Coach Kat needs your help!

As part of GOTR the girls do a community service project. They voted to do cards and little packages for soldiers and on Monday we're going to vote on where to send their package to based on listing from Any Soldier. I told them that I would find them stories about military people who run... I was thinking of things like the satellite MCM they do in Iraq. Or, I just flipped through last year's race book and there was a story of someone who ran the marathon to raise money for her husband who was injured. Does anyone know of any other motivitional military running stories that I can share with them? Since they're young (8-11) things that are relatively accessible for them would be great. Thanks :)

How about the story of Major Megan McClung?

Not quite sure if this fits but the 5-miler I ran in February (Ambler Area Running Club, Frostbite 5-Miler) had an Iraq contingent running. Interestingly enough, they don't make a big thing of it on the race webpage, just in the results where there is a flag next to the names of those finishers. http://www.aarclub.com/Frostbite08/Results/OVERALL.htm

Major McClung was the person who really pushed for the MCM Forward- I was really shocked she wasnt included in the hall of fame for the mcm this year. She ran the mcm forward in 2006 and then was killed shortly after. From what I read she was a fantastic person and athlete- perfect for the gotr to learn about, but her death may be upsetting to that age group- then again today everything is upsetting but reallity.

I'm 95% certain her name is etched in one of the stones at the Marine Corps Museum near Quantico MCB. As I was walking by it just stuck out. . . can't remember any of the other names.

And I'll throw a plug in here for the MC Museum . . . if you're in the AREA for the MCM and have a car, take the drive south to Prince William County and go see the MC Museum. It is absolutely amazing. In my opinion, it makes many of the Smithsonian's look dated -- and I enjoy them! The grounds and the interior are just superbly thought out.

Jerry is absolutely correct. The buildings design is based on the now famous picture of the flag raising. Might I add as well that there is a somewhat over priced place to eat lunch in side as well as a traditional chow hall type dining experience. Now the rest of the historical part inside is very realistic and a true representation of the Marines place throughout the history of America. I would also suggest following a guide through the museum. They give that added benefit of history that will at times make you look in amazement. It is well worth the trip if you are already in the area.

Last year I went the day before the Richmond Marathon (November 10th) and took the tour followed by 26.2 miles of running on the Marine Corps birthday. I then had some beers and food with friends. I followed it up by celebrating the Marines birthday with other Jarheads. When it was all said and done I traveled up to the Iwo Jima Memorial and sat in a somber mood watching as vets from around the world came to visit the memorial on the night of our birthday celebration. Marines in uniform, bikers wearing their colors, old hats wearing their Marine Corps affiliation proudly on their chest. To see so many grown men sit in awe of what we stand for was truly a treat. I then went to visit the Lincoln Memorial and to read the Gettysburg Address. I wish we still had a guy like that in our presence. The Vietnam Memorial was in full swing with groups coming to memorialize their fallen brothers from the war. I sat there until at least 2 in the morning watching passers-by and reflecting. I then went to see the WWII Memorial which at night is just untouchable. And as I walked off I passed the Washington Monument where a group had placed hundreds of American flags for viewing and was able to look back over my shoulder knowing that America is the best place to live in the world.

Sorry for my tangent but I simply started typing and out it came.

Jerry was part of that day and it was a great day. It was long and tiring but very much worth it in the end!

Kat in the real runner's section of Runner's World last month there was a samll article about a LT that was blinded by an IED who finished a marathon in just over 4 hours and qualified to run Boston in the blind guy division! I have it and can send it to you if you don't. Let me know.
