carol,

I took the liberty of Googling "Houston area 5K" and I found a link that may be helpful for for you: Houston Area Road Runners Association

I know you said you live a good distance from Houston, but they may be able to point you in the right direction.

HIH,

Ed

Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)

Thanks for the link fatmanrunning. I will definately check it out. I just may have to go to Houston if I can't find a 5K here.

Sounds like we all need to get a dog to take with us if they pull you!! Might make that first 20 min run easier :). I have a rottweiler but he weighs over 100 lbs and is almost 9 years old. I don't think he would last very long!!!

Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)

Well - I finished my W4D1 last night and did pretty good. I could not keep my usual pace of walk @ 3 mph and jog @ 5 mph. Here is what I ended up doing

Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes) - 5 mph

Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds) - 3 mph

Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes) - 5 mph for about 2 minutes and I did the rest at 4 mph

Walk 1/4 mile (or 2-1/2 minutes) - 3 mph

Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes) - 4 mph

Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds) - 3 mph

Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes) - 4 mph for 4 minutes and I did the last minute at 5 mph

I am going to try and keep my 5 mph on the jog for D2 - as for the toe thing. Today, so far so good, however I did loosen my shoe strings, used seamless socks and TOOK OFF MY TOE RINGS!!!!!! Just an FYI - YES,,,,,, I am BLONDE!!

I have a question, is anyone using Robert Ullrey's C25K Podcasts????

Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)
Woohoo... I'm happy to say I am finished with W3D2. The entire session went pretty good, the last 3min jog was the hardest. I was breathing pretty hard for the last 20 or so seconds there. I am really worried about being able to keep up after week 4. Yikes!!!!

runNswim - Kudos to your husband for coming up with what is looking like will be our group name. I have a question for you... in your last post you talked about losing weight when you did C25K previously. Did you diet as well as do C25K or can you attribute the weight loss just to C25K? I am really, really hoping to lose some weight with this program. Like you, I have about 10lbs leftover from my last pregnancy that I need to shed. My babygirl is 10mo old now so I figured those last 10lbs were here to stay unless I got off my butt and did something about it. I don't think I'm a horrible eater so was hoping to lose the weight through exercise vs. dieting which I know I wouldn't stick to in the long run. I'm more likely to keep active then diet long term.

Katers - Glad you found the solution to your toes hurting. I must say, I nearly hit myself in the head reading your post. Those dang toe rings. Ha ha!!!! It's encouraging to read your posts since you're in W4. I'm skeered but know I can push through it... now W5 is going to be a totally different story. :-)

Good Luck to everyone else doing their workouts in the next couple of days.

Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)
Hi all! It was so nice to find this forum and even more exciting to find others who are in the same week!! I always wanted to run, but never tried. I was always the cheerleader and tumbler growing up and even now I coach cheerleading and tumbling for fun. But I will tell you running is so much different and requires such a different type of stamina! I just wanted to say a quick HI before I jumped all the way into this group!

Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)

867-5308 - (Jennie?) - I find it interesting that you are dreading W5. I look at W5 being easier than W4 - here is why - for me W5 seems to have more recovery time after the jogs. In W4 the 90 second recovery was not enough for me. W5 will give me a 3 minute recovery - okay........ I know......wait until next week when I have to EAT MY WORDS!!! -:0

runNswim - I too would like to know more about your weight loss. I am working on the 20 lbs I gained after quitting a 20 year 2 pack a day smoking habit. So any tips you have would be WONDERFUL. Here is a question / thought, after I do my workout, I am starving!!! Is anyone else experiencing that?

As for the name of the Group - I like them all !

Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)
I use Robert's podcasts, and I have to say, I don't really love the music, but I do love that I don't have to keep track of time! And really, I get used to the music after the 2nd time. I think they're great! I run on Tuesdays and Thursdays, go to the gym Monday, Wednesday and Friday, which is why I'm only finishing W2, been doing each week over 2 weeks (4 times) before moving to the next week. I find that it's helping but I'm dreading the 3 minute runs next week! Good Luck to all, and keep up the good work!

Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)

just finished w3d2...sooooo much better than d1 for me! largely because it wasn't raining and super cold so my ears weren't hurting. it felt mostly good the whole way through, and by the time my legs started to feel pretty tight, it was done. i felt so great i threw in an extra 90 second run before the cool down walk. super!

i started out using robert's podcasts, but the music REALLY got to me. so i went in to my itunes library, clicked the tab that organizes songs by length, and picked songs i liked that were the length of each segment. with over 4 thousand songs, i had plenty to choose from that were the right length. since doing this, my runs have been SO MUCH BETTER!!! i really reccommend that people do this if they're able!

Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)

Mind if i join the group? Don't know the schedule but have read couch to 5k plans. I've been running strickly on treadmill and can run 2.5 miles @ 5mph comfortably right now.

History- 29yrs of smoking- starting on Chantix on Saturday to quit as I've reach the point I can't advance anymore due to the cancer sticks. So on 4/26 I'll be smoke free. Anyhow- 46yr old- been fat for last 25 yrs. Got hurt, went thru 3 month shoulder surgery rehab and got into habit of working out at gym for rehab. Once they booted me out of rehab, i joined the gym and still work out 3x per week, basically circuit training. So I finally got on the treadmill thats been sitting in the basement for 5 yrs- very good one-gym quality, and since October of 2007 I've lost as of today 40# thru exercise and treadmill work. I couldn't do any walking at start without dying but then I worked my way up to 3.8mph walking for 1/2 hr+. Then about 3 weeks ago I say to myself- "Self- Do I think i might be able to get my overweight self to run?" Self says"don't know- speedup the treadmill and see how fast we can jog. My BMI has went from 34.45 OBESE down to 28.19 overweight. I'm losing about 2# per week. So now the Gollum in me (for the Lord of the Ring fans) is eating at my brain to RUN... no stay on the couch....Run....no stay on the couch...

I win because i'm going to run. Went to running store, got fitted with a nice pair of Saucony running shoes and am now running at 5mph for 1/2 hr. Of course I'm exhuasted in a good kind of a way. My brother runs marathons, tris, etc so he's got me going. I'm the fat kid in the family- bro and sis are health nuts. I'm about to be.

Now my goal is to run the 5K- registering tomorrow, but its not until the end of June so I have time to get better. So I beating my weight, gonna beat cig addiction, and gonna run without stopping in the 5K .

I even went as far as to have a CT scan of my lungs- NOTHING abnormal- -can't believe that (yes I feared it was too late and i gave myself cancer)

Tomorrow, I'm getting off the treadmill and going to actually run on the rural road I live on. My bro says I goota hit the real road. Wish me luck. I'm taking in all I can on the net to properly train to run. I do have shin splints-but i've learned about that also (too much, too fast).

So I guess I need directed to the actual web page for the plan you doing.

Sorry for being so long on my intro..

Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)
Hi slaptear!

Here is the link for the program: C25K Plan
Congrats on deciding to quit smoking! I've been smoke-free for 9 years now, after smoking for 25. The thing that did it for me was to have a healthy substitute for the cigarette itself. The nicotine jones went away in about a week, but the oral-compulsive side of the addiction is what was hard for me to beat. I started carrying cinnamon sticks, holding them like a smoke, drawing air through them like a smoke, etc. They did the trick! I still keep some handy even nine years later for when I get the urge I've heard of people using licorice roots in the same manner, though I don't know where to get them. (Trader Joe's?). I would advise against using tootsie pops or other candy as a sub because your metabolism will slow down somewhat without the nicotine. Oh, yeah...for every ten days you are quit, put the $40.00 you would have spent on a carton into the bank!! Talk about motivation!! Good luck!

For those who are dreading the 20 minute run in week 5, from one who's been there before.... be prepared to surprise yourself! :)

Re: Week 3 C25K (Week of April 14)

I will be doing w2d3 tonight. I'm a little behind because I was sick over the weekend. I have found a 5k that will take place on 05/17. I won't be finished with this program yet but I should be in week 7. I was thinking of using it as one of my running days. What do you think? Have any of you run a 5k before finishing the program?

Welcome slaptear. You made me laugh so I would love for you to join us!!
