Who was it that gave us that sage advice:
"Suck it up and run!"?
I will take credit for that one. I will retell the story for those that missed it long ago. I keep a box of straws in my desk at work and when someone comes to me whining about doing whatever it they have to do I give them a straw of their choice. And when they look at me like I am crazy and ask what the straw is for I tell them it to be used to "Suck it up" and since this is a running forum (sometimes) I attached "and run" to the quote.

I'll take the credit for the actual implementation of the entire "phrase." I posted in the old forum what was on my road ID and the t-shirt that I created on Zazzle going into the MCM last year:

"Suck it up" is a pretty common military phrase that I had used back in my Army days in 86-89 and when I started running and things were especially difficult I put my mind back in the days of Basic Training and said to myself, "Suck it up and run!" I thought of the men and women who are fighting for our rights today (including our active duty Jimmy) and realized that if they can do that (even if they're on some sissy Air Force base), I can run another half mile. Or mile. Or 2 miles. Etc.
Jimmy definitely brought the straws into the equation. I never would have thought of that. Sara actually IMPLEMENTED the straws at MCM and "issued" each of us one at the restaurant the night before the race.
OK, Jimmy or Jerry, either one. I just thought it appropriately belonged under the "favorite running quotes"
My other comes from a guy at our local races whose name (I think) is Clarence. He is fast and finishes quickly but runs back to encourage everyone. As he goes by, he shouts out "Dig deep, people, you can do it, dig deep!". I often think of that phrase while I'm on those last few miles. I hope to find him after a race sometime and tell him how helpful he is.

LOL! Are you going to buy me a cane or a walker, Jimmy? You know you need to listen to your elders. ![]()
I plan on wearing the "shirt" on Sunday. It will be the first time since MCM. So if you all see a gray tech shirt with Suck it up and Run on it, that would be me. Although I'm likely to change out of it after the race. . . which I hope to be as quickly as possible, LOL!
Jerry the Elder,
You are getting the walker with the tennis balls on the back. There will be 2 squeeky wheels on the front legs. Good luck on the race. I have small town 5K in the AM. Kiddos will run a mile. Hopefully they both run faster then 9 minutes like normal.

Look here, young un....
So now I have to beat a nine minute mile so I don't get beat by your kids. . . sheesh... the pressure is on.
It's outstanding that you're getting your kids out there and runnning with you. That should reduce the number of obese kids slightly. ![]()
Today I was schooled by a 13 year old on the hockey rink. Of course, I doubt he could run a marathon but he made me look like a statue on the ice. .
Which kind of tennis balls?
