May 12, 2008 3:37 PMMy new 405 ROCKS!
Just gave my new Garmin 405 (Mother's Day gift) its inaugural run. I love it!! Compared to my old 305, it did much better with reception in the woods. It is a bit larger than I expected but the new design fits my wrist better. No bruised wrist bone! And, I was happy to see that I am not as slow and sluggish as I was imagining. My husband knows me very well...a new techy GPS sport watch makes me feel loved and appreciated!
Very cool, Jen! Improved GPS reception is one of the things that could actually make me consider switching in the future. My 205 rarely has issues around here, but take it on a road trip and I swear it gets homesick ("that's not my satellite, where's my satellite??"

I have experience with my 305 and briefly scanned through the manual. I figured out the basics pretty quickly.

BTW, belated happy mommy's day.
I've had my 205 since October. I love it and I'm happy w/the training software. I am aware that some folks prefer "Sports Tracks" which can be found here: http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/. I don't recall why I did not like the software but the mapping is very good. Maybe when I hit a milestone like 1,000 miles for the year I'll switch. Back in November I ran into software issues. My laptop does acknowledge the equipment is attached since it automatically opens the training center. But then I got a message reading "There was a problem connecting with your device. Please make sure it is connected to the computer, then try again." Ok, I've tried. And tried. And tried again. And rebooted. And tried. I used my 205 for the Big Sur Marathon 2 weeks ago and kept it on after the race as well. I think I had it on for about 7 hours by the time I ran/finished/drank beer/ate/drank beer/returned to Monterey/drank beer. Good grief, I could have run into rehab, but I digress... I love my Garmin - and I'm jealous of the 405. Garmin is a good company and I look forward to hearing your feedback.
Some MAC users use this program. Ascent - http://www.montebellosoftware.com/.
Re: My new 405 ROCKS!
Congrats on your new toy, Jen! I'm kind of jealous. Not because I think the 405 is better but because it's a new gadget and I don't have it.
How do you like the display? Better or worse than the 305? What about the fields? How many can you display on the screen? Did you get the heart rate monitor option? And just what is that touch sensitive dial all about? Have you tried that with sweaty hands? As for battery life, I've never had a problem with my 305. Usually it lasts for 10+ hours. And so far, I've been able to finish my marathons, my post-race beer, and my drive home in that time. Sometimes two beers. They sort of market the 405 as something you can "wear to work" and then go out and use it on your run/workout. I'd be curious to see how long the battery lasts. Also, doesn't it use some kind of infrared or bluetooth sync?

Although I do think the GPS reception might be a bit better. I'll need to do a few more runs to be sure. With my 305, I would often lose reception in the woods or running through downtown with tall buildings all around me. The new watched performed very well in the woods and with lots of clouds. How do you like the display? Better or worse than the 305? What about the fields? How many can you display on the screen? Did you get the heart rate monitor option? And just what is that touch sensitive dial all about? Have you tried that with sweaty hands? I can read the display just fine and I don't wear my glasses when I run. I have three fields displayed on my screen, but I could have four. I did get the heart rate monitor option and it works just like the 305. The dial allows you to move through menus with your finger. I did notice that I would accidentally bump it on occasion. But, I then learned that the bezel can be locked/unlocked easily. Sweaty hands don't seem to be a problem. Sometimes two beers. I'm still learning about the battery. The charger is different. It is more like a clip and easier to make a connection than the 305. I haven't figured out how to turn it off yet. When I am not using it for running, it shows the date/time like a watch. I can imagine, though, that if I cannot turn it off, I will have to charge it more frequently than I did the 305. They sort of market the 405 as something you can "wear to work" and then go out and use it on your run/workout. I'd be curious to see how long the battery lasts. I thought the 405 would be like a sports watch and I had planned to wear it around as a watch. I won't be doing that. While much smaller than the 305, I think it is still too large to wear as a watch at work or anywhere. Also, doesn't it use some kind of infrared or bluetooth sync? Yes, it uses bluetooth sync. I haven't worked on that yet because I want to see if I can set it up on my mac laptop rather than using my pc at work. I need to do a little homework on that before I try out the sync. The watch comes with what looks like a small usb thumb drive that plugs into a usb port on your computer. Presumably, this is what picks up the signal from the watch.
It seems as though there is no mac support for the new 405 at least for a few more months. I did find the following on another forurm, however, which may be a way around the issues using Ascent software for the mac... can any of you computer types decipher this for me? I have a mac with leopard, and I have the parallels software. Thanks!!
rob wrote: Just found this thread over in the SportTracks forum -- it appears that on the PC, the Forerunner 50 (or 405) + Ant Stick produce .tcx files in a certain location on the file system after they are done communicating. Of course, we'll still need that Ant Stick Mac driver from Garmin...but at least the protocol issue may be resolved, assuming they do this the same way on the Mac: reply: I moved the .tcx file from my XP machine in Parallels Desktop and copied it to my macbook Leopard desktop. Then I imported the .tcx into Ascent. It worked, no problem. So while there are some extra steps involved, if you're running Windows at all it's not too tough to keep using Ascent with your 405. For the record I merely located the .tcx file as described in the link above.
Jen, the .tcx file is a training center xml file. It's basically the history from the Training Center software. I back my data up pretty frequently by selecting File | Export History. I started working on a computer program to "process" these files and present them in a nicer format but ended up using Sport Tracks quite a bit.
