May 1, 2008 10:45 AMWelcome new people!I've noticed a couple new folks on the message board recently and I know it can be hard to get a word in edgewise around here. Introduce yourselves, if you're so inclined. We'd love to meet you! (And don't you old-timers hijack this! Give the new folks a chance!
Re: Welcome new people!
Hi everybody, I'm Jay and I'm a running addict. I don't plan to run in the MCM anytime soon, but I found this forum to be the most friendly and entertaining here on active.com so I crashed the party. I am a high school science teacher working with students with severe emotional disabilities at a residential treatment facility in Maryland but my "real" job is that of father and husband. My main running goal right now is the Maryland Double: the Frederick Marathon this Sunday and then the Baltimore Marathon in October. If you care, you can read my blog at http://community.active.com/blogs/jaysilvio (I love to get comments!)

Re: Welcome new people!
Los Angeles resident. Started running about 3 years ago, only after suffering a really bad tibia/fibula fracture. (Wound up with a pin in my ankle and a steel plate affixed to my left tibia.) Also started running because I was north of 40 and not getting in better shape by sitting on the couch.
I run 3-4 times per week now, 4 to 6 miles each time. I run 10K's perhaps 1x per month. Did Phoenix 1/2 marathon. Learned of the event through TNT. Wife's friend told her about the TNT routine. Wife does not run - signed on to walk the race. I had fallen off in terms of running and was going maybe 1x per week, if that, when wife said, "How about a 1/2 marathon?" Uhh, yeah, how about not? But she shamed me into it. The coaches and other runners were just what I needed. I started running at least 2x per week, and more often 3x per week. I ran the event, but not with the TNT sponsors and group, as wife and I learned that fundraising involving spouses does not work - we know the same people. (Wife contacted my dad first and got $$ from him!). I was not going to be able to make the fundraising goal and had to back out of the TNT involvement, but joined wife for the race. Now, I run 3x and sometimes 4x per week. My aching feet and ankles need some time off - I cannot run every day like some people (you know who you are!). And one secret about me - I am a big time Steelers fan. Nobody would have known that, had I not mentioned it. I like this web site and message board for moral support and inspiration. I'll read about those who are training for a marathon, just ran a marathon, etc., and I figure, "what the heck, I should get off my butt and do something." So, I'll go for a run. Enjoy reading about those who have taken up running later in life. I wish I had started running 25 years ago. But what the heck - I am running now and I enjoy it. A lot. Except, of course, for the soreness with running longer distances (7 miles, for me). Don't laugh - if you had told my friends and co-workers 20 years ago that I would be running more than a block, they would have laughed at you. Led by me, of course.

Welcome aboard!
It's OK if you're a steeler fan. You can ride in back with the Giants, Redskins, and Eagles fans while us Cowboy fans drive this bus. You'll find plenty of inspiration and humor here and occasionally we go off tangent from the main discussion. But only occasionally. Like every other post.

Go Steelers!! One of my running routes goes right by Coach Tomlin's house... I secretly wish to run into him, which is completely unlikely since I most often run by his place on Sundays!! On our old board (not hosted by Active) someone had three screen name Jerome Bettis... awesome. And one secret about me - I am a big time Steelers fan. Nobody would have known that, had I not mentioned it. And, you may appreciate that last year I was in the last two miles of an 18 mile run and I ran through Bloomfield and a bunch of people were waiting for a bus to go downtown to see a game and I yelled "GO STEELERS" and they started cheering like maniacs and I pretended they were cheering for me to get me through those last hard miles!! |
