Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 18th

Hey - it's me again - man, how i missed catching up w/you guys the end of last week when I didn't have access! I also was completely by myself - didn't know anyone at the conference (MISSWENDY - I technically went to DC for a conference Thurs-Sat & then stayed over for the Sun a.m. run - tho' actually I choose to attend this conference over others due to its proximity to this race - convenient, eh?) So, it was strange not talking to anyone much...felt nice once I got used to it! LOL!

JOE - glad the knee is better!

CARA - glad you're still lovin' the garmin...

SPICEGEEK - you're still the mad workout queen, I see...good going!

RUNJR - have a great week (DD & DW too) as you prepare for your race!

KEVIN - are you resting? are you sore? How good did the race feel to you?!!?

MARY - I'm with ya on the Mystery & Masterpiece Theater...we enjoy those shows too...did you catch the Jane Austen series that was on recently?

CHUCK - glad to hear you're still doing well...how are you feeling? How's DS?? Is he settled in Seattle yet? I met some nice people from the Washington State/Oregon areas while in DC.

Okay, getting up early to meet my RB in the a.m., so I'll go get those dishes done and then its off to bed for me! I'm SO glad RB plans to meet me b/c I was tempted to skip out, if she wasn't going to be there waiting...Laurel

Laurel - I was in DC on business last week and ran the National Police Week 5k. Ran up Capitol Hill as well. Didn't run past RFK but was at RFK to cover a soccer match.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 18th

Hi all. Rest day for me today which means I cleaned a bunch of stuff that never gets clean. Im hosting the AC guy, the pool guy, the yard guy and the tree guy for extended visits this week.Sometimes I see those guys more than DH!. I need to call the bug guy because i have a mysterious infestation of ants in the kitchen. Bug guy is a big talker of politics. (ugh)

Laurel-congrats on your race. Sounds like it was a great atmosphere to run in.

Runjr-I can promise you that I wont lose too quickly. That actually made me laugh because it has taken so much work to lose the 6 that I don't think the other 6 will fall off of me!

Wendy

Be careful stretching those hammys cold....if you are doing that. I hear you on the slowing down on eating. I ate so much the first weeks that it is hard to keep up that pace. I am sitting here right now with half of my salad that I couldn't finish. It also takes me an hour to eat a darn salad! Crazy. Im gonna have to much quicker to keep this up. The good thing is that I have not been hungry for one second the whole time!

Mary

Im with Wendy on the hamburger shilelaghs. They sound so dangerously good.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 18th

Hey all,

I managed an easy 6 miles in 1hr 4mins something this morning before work. Going canoeing tonight so thought i'd get a post in at lunchtime. Not sure yet if i'll take a rest day tomorrow or Thursday... possibly tomorrow as I have to be at work earlier and am going climbing in the evening.

Laurel - Great 10k race! It sounds like you had a lot of fun - and a great time too! Looking forward to seeing those pictures! Hope you get a good run in with your RB.

Misswendy - You are right about posting being addictive... IDK - when i'm not running i'm talking about it, recruiting others into it, or posting on this forum about it. I must be a really boring person ;) Hope the hamstrings are feeling better - maybe a cutback week will help? You've certainly be piling on the miles recently!

Runjr - Good to hear you are enjoying the taper week. I'm sure it'll do you a lot of good. Not sure i'll beat my co-workers in that race... one of them has very long legs and an entry into London Marathon for next year! I don't think he runs that much at the moment though so you never know :) I just want to beat 1hr - nothing more!!! Oh - and not burn out by mile 2 would be nice! Did you decide on which shoes to wear in the end?

Mary - Did you get that long run in? It sounds like DH is doing really well... do you run together or separately?

Chuck - How you doing out there? Did I hear you made 30 days? Congratulations! We're very proud of you too and what you are doing. Stick with it!

GLBryan - You say you ran a 5K - how did you do in it?

Andahuff - That rest day sounds like cross training to me ;) All those men at your house too! EC report?

Spicegeek - Sounds like EC's client was a little jealous of your ability! Hope you're hip is doing better. Icing it sounds like a good plan - if you go for the painkillers, make sure you don't run on them as you don't want more injury... still i'm sure you know that better than me anyway ;)

Macd - That speed workout that DD did sounds amazing! I wish I could do that, but it's just not going to happen. I'm still waiting for that magic moment where i'll just get faster somehow, but I just don't think i'm built for speed. Why is it my female friends of my age can run a HM in 1:40 ish... And more to the point, how can I do that ;) Great to hear that you've been able to run! How'd the PT appointment go?

