Aches and pains

I am currently running with some annoying heel pain. It's inside the bottom part of the foot. It feels really stiff and hurts upon waking and walking around. It hurts when I get up after sitting down. However, it doesn't hurt once I start running.

It's normal to have aches and pains as a runner, right? My first marathon I had some issues with my hip. My second marathon, I don't think I had any pain issues. But now I'm having to deal with this heel problem.

What kind of aches and pains are you all experiencing, if any?

Shins currently wrapped and being iced. Boo X-(

Feel better, Ruby! I'm sure a guru or two on here will give you good advice :)

Allow me to be the first guru then. Could very well be planar fascitis. Underside of your foot - just in front of the heel? If so, calf stretches really work wonders for it. That may help right away.

Re: Aches and pains

I agree w/ Ron if its PF re calf stretches. Daily... perhaps 10x30seconds... once or twice daily. Or part before a run (preferably after a warm up), and part after a run.

Assuming its PF, nip it in the bud asap!.... I've been there, but have not had a problem for a while. But I know others who let it go too long, and they had to take long sabbaticals from their sport.

Other recommendations:

Ice. 10 minutes at a time. at least 1x/day. One way is to freeze a bottled water, and then roll your foot over it.

Foot Rubz Massage Ball. Inexpensive.

Make sure your running shoes do not get too many miles on them before replacing.

Make sure all your non-running shoes also have good arch support.

Some people believe in inserts. I still use them (off the shelf).

If it continues, consider seeing a podiatrist.

Re: Aches and pains

Ruby, It certainly sounds like PF, particularly that it loosens up as you use it. It should be at its worst when you get out of bed or when you get up after sitting for a while. Calf stretches will certainly help ("wall pushups"). This is supposed to work faster: http://www.ronjones.org/Coach&Train/BodyXerciseLibrary/SpecialConditions/AFootHoldThatSpursHealing.html

Additional arch support in your shoes also will help. I used an over-the-counter orthotic (Spenco I think, green cover). Of course I was dumb and didn't treat it for a couple months. Well it didn't hurt while I was running!

Re: Aches and pains

Do yourself a favor... go nutso on that stretching.

I ruptured my calf (I can never spell gastricnemius) a few years back. The leg swelled to about 4" bigger than the other. PAINFUL. The only remedy? Stretching 10 X's an hour, 10 X's a day.

As for topical treatment, I'm a big fan of Blue Emu. I'm not going into the commercial of how it has helped (hip, knee, foot and wrist though) but it works.

PLANTAR FASCITITS! YUCK!!!! make sure you stretch- i had this a few years ago and wanted to cry every morning when i would get out of bed. i bought some inserts, began stretching- esp the calf with calf raises and toe pointing and it all got better- but boy does it hurt.

Re: Aches and pains

Eww, good luck with that, I hope you are able to get rid of it ok.

I have a different kind of soreness today - I had my first session with my new personal trainer. We did mostly assessment stuff today but oh my lord I think I found some new muscles.

And after only eight minutes on the stationary hand cycle (AKA torture device) I have a brand new appriciation for the guys that use hand cycles for the marathon...

Good luck Ruby with the PF, I had it a couple of years ago and it took quite a while to get rid off. I did a lot of stretching, had a thingie to roll the foot over, and iced it. Ever since then I've been stretching religiously and so far, touch unpainted wood, it has not come back.

Re: Aches and pains
Ruby - If it is hard for you to get motivated to do stretching on your own, try a gentle yoga class!

As for me, I am ready to turn in my left leg for a new one. I'm aching from my left lower back all the way down including the hip, medial shin, ankle and foot. I'm really worried that I may not be able to do a marathon this year (signed up for Chicago) unless I can get this resolved.

Jen, you too should go see someone NOW. I want to see you in Chicago and at Disney. Good luck, this really rots.

Jen, I have to agree with Charlotte. If it doesn't start feeling better, you probably should have it checked. Here's a website you can check that may give you a better idea of what's going on. http://www.painclinic.org/treatment-exercises-hipsbuttockslegs.htm
