Re: calf pain

I do know that running off of your toes as it is called can cause quite a bit of calf pain. As well as cause shin splints. I was having trouble with the same thing. I went to The Human Race in Valpo and tried there aertrex system. The machine told me what was wrong and what orthotic to use. It has done wonders for me. Ran indy mini and palos hieghts this past weekend without any calf pain. The wonders of technology to help out with runing can do wonders for you. Instead of paying 400 for a good orthotic I paid 65 for the #1 rated athletic ortho and it has cured my calf pain. There is also a store in Orland Park with the same setup. I would try them out to see if this helps you. It made me start using my heal more to run on and kept me off of my toes so much.

Hope this can help you out.

Albert

Re: calf pain
Thank you Albert, I would love to try this but I live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Had to go to riding a bike and walking. I want to run so bad. Not so sure I run on my toes but I will pay attention to this the next time I run. I consider myself a heel striker and also supinate. I guess old age is catching up with me. At 55 this is 1st time I have had anything like this happen (after 3 marathons and lots of running). Maybe it will get better if I ride the bike long enough. I miss running.

Re: calf pain

Oooops I spelled it wrong. It is aetrex. There are dealers all over the states. Here is a link to finding a dealer near you. http://www.aetrex.com/html/dealers.shtml Hopefully you will have one close to you. I myself consider myself a heal striker. I am 39 this month and still run like a sprinter. Getting back into running after 20 years away. Mountain bike racing kept me in good shape. I give credit to my so-called perfect stride ( from others who run with me) to riding my bike and now use it to cross train. after only 4 months of running I ran a half at 1:40;43 yesterday. Absolutely no calf pain!!!!!!!! Hope you find something that will work for you.

Re: calf pain
I had the same issue, and I ended up with achilles tendonitis. I would get a foam roller, about $20.00 and a good stretching book. Roll the calfs then do stretching. The rolling will work the knots out, (it is very uncomfortable at first), but well worth it.

If you can afford it, see an athletic chiropractor, they do more than "snap you back in place". The offer stretching, heat and adjustments.

Re: calf pain

Several years ago I experienced the same thing. At almost exactly two miles into a run my calves would cramp and it was if I pulled a muscle. I rested, stretched more, warmed up longer and still either one or both would go at the same distance. I ended up being diagnosed with Compartment Syndrome and had surgery on both calves. The surgery was not a complete success as I still live with this today. I would suggest that you talk to a sports med doctor to find out for sure.
