I get one a day from runner's world and this is todays.
"The marathon, you see, is my benchmark. It is the status symbol in my community, the running community."
* Dr. George Sheehan*
I ama fan of anyone who runs as Len will tell you. LOL We all have our favorite distance but once you run a marathon it is fun to tell the world. I challenge all to run a second one because it is so much more fun then the painful first one.

My favorites:
"The more I run, the more I want to run, and the more I live a life
conditioned and influenced and fashioned by my running. And the more I
run, the more certain I am that I am heading for my real goal: to
become the person that I am". ~George Sheehan, M.D.
I do today what you won't, so tomorrow I do what you can't.
And as far as the second marathon, that's why most of the old shoes are back, isn't it?
I do today what you won't, so tomorrow I do what you can't.

Kat,
I love both of those quotes. I have seen some good ones but that first one is very true and explains why I run. Liz always makes me go for a run when I need to really figure something out. I think that is why I had a really good, fast run yesterday. I love the evolution I call my life. Liz gets a kick out of it but also hates it because I refer to myself as the one that is constantly evolving.
As for the old shoes I am not much worried about them getting that next marathon in but am trying to motivate others to committing to a second one before they do their first one. The race is just a small part of running a marathon it is the constant state of benefitting from the training. The mental edge it gives you as well as the healthier lifestyle.

I committed to Antarctica before running my first so that I'd need to stay in the game. I didn't want to "just" run one and then bow out and have it be one of those "10 years ago I..." stories. I've never thought about it, but if I wasn't signed up for Antarctica I probably would be running at all now, let alone training for MCM. I had so many setbacks this winter, without another goal on the horizon it would have been much easier to throw in the towel.

It works. I also had my eyes on my second one before my first one. Liz asked me the other day when I thought I wouldn't run these crazy things anymore and I replied, "When all my limbs are not working anymore" Meaning that if there is a way then I will be running. I have some short term goals and some mid range goals and an overall goal of 500 before I die. I only have 490 to go. Jimmy
Another quote by a guy I admire
"If he hits you and it hurts trun around and run. Live to fight another day"
Billy Shields (My Pops)
advice given to me when I was a kid. He said there is no reason to get your butt kicked when you can regroup and fight better the next day.LOL|

Isn't that how you got your first 20 miler out of the way?
Maybe that was more of a "If you think he's gonna hit you..." ![]()

I'd love to see Lauren's quote thread from last fall somehow brought over; there were lots of fun ones and several downright inspirational.
Not from anyone in particular, but good Marine running quotes:
"I'm not slow, I'm rear security"
And my favorite artillery quote, more of an anti-running quote:
"Don't bother running, you'll just die tired!"
Chris
"Human beings are made up of flesh and blood, and a miracle fiber called courage"
George Patton
"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."
Confucius
"Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed."
Booker T. Washington
Some of the world's greatest feats were accomplished by people not smart enough to know they were impossible.
Doug Larson.
"No doubt a brain and some shoes are essential for marathon success, although if it comes down to a choice, pick the shoes. More people finish marathons with no brains than with no shoes."
from Don Kardong (1976 Olympian)
He also said sagely, "Without ice cream, there would be darkness and chaos."
