Re: Monday's... run?
I need to win the lottery so I can quit work and have time to organize all my running plans. And pay for them My daughter has assured me that if I ran 4:10 in Nashville, I can BQ in Houston in January, that it's a great course, flat and fast, lots of support, and perfect weather. So we've got the midnight El Scorcho in July, St. George October 4th, MCM October 26th, San Antonio Nov. 11th, then I'll rest up for Houston in January. And then I'll buy my ticket to Boston! Perfect! FormerBAM wrote:

Re: Monday's... run?
I know, I don't envy your BQ qualifying time. If the course had been flat this weekend AND I hadn't stopped twice for potty breaks, I think I could have shaved off 9:40. Hills absolutely kill me. Not my legs, but cardiovascularly. So I'm thinking St. George, all downhill, three weeks before MCM, maybe I can BQ at that one and then just come to MCM for the party. Hey, it's a thought. Yes, 80 seconds for 26 consecutive miles is a LOT of ticks. And it's a while before your BQ time goes up too, huh? It's okay, I'll go again when you get there. Hey, Marathoner06, I believe Len mentioned that Philly one to me as a fast marathon this weekend. When is that again? November? You're coming to MCM, right? You'll meet everyone then!! The most positive thing you have going is that the pain goes away after you run for a while. This is how mine acts. Generally speaking, pain from stress fracture or compartment syndrome persists throughout and after exercise. Another thing I have read is a "point pain" is more indicative of a stress fracture, while pain over an area up and down is more likely shin splints. I don't know how true this is. The most definitive way to detect stress fracture is with a bone scan. A comparison of X-rays taken several weeks apart can show a stress fracture because the new bone will look different on the 2nd picture. There are a number of places you can check online for a comparison of symptoms, Runners World has some info, as does Dr. Pribut Pribut's explanation gets a little technical so you may have to work to follow it (http://www.drpribut.com/sports/spshin.html). Shin splints backing off and cross-training, stress fracture is an absolute layoff for 6 - 8 weeks, compartment syndrome usually requires surgery and a relatively long recovery period.
Back to the topic of the thread for a minute. I only told Jerry but I was scheduled to run my twice a year physical fitness test today. I ran it with flying colors. I managed 18 pull-ups, 100 crunches, and a 19:07 three mile finish. I was amazed to do so well. My legs felt tender but once I started running I could hardly tell that I ran so many miles Saturday. I dropped 1 pull-up from my last one and ran almost a minute slower. I stink!!!! Jimmy PS My new Pearl Izumi Peak XC running shoes are awesome!!!!!!!!!!
My current plan is to ignore it and hope it goes away. Seriously, I will give it a week to get over the "I just ran a marathon" soreness and see if it's still a problem. Mine seems to be "point pain," but it doesn't hurt when I'm running long distances. Just when I first start running it hurts and when I walk sometimes it's sore. Well, except today it's very sore. All the time. I'll check the Runners World symtpom checker. I can't follow complicated technical medical explanations, even if I'm only bottle blonde.

Only 18 pull-ups and 100 crunches? How embarrassing! And what were you doing, CRAWLING the whole three miles? You're insane. You know that, right?

No, i wont be at mcm this year. I ran it in 2006 and decided to do Philly this year. I really cant, with my kids ages, run as many marathons a year as you guys manage. I wish i could but job and family prevent it. I plan in my golden years to finally place in some events- if I can continue to maintain my blistering 12 minute mile I may win my age group in 30 years( 73 years old) Yeah! we should all have such lofty goals. Anyway- Philly is nov 23.

We only have to get 3 pull-ups and 52 crunches in 2 minutes and a run time of 28 minutes for three miles. I finished high high first class which is best. Only 3 of my young Marines beat me as well so I still have old man bragging rights. (Remember I can retire at 41).

"Hey, I think I'll run a marathon plus 6 or 7 miles on Saturday and then do a PFT on Monday." And to hit a 19:07 on the 3 mile???? WOW! Gunny, you rock.
Re: Monday's... run?
Some of us are planning to run Philly. I will be barring disaster between now and then. Holly is planning to but of course needs to start running again after hip surgery. Sara has also been talking about it but needs to recover from her injury. Philly is in November, 4 weeks after MCM this year (they're usually 3 weeks apart). Philly was 19th best by percent of finishers who BQed, and 3rd by absolute number of qualifiers. Here is the link: http://www.marathonguide.com/races/BostonMarathonQualifyingRaces.cfm |
