Nita, just remember, everyone runs slower in the warmer weather. Even the elites. It's not about your total time as much as it's about your finish relative to your goals and the conditions. Relax. When did finishing a marathon stop being a big enough deal all by itself???? Remember, it's a marathon! And not many people even train for them. Fewer still finish them.
You'll be fine! (That "fine" should not be taken in the form of the traditional female "fine" which means "f-you buddy")

Okay, guys, I'm trying to keep this in perspective. Galloway says for every five degrees over 60 the temp is, you need to add 30 seconds to your mile pace. Maybe that's why I was dragging so much in that 80 degrees outside before lunch. The 80% humidity didn't help. Probably didn't help that I ran the first mile at 8:35 either, which is way too fast for me to start out. Whatever. I'm just going to pretend that run didn't happen
I'll just wait and see what the weather is like and adjust accordingly, and hope for the best.

Overhead sun, adapting to warmer weather, and taperosis; it'll be OK. Sports physiologists note that you can vasodilate enough to send about seven liters of blood per minute through skin circulation for cooling purposes. With most of us having much less pumping capacity than elite runners, that means that slower runners will slow dysproportionately more than most faster runners, given that 7 liters will be a much higher percentage of what they can pump maximally........

Re: Must be taper madness :)
Is that for a training run or a marathon? It sounds kinda high. I ran Chicago at about 10 min/mile pace; it was 73 at the start and 88 by my finish. So average that out to say 80 degrees, my marathon PR pace is exactly 9 min/mile; even if I was in PR mode, that's 15 sec/mile per 5 degrees over 60. As for your training run, don't sweat it (sorry).

Re: Must be taper madness :)
So what you're saying is, it's going to take me 6 hours instead of 5?
I noticed I couldn't keep my heart rate down in the heat either. It would be at 168 or so, which is about my limit before I pull back. Then I'd let it get down to 158 or so and as soon as I started jogging again, it shot back up! I actually starting feeling a little dizzy. I'm not looking forward to this summer. In Texas.

There used to be a Canadian website with a calculator letting you guesstimate the effects of altitude, elevation changes, humidity, wind, and temperature on maximal performance, and their slowdown was less than what is on the Galloway guide (which is probably more safety-focused than some sites because of all the folks with way less long-distance experience or acclimatization than Jeff himself had at his prime who use his site).

Nita, we run at about the same "heart rate" pace for our respective ages. I'm usually kicking back around 171-172 and going down to 163 comfortably. The heat will definitely elevate your heart rate. Not much you can do about it except slow down.

Not the answer I was looking for
Maybe we'll all be surprised and it will be 50's and cloudy after all.