Joe - How are the runs coming along? Is that knee still feeling good? Just seen you've snuck a post in... If the knee is still not right you should go back and get that MRI ASAP. The sooner you know what's going on, the sooner you can get the right treatment and recover and the less damage you do.

Kevin - Hope you're recovering well... Still awaiting your magic go faster tips ;)

Well... I think i'm all caught up so i'd better get back to work.
Chat tomorrow

5k went pretty well. My 11 year old daughter ran it with me which cost me a couple minutes time wise but I was pleased overall.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 18th

Good morning everyone! Wow did yesterday's rest day feel good. I'm ‘all rarin to go'. Well actually my resting HR is still high (63bpm), but my legs feel good. Coach gave me this weeks schedule. All real short easy runs except for Sunday (8 miles-EASY). 15-20 min easy tonight.

Macd019, I thought of you during mile 12. You were really my inspiration, how you've come back from your injury is really great! I'm so hoping you get good news at PT today. Take it easy at the appt, and don't ‘sprint' right off the TM. LOL

Joe, yeah I took a short nap (about 20 min) and got out of my recliner and ouch! Was I stiff. OK so there was no more sittin around yesterday. I found the more I moved around the better my legs felt.

Misswendy, Good job on the 6.3 miles yesterday. I hope your hamstrings loosen up. If you've just started running everyday, maybe you are just ‘over-trained' just a little. Slow your pace up and you should be fine. Do you check your resting HR everyday? A possible sign of over-training is an increased resting HR. I got as much cleaned as I could stand. I detest housework, and when I let it slide it gets really overwhelming.

Runjr, You'll do great this weekend! My.02 cents; run your own pace. Good luck on your 40 min run today.

Spicegeek, Great workout yesterday. Too bad about your hip. I hope the ice/meds combo works.

Cara, WooHoo! Great intervals! Take it easy on the 6 miles today. I'll be happy to ‘share the secrets' although I won't be surprised if they include a LOT of easy runs. After reading his book, I'm sure I'll be re-starting an aerobic phase of training for 1-1/2 to 2 months of miles building. Then another 1-1/2-2 months of strength and intervals. Followed by about 2-3 weeks of anaerobic interval training, and then 2-3 weeks of tapering. That's what I'm expecting, but he's the coach. Great job on the 6 miles! Ha! Magic go faster tips. I like that, you're so funny!

Laurel, What a great race! Excellent time too! I'm so glad you had a good time. Yes, DD's are sweet (you're right, most of the time they're sweet). They've also been real good at giving me my time for running. Even though as teenagers they are not sacrificing much at 4am. LOL Was yesterday a rest day? The race felt very good to me. I'm surprised by how quickly I've recovered. I was sore/stiff Sunday afternoon, a little less yesterday, and today I feel normal (however normal that is LOL). Take it easy on the run today!

Mary, nice job on the 8 mile run! I've got one of those on Sunday.

Andahuff, I hope you enjoyed your ‘rest day' yesterday.

Joe, nice job on the 20 min TM run. Maybe the knee needs some ice?

GLBryan, Congrats on your 5k! Good for you running with DD. I'm sure she enjoyed that time with you.

Well I gotta get back to work. Good luck to everyone on your runs today!

Kevin

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 18th

hey yall

hope your weather is as beautiful as ours. its already 80. its 11:19am, and i mention that only b/c i can never tell what time yall post b/c the time on this website is weird. i ran 6m in 1:03. i did the long hill route. i think a few less miles this week and another couple days of a little yoga and i will have loose hamstrings again. thanks for all the great advice!

marflair....great 8m in the nice weather.

runjr...sounds like y our race will be more comfortable than the last one weather wise. good job on the relaxing situps and pushups. lol

lspence....way to sneak in a run after your conference. how is your RB?

glbryan....how exciting to run in DC, and how nice to run with your DD! great time, too!

andahuff...you sure have a lot of guys...i'm still trying to balance the good food with the amount of calories per day. sneaking in a lot of useless snacks, i guess. i'm not really hungry either, i just like to eat. i normally stretch after run so is that ok?

joe...sorry you could feel your knee. and i am hoping your day is not still 'looming' ahead of you! awww! hope you are still smiling.

chamblin....was thinking of a cutback, but i'm not sure. that is probably wise, but idk. i will hopefully run a 5k sat, so maybe i will cut out the long run this week. boring? well, you seem incredibly interesting to me...!

kevee...i didnt know about the hr. i've never checked it. enjoy your slow easy week!

love to all

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 18th
Woohoo!!! Cleared to run!! At least a little. 1 mile for the first 2 runs; if those go okay, I can increase the runs by 1/2 mi/week until I hit 3 miles; no further than that until mid-July. 2-3 runs/week for the first 2 weeks, then I can go to 3-4x if I feel okay. So, if I'm starting from a base of 12mi/wk in mid-July, a fall half would not be out of the question, would it? I am pumped, but I will be going out very easy.

