My new 405 ROCKS!

Just gave my new Garmin 405 (Mother's Day gift) its inaugural run. I love it!! Compared to my old 305, it did much better with reception in the woods. It is a bit larger than I expected but the new design fits my wrist better. No bruised wrist bone! And, I was happy to see that I am not as slow and sluggish as I was imagining. My husband knows me very well...a new techy GPS sport watch makes me feel loved and appreciated!

I am so jealous. The weather was too bad for me to go running (basically cuz I didn't have the right clothes)

Re: My new 405 ROCKS!
Very cool, Jen! Improved GPS reception is one of the things that could actually make me consider switching in the future. My 205 rarely has issues around here, but take it on a road trip and I swear it gets homesick ("that's not my satellite, where's my satellite??" :( ) . Another major stumbling block which seems specific to mine, battery life; I'm just not confident that it'll make a full marathon without the "low battery" warning showing up. I'd be curious to hear how your 405 battery performs after some time passes. I tried playing with a 405 at CMM but didn't find the space age controls immediately intuitive; then again, I'm quite capable of being dense. Do you find it easy to use?

They had a display at the CMM. The guy told me that the differences were size (and that doesn't really matter) and that the 405 cannot switch from biking mode to running mode during the same workout. In other words you wouldn't want it for a triatholon.

Re: My new 405 ROCKS!
BTW, belated happy mommy's day.

I've had my 205 since October. I love it and I'm happy w/the training software. I am aware that some folks prefer "Sports Tracks" which can be found here: http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/. I don't recall why I did not like the software but the mapping is very good. Maybe when I hit a milestone like 1,000 miles for the year I'll switch.

Back in November I ran into software issues. My laptop does acknowledge the equipment is attached since it automatically opens the training center. But then I got a message reading "There was a problem connecting with your device. Please make sure it is connected to the computer, then try again." Ok, I've tried. And tried. And tried again. And rebooted. And tried. http://www.realbuzz.com/images/smilies/icon_cry.gif I even uninstalled the software, ran my diagnostics and cleared up the PC clutter, reinstalled; rebooted and still --- the same frigg'n annoying response! Finally - after all else failed, being a guy, I called tech support. It was something like press 2 for customer service and then press 2 for fitness equipment followed by a voice. No hold. No machine. No "log onto the web at www.customersannoyus.com" - live person. He walked me through the update process and the tool has been golden ever since.

I used my 205 for the Big Sur Marathon 2 weeks ago and kept it on after the race as well. I think I had it on for about 7 hours by the time I ran/finished/drank beer/ate/drank beer/returned to Monterey/drank beer. Good grief, I could have run into rehab, but I digress...

I love my Garmin - and I'm jealous of the 405. Garmin is a good company and I look forward to hearing your feedback.

Some MAC users use this program. Ascent - http://www.montebellosoftware.com/.

Re: My new 405 ROCKS!
Congrats on your new toy, Jen! I'm kind of jealous. Not because I think the 405 is better but because it's a new gadget and I don't have it. :)

How do you like the display? Better or worse than the 305? What about the fields? How many can you display on the screen? Did you get the heart rate monitor option? And just what is that touch sensitive dial all about? Have you tried that with sweaty hands?

As for battery life, I've never had a problem with my 305. Usually it lasts for 10+ hours. And so far, I've been able to finish my marathons, my post-race beer, and my drive home in that time. Sometimes two beers. :)

They sort of market the 405 as something you can "wear to work" and then go out and use it on your run/workout. I'd be curious to see how long the battery lasts.

Also, doesn't it use some kind of infrared or bluetooth sync?

Re: My new 405 ROCKS!
The Garmin rep at CMM said the 405 was already out, availability varied by store. That was late April.

Re: My new 405 ROCKS!
Jen, the .tcx file is a training center xml file. It's basically the history from the Training Center software. I back my data up pretty frequently by selecting File | Export History. I started working on a computer program to "process" these files and present them in a nicer format but ended up using Sport Tracks quite a bit.

Re: My new 405 ROCKS!
Jen, it appears you still have to upload to the PC, locate the .tcx file and move it to the Mac using Parallels, then import it into Ascent.
