I believe there are some leagues in which face masks are mandatory and that it probably varies greatly across regions.
Do you think face masks should be made mandatory for batters to wear?
i think they each school should provide them just to provide that safety, i dont know if they shoul be mandatory though
I think it should be each individual's decision to wear a face mask or not while at the plate. Similar to each person's choice to wear a mouth guard or not. If you want to take the risk, it should be your prerogative.
Face masks should be mandatory. A pitcher probably feels more comfortable throwing to a batter with a face mask then without. Everyone wears them or everyone doesn't. I I see it as not just a safety issue.
I think they should be mandatory. I remember not liking the idea growing up of having to switch to and get used to wearing face masks that my coach mandated--but it didn't take long for me to appreciate that rule. For the amount of games we played it wasn't rare to see a face injury... or many times an injury that would have been if not for the mask a girl was wearing.
I remember one large weekend tournament an ambulance came to the complex on three occassions--all of which were related to girls getting hit in the face by the ball. It just doesn't seem worth the risk, especially because, in my opinion, it doesn't take long to get used to wearing a face mask while up to bat.
Here is an article about the third Arizona softball player to have a serious face injury: 3rd player with facial injury eyes using mask
Facemasks should be mandatory. While high school athletics is about teaching many lessons in life, being safe is the most important thing. It took girl's lacrosse some time to adapt to the madatory eye guards and now it is a non issue. Given time, facemasks will be the same for softball.
I think under a certain age you can consider making it mandatory, but after high school it should be up to the player since in high school pitchers should be accurate enough not hit people on a regular basis and hitters should be experienced enough to react to a wild pitch.
Mandatory! Safty first! I know it probably sucks for the players to get used to another rule, but in the long run is good for them.
I think it should be the player's choice. Part of playing the game is the idea that you might get hurt. It helps separate good players from great players. It is also quite distracting to look through bars as you are trying to track the ball.
Probably so. The balls are just too darn hard.
No, I believe it should be left up to the individual or parent if it is theri desire for the safetry of their daughter.
You are probably right. The only thing is that some people who would otherwise wear them won't just because they don't want to stand out or look like a nerd.
Right up to U16, all batters should e required to wear a cage on their helmets. I alto suggest that all pitchers up to U16 should be wearing a gameface mask. Have you ever seen a girl take a line drive in the head? I see the corners wearilng them on some teams now, too.
No.....I believe its solely on the League or Batter. I've played baseball for over 10yrs at all different levels, and I have found out that the younger you are the more likely you would wear a face mask. But once you get older the mask gets to be uncomfortable and a distraction.
I believe face masks should be mandatory for a number of reasons. 1) This requirement relieves the school/league from any liability, 2) It is not that difficult for batters to obtain face masks, 3) It doesn't obstruct the batters view when batting and 4) It easily prevents the sometimes fatal head/face injuries.
