Just take one step at a time. You won't get lost, and your training should actually decrease your risk of dying in the next few years................

I am signed up.
I'm TERRIFIED. MCM will be my first marathon and I'm having nightmares about it already.
I'm hoping for 6 1/2 hours, but I really just want to finish without getting lost or dying.
Bev
Ruby, wasn't this you a couple years ago? Maybe it was somebody else. I know we had a couple last year who started off in the same boat. Unfortunately I can't go back and search on TERRIFIED. We will do our best not to let you die, and it's impossible to get lost. The worst that happens is you end up running in front of the straggler bus. Ask Holly (aka myblueeyedgirl). Bev, stick with your training plan, and stick with us. Between you, your training, and the marvelous group we have out here, you will not only finish the marathon, you will overcome your fear.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement !!
I've got three kids and two grandchildren who are looking foward to greeting me (alive) at the finish line.
I'd hate to disappoint them

That's awesome, Angela, I know you're glad. it's nice to know they would work with you on that.
Bev, don't worry yet! You have enough time to get ready. The MCM last year was my first marathon, too. I just followed the 20,000+ people in front of me that were headed to the finish line too. I didnt' get lost and neither will you. (but it is a great excuse to buy that Garmin everyone else seems to be getting!)

Re: MCM list of participants!
Bev... last year was my first marathon and I think moments of panic and "oh my god, I signed up for WHAT?!" are natural responses. I just remember looking at the schedule and thinking there was no way I'd be able to run 12, 16, 18, 20 miles. But the guys who wrote the programs are good and get thousands of people across the line (you need to FOLLOW the program, which is where many people get lost) and the guys (and gals) on this board are here for everything from logistics (how do you run in the rain/treat a blister/drink water during a race) to motivation and inspiration.
If it makes you feel any better I coach and yesterday I was telling one of my girls (she's 9 I think) about my Antarctica trip. She was like "You're going to die!" and I was like "I hope I'm not going to die! I plan to live so I can send you pictures of penguins." And she stops, thinks for a moment and goes "I like penguins. But I want you to know that if you do die, I'll come to your funeral."

Hey Bev, with the support from the people on this board, your grandchildren, children, and all your other supporters will actually see you smiling at the finish. I'm a mom and grandmother and the running of a marathon is much less terrifying than the thinking about it. You'll do great.

Finally, in the land of fast runners and Boston qualifiers, someone I can relate to. Mike here, also a first marathon and slow as Christmas.
Seriously, I've been reading this board the last few weeks and it seems like a great group. Lots of helpful advice and encouragement. We can make it!
And, seriously, what's the worst that could happen? You know, I once finished dead last in a race. It was a small town 5k that would only have had 30 or 40 people on a good day. But this day, it poured down rain. There were 9 people that showed up. Eight hard core runners and me. The police car was right behind me the entire time. But I've probably gotten more laughs out of telling that story than any other race I've ever been in. And to make it even stranger, I won my age group. So the only trophy I've ever won for running was a race where I finished dead last.
Good luck and see you in October!

Welcome aboard Mike. Lurking is OK, but it's nice to hear from you once in a while. We have a number of runners who are, how do I put this politely, not likely to qualify for Boston . . . ever. But we all talk a good game.

Come on now Len, we're all Boston material, and if not, we all wish we were. At least I wish.

hahaha, Mike
I can relate to your story. The benefits of being over 60 -- I've gotten a few of those age group awards (without even trying).
I've done alot of crazy competitions in my life, but this marathon is the only one that's given me night sweats.
Reading these MCM posts is a HUGE HELP. At least I know I'm not alone among 20,000 "4 hour" runners. I don't mind being way in the back, but I do like a little company while I'm running.

Welcome to the realm of first timers Bev and Mike! It is quite generous of you to think that this is the land of "fast runners and BQers!" Coming into this race at 39 (the oldest of my age group!) I think of myself as fairly fast and with this being my first full marathon there is no way in @#LL for me to qual for Boston. Now on the other hand, I am training hard with my running partner and she has a legit shot at making BQ in October. If I knew I had to BQ at the MCM, I would most certainly join the ranks of Bev worrying about ever seeing the light of day again!!!

Re: MCM list of participants!
Welcome Bev, Mike, Drew, and all other first timers! Remember - focus on how exciting this is and not the whole dying part!
I'm sure some of you have all ready heard this story, but I'll share it for the new guys. I ran my first marathon in Alaska in 2005. The day after I got home, I went to watch my niece's softball game at the Little League park. It was four days after the marathon. As I started to walk up towards the field, my niece broke away from the rest of her teammates, charged straight for me, threw her arms around my legs, and started yelling, "Aunt Lauren! Aunt Lauren! You didn't drop dead!" Needless to say, I had a few choice words to share with my sister (her mother).

No worries there are several back of the packers on this board you can relate to. I signed up for MCM last year having only run 5 miles once in my life and I didn't run on a regular basis. I followed my training and lurked on this board for a long time and I did finish (in 6 hrs and 30 min)! Stick with the training and your confidence will build as you complete those runs! You'll find this board is full of people at different paces, experiences, etc.

Re: MCM list of participants!
Laura (Tekno) is right. There is a huge mix of folks here. All different ages and abilities and experience levels. Some have run so many marathons they've changed their name to Charlie (ooops... sorry Charlie) and others are still trying to prove they're immortal (Jimmy) while many of the rest of us are playing catch up to them with just a marathon or two under their belts. But this is the MCM and there will be a ton of first-timers and that's what makes this forum so good. Many of us here today were first-timers last year and have stayed in touch and run races together after MCM.
Active may be our online community but running is what brings us all together. Not just for the MCM but as a class of athletes. And remember, when you get to the starting line at MCM -- you ARE a marathoner! It doesn't have to be fast or pretty, it just has to be for 26.2 miles.
And remember, when all else fails, suck it up and run!
Obsessed with running and racing. It's all about the bling, baby! Suck it up and RUN!
