Jill, I must have typed that incorrectly. If you have plantar fasciitis stretching ones calves is extremely important. It is the tight muscles that causes pf. Stretch those calves!

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Michael sorry about the ankle. Sounds like it wasn't too bad at any rate.

Well I didn't run for about a week. I was slacking. Terrible! Today I ran 3.4 miles which included some speed intervals. It felt good to get back to running.

Have a good day all.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

I had a really good workout today!  I am still pretty sore, but it didn't seem to affect my running, so that's good!  I did a 5K on the TM at the gym in 35m, and then finished out the hour with the steep incline (hiking) to keep my HR up, but without the high impact of running.  Boy, I was a huge sweaty mess and it felt great!  The gym felt really hot though.  I need to cut off the short sleeves on my workout shirts, they are starting to get annoying.  ha!

Oh, and I registered last night for a 5K this Saturday!  It should be fun!

Jcrule nice workout and good luck with your 5k.

Well I ran a fairly slow 3.6 miles today. Tomorrow I'll try to swim after work. I just need to get to work early.

Have a good day all.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Yesterday I squeezed in my 1.5M run.  It was the first 3-day consecutive running I've done since starting the C25K.  I'm kind of tired today.  LOL

You know what??  I'm finding that my PF has actually gotten better!  Not gone, but not even close to what it was over a year ago....while not even exercising at all!  I was in such pain that I asked straight up for the cortizone shot back then.  I'm wondering if running is not only strengthening my foot/ankle overall, but making me focus more on stretching?  I do feel the morning twang, but it's not painful, it's more like "ouch", then it gets walked out and I feel okay (I do flex it a bit before I get out of bed).  I'm happy that running doesn't seem to be making it worse.  Oh and I'm also off all meds.  The prescription antiinflammitories (sp?) were just not making me feel very good overall.  I feel much better, more alert/alive with being off of them.  They were also starting to hurt my stomach when I took them..even if I took them with a meal.  So, I took a course, but I guess my body just said, "enough".  I'm trying to just manage without anything.  It's not perfect, but it's not terrible either.

So, that's my story for the week.  Today is rest day for me.  I run in my 5K in the morning.  I'm excited!  I'm now on track for my plan to run one every month!

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Jill - Glad to see your PF is doing better. Like you my PF does much better the more miles I put on. Unfortunately I notice it much more this week. I have not been unable to run due to my ankle and my PF has been much worse. I am dying here and need to be back in running shoes soon. I am so jealous of you people who are not injured!!!

I hate to rant and complain but this is my first injury since running. In the past if I started exercising all I took was one missed work out and I come up with 1,000 excuses why I can not exercise. Now it is different, I am a runner and what I do is run. It kills me for every day I miss a run. I will be trying to run again tomorrow and I will schedule enough time to do a 6 miler, unfortunately I have also schedule a route where at any time I can within a 1/2 mile call it quits and go home. I will report later on how it goes fellow runners. Wish me well.....

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

I have a raging head cold so didn't run yesterday but did today.  I still feel just awful, but I've always heard the rule of thumb that if it's above the neck, it's okay to go, if it's below the neck (fever, chills etc) you shouldn't run.  I must say it was an out-of-body experience.  I made it through 3 miles and they didn't seem too hard, but I also don't remember them very well!  Like Michael, the pre-running me would have thought "cold?  no way am I doing anything!" but even though my head said no, my body said yes!

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

HHHEEEELLLOOOOO!!!

Okay, am I pumped or what????  I ran in my second 5K of the year!  I promised myself I'd run one a month after my C25K grad.  I began the race WAY too fast.  DUR!  I just felt so good.  Then I was like, OHHHH my HR is way too high.  LOL  Then I thought, heck, I don't train like this, it's a race, let's push the limits!

I am very excited to say my "official" time was 31:03.  BUT it was not a start/finish chip race, it was only a finish chip race.  I was about 1/2 way back in the pack, so it took about 10 seconds or so (from memory) to get to the start line.  I mean at the 1 mile marker I looked at my watch which I tried to start right at the start line, and it read 9:- - something.  I was like, "NO WAY!".  haha

So I figure my "net" race was more like 30:5-something.  NOT BAD for this lady who is still 70lbs overweight!  No way in heck do I train at that pace, but I'll take it for a race!  I swear I thought I would die the last mile.  LOL  I wanted to walk so bad!  After each turn I was like, "****, where's the finish line?".  I finished 18/37 for my age bracket and 115/240 for the race.  I would love to eventually be in the top of my age bracket.  I mean once this 70lbs if off???  I will be light as a feather!  LOL

Anyhow, just wanted to come in and tell you my awesome day!  So, today was my "Sunday" run and tomorrow (Sunday), I'll just cross train.  My daughter and I are going hiking for a nice mother-daughter time out.

Have a great weekend!

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hey all!

Well, I'm proud to say that I FINISHED HHST today! At the same time, I'm starting my next phase: half marathon training, as of tomorrow. The NYC half is exactly 3 months from today, and I've entered the lottery. I hope like heck I get in! Anyway, I just wanted to pop in one last time and thank you all so much for your support. Good luck with your running and I'll see you all around the forums.

Take care,

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Congrats NYC - I am sure you are very proud of yourself, you should be. Please don't feel you are a person without a home here and I really do hope to see you post often. There are always people starting C25K and striving to do what we all did in that program. I hope people realize that sub groups like 1/2 marathon training and The Long Haul are not exclusive and are not closed to new folks. All are welcome. The Long Haul started as a C25K group but has grown, I am not a member of the original group. Check us out, we are slightly dysfunctional but get along fine. We are just runners in it for"The Long Haul". Perhaps start your own group of HHST graduates?

Jcrule great job on the race. Although your speed is so much better than mine that I'm a bit miffed. Just kidding! You really did what the experts say to do.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Thanks Patty!  Seriously, I have no idea where the speed came from.  I just finished my first run (1.5M) of Week 2 and it sucked and I was only going 5.0mph on the TM.  Sigh.  I don't push myself as much during my regular running weeks so I don't get hurt.  I just try to work on endurance.

I'm excited to have a full week under my belt.  It feels great!  I followed the plan, and only switched up the weekend days.  I was going to bag today's run, but I thought, "If I ditch this run, when's the next one I will ditch?"  So I got my but on the TM after I put the kids to bed.  I know that's why the run was hard, I was just plain tired from the day, you know?

Can I possibly say I'm looking forward to my 3 mile run tomorrow?  I'm starting to like this running thing.  I will be happy when I can run in a Zen like state though.  I'm not there yet.
