Re: Is there a doctor in the house?
The right prosthesis will get you DQed from the Olympic Trials, though...........Sounds like the tingle may well be a separate issue OR you may be shifting impact over the nerve to avoid irritating the calf. I ignored (sort of) similar calf pain once and finally tore the inner part of my soleus muscle; rest and cross training and a real medical evaluation would all be smarter, although less likely to get you the mother of all bruises..........

Re: Is there a doctor in the house?
Let me get my boots on first....Okay...got'm on.
First of all, you just ran a marathon...26.2 miles and generally, you will have aches and pains. If you had aches and pains before the marathon, then the marathon will increase those aches and pains.
There are some differences from shin splints and stress fractures and shin splints can turn into stress fractures but the treatment is the same...NSAIDs, ice and rest of the effected part. With shin splits, the pain goes away after running 2-3 miles where stress fractures the pain increases as the running progresses. Also there will be point tenderness at the spot...meaning when you put your finger on it...it will be painful. The pain radiating usually indicates nerve or tendon/ligament.
I had lots of shin problems when I started running longer distances that just kept getting worse and I kept running on it thinking it would eventually go away. I finally just stopped running for 5-6 weeks and just swam, walked, biked and use the elliptical. After about 5 and half weeks, I gradually worked my running back into my training and everything has been fine since then.
Give it a couple of days rest...go ahead and walk, swim...NSAIDs (drugs with aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen...not Tylenol) and ice will help. If it doesn't seem to improve go see your marathon running doctor for his diagnosis and recomendations.

Re: Is there a doctor in the house?
Thank you, Dr. Charlie! Sounds like sound advice. As hard as this will be, I'm not going to run for a week, just walk and stretch and ibuprofen and ice, and see how it is from there. If it's still bad, I'll make an appointment.
You're so right, I have to keep reminding myself I ran two marathons in 20 days. And wonder why things that hurt a little before are hurting more now. I'm off for a two-mile walk!

Nita, take it easy! After two marathons and some pretty intense training to get your 4:10, you need to relax and recover. Let's just hope it's fatigue and shin splints. RICE that puppy.

Re: Is there a doctor in the house?
Thanks, Jer. The more I'm reading, the more I'm thinking it is just a weird shin splint because the pain does not get worse the longer I run; it gets better. Temporarily anyway. I'm going to go look for a bike this weekend and walk a lot (which doesn't hurt). I think my brain needs a break anyway. I keep looking out my office window at the road. I think I have an addiction. Don't we all? This is going to be a long week.

*Hey Nita, there's a really good bike shop in Richardson, but I can't think of the name of it. They even have some really good refurbished bikes there...depending on how much you want to spend I bought my mountain bike for a very pretty penny about 5 years ago and it still works great for me. :)*
Except that it has wheels. . .

Do you ever get it off the stationary trainer? Sorry... sorry... couldn't resist! (Mainly because I have a stationary trainer and feel pretty safe on that.)

Re: Is there a doctor in the house?
Precisely! Others have caught clothing in moving parts. One poor dude's own dog got so startled by the new device that he bit his human hard enough to leave tooth marks but with nothing worse......
