Re: This week's races

Best of luck to everyone running this weekend!  I was just trying to go over in my head who was running what this morning, and here it is!  Immer, don't fly off with that pig!  Be sure and update us on your results when you get a chance.  Ron, have a great time pacing your wife!  That would be the coolest!  Charlie, I expect a serious sub-4 so Jerry will shut up   Kathy, Len, Karen, all you guys -- Happy Healthy Races to all!

BTW, Saturday I'll probably hit the expo sometime around 4:30. My daughter has a violin lesson at 3:30, and we'll head over after that. After the expo, I think we're planning on eating at Brewer's Alley on Market Street (this is the main downtown strip, Charlie). They've got a great homemade mac n cheese topped with Virginia Ham that seems like a great carbo loading option. I imagine the beer there is really good, too, but I don't happen to drink.

Our plans changed already!  We'll probably do the expo BEFORE my daughter's lesson, so like from 2 to 3pm.  Then we'll to Brewer's Alley after the lesson around 4:30.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and weather reports!  (But Craig, Mrs. Ron might get you slapped!  At least make it Ms Ron!)  And good luck to everyone else running this weekend, even where the pigs fly!

Charlie and Jay - hope I get to meet you guys at the race.  If you hear someone near the finish tell you to "Suck it up!" you'll know it's me!  (Jay, a little background:  this goes a ways back, but Jerry and others lived by the Suck it Up! motto for the MCM - to the extent that many of them were running with actual straws on them so that other forum members might recognize them)

Most of the beers at Brewer's are fantastic, but I'm not a big fan of drinking the day before a race.  I'll probably try and hit the expo around 11:30 (early, but not right when it opens) so that I can have all afternoon to loaf around the house.  And I really do hope to hear, "Suck it up!" when I'm finishing up.  I'll be number 914!

Many thanks!  Here's to a fun and (reasonably) safe weekend for all!  Anyone who knows how to drop pollen counts through race time without dangerous atmospheric effects is hereby invited to work said wonders!

Its so nice you all are so supportive of everyone- any suggestions on what to wear for a rainy half are welcome.

Hi Kathy. The hour-by-hour forecast is just reaching race time. It looks like mid-50's and 50/50 on "scattered thunderstorms", although in the mid-50's, I'm not real worried about lightning. I'll be wearing black shorts and a short-sleeve tech shirt during the race (maybe black Arizona?), with the only real concession to the rain being the possibility of a (throw-away) running cap. Both times I've run it, they've given a running cap at the expo (mine from last year is now somewhere in Nashville). Before the race, I'll be wearing sweats and an orange windbreaker-type jacket, maybe wearing running gloves and/or carrying a cheap umbrella. If it's raining before the start, I'd expect the inside of the hotel to be extra crowded. For after the race, I'm bringing a dry shirt and keeping dry socks and cheap sneakers in the car. I'll change into the sweats, dry shirt, and jacket after the race. If you couldn't tell, I'm using this as my checklist, but hopefully it helps you too. Good luck, maybe I'll see you there!

Re: This week's races

Also, the best tip I ever got was from Jimmy last weekend (even though he didn't follow his own advice). Get the very small trash-can liners and tie them over your shoes if it's raining before the marathon. I left mine on until right before the race started, when the rain was about stopped, and I was the only one of the gang with nice cushy soft dry socks and shoes It sure was nice. I HATE running with wet feet.

Wal-Mart type bags work too. But I just took the liners out of the hotel room trash cans before we left

OK, boys and girls, we have the weather forecast for this week's races:

Cincinnati where pigs fly!

Sunday morning, low of 50, high of 63, mostly cloudy. PERFECT.

Frederick:

Sunday morning: low of 56, high of 75, 30% chance of showwers: GOOD POTENTIAL

Orlando:

Sunday morning: low of 69, high of 88, 40% of scattered thunderstorms: FREAKIN' FLORIDA

Philadelphia:

Sunday morning: low of 53, high of 72, 40% of thunder showers: GOOD POTENTIAL

Long Branch, NJ:

Sunday morning: low of 50, high of 62, 40% of thunder showers: GOOD POTENTIAL

Good luck to Craig, Kathy, Ron, Charlie, Len, Immer, Karen, and Jay this weekend. I may not be able to run but you can bet I'll be trying to capture their real-time results! PR's all around.

The only good news for me is that the race starts at 6:15. I'll be finished well before it hits 88 degrees. The bad news is that the race starts at 6:15 !!

Wow, I get to sleep in compared to you.  Frederick doesn't start until 6:30.  I think I'm going to set my alarm for 3:30 in order to make sure I can have a decent breakfast and give my body time to stretch out.

Re: This week's races

The problem with Broad Street is not that it starts early (8:30) but that you park near the finish and take the subway to the start.  So I need to be on the subway around 7:00.  That means getting there about 6:30 to allow time for traffic (something like CMM last week) and parking and walking to the subway station with several thousand of my friends..

Re: This week's races

I'm not running a race, just going on a training run. But my 11 year old daughter and 10 year old son are running the the Fredericksburg Great Train Race.  It is a mile race for kids with heats every 15 minutes starting at 7:30AM going until 11AM, with the Caboose Run (1/4 mile) for kids under 5 at the end.  This is one of the largest kids races around, with something like 5000 kids participating.  It is a fun event not only for the kids but for spectators also.

Thanks for the advice- i will bring the shoe covers, and I always wear a cap of some sort. The weather does look a lot better than originally forcast. Good luck to everyone running this weekend. Sunday should be a fun day of posting after everyone is done.

Re: This week's races

I wanted to thank everyone for their well wishes...You too Jerry!

I sweat a lot so I don't mind getting wet but I dislike running in wet socks and shoes.  So for CMM I only had one bag with me and my shoes were more important than anything else getting wet, so where ever I stood waiting, I put the plastic bag over my shoes.  The lady I ran with had a good tip.  She buys a cheap umbrella from the Dollar store and when the race is ready to start she just hands it to a volunteer or spectator to have and use.  A good investment of a dollar.

Have a great race this weekend everyone!