I also found out the therapy sessions entitle me to a free 4-week membership at the gym.

Laurel, great job on your DC race!! DD#1 lived there for 3 years, and loved running around the monuments, the mall, etc. However she also likes the reliable climate in Palo Alto ;) How was the run with your RB?

glbryan, nice race for you as well! I wouldn't mind sacrificing a little time to run with DD. Of course, in my case it's DDs that would have to sacrifice a LOT of time to run w/me! ;)

Kevin, I can't believe I could be anybody's inspiration, but thanks for thinking of me! I was thinking about you as we were driving in WI on Sat. and on Sunday--we went to an art fair in Indy and I was hoping you were having similar weather for your race. Glad your recovery is going well! So what is your next "scheduled event"? ;) Nice that you made that pic your avatar--it's really a special one.

misswendy, our weather isn't much like yours. I jogged up & down the sidewalk for the therapist--it was 52, cloudy and windy. Not bad for running but sure not great for other outdoor activities! Good 6mi hill run this morning! Hope your hamstrings loosen up soon!

andahuff, that's quite a few guys you are hosting... what will the neighbors think? jk We had ants in our kitchen (pantry closet) last year--I think it took 3 trips before the exterminator got rid of them. Hope yours vanish more quickerly!

Cara, my DD is not built like you'd think of for speed, I think she's just been working at it for a while. And you are definitely making progress in that dept, in case you hadn't noticed ;) Great job this morning! I think a rest day would be in order--climbing really isn't resting anyway.

Well, time to get back to work. Have a great afternoon/evening, all!

joe--missed your post while I was typing. I agree, maybe an MRI is in order. Hope the work doesn't keep piling up!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 18th
Hey gang! Anyone mind if I hop back into the pool? I was through here some months back, getting ready for my first HM, which was supposed to be this past January. Unfortunately a lack of resolution led that thought right down the drain. I am ready to go for the Spinx Runfest HM on 10/25/08 though...

But a little background on me... I am 1 35 y/o male, 6'0" and about 235 lbs. As recently as 2004, I weighed as much as 340 lbs. So I am definitely happy with the progress I have made to date. My ultimate weight goal is to get down in the 190-200 area, just to see what it is like on my frame. ANYWAY...

You can read more about me and what I am about on my blog... http://onestrideatatime.blogspot.com

So I am slowly working on keeping the base up right now. I have been having a NAGGING hamstring injury for the past couple of months. It has been worse, but it is slightly better now. On hills, I know it is there, I will put it that way. My goal ultimately is to be as healthy as possible for say the middle of June or early July so I can start training for my HM. Before the injury, my long runs will hill-filled 7.2 milers. So the base was there, it is just getting back to that point and staying healthy. I am leaning towards the Bingham time-based training rather than mileage based. I just think that will be better suited for the new town I am moving to in South Carolina.

So enough about me... That is where I am right now. It is good to be back here and please, feel free to chime in on anything to help me along the way... including any suggestions on the hamstring issue. Ugh...

Be well!
Dan

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 18th

I forgot to mention the most important thing: A HUGE THANK YOU to all of you on this thread who have encouraged me and put up with my whining during this injured period--I would surely have lost the motivation to get back to running without you!

Welcome (back), Dan! I can't help you on the hamstring, but congratulations on your awesome weight loss and best wishes as you pursue your goals!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 18th
hi al, I hope everyone is doing well. I ran this AM 4.25 miles. Mile 1 slow, 2-3 HM pace and last 1.25 slow. The weather was nice. It is easy to keep up with the thread again this week.

laurel - what is next for you. After another successful 10k I think maybe HM?

andahuff - my theory on the eating has been to lessen the portions at meal time and eat more often. I have had a ton of fruit and granola type bars in between meals. That has helped me quite a bit, eat less more often. Sounds like you are hosting a party with all the fix-it guys.

cara - great run again, plus canoeing is a great exercise. I like boats, however I prefer a motor attached. No shoe decision yet I will take three pairs and determine the night before. DD and DW are excited and nervous as am I. With running it all depends on how you feel the day of the race.

glbryan - great race and you got to run with DD which is awesome. I love to run with the family.

kevee - glad to hear you are ready to go again. I bet you are ready to prepare for the next challenge!

misswendy - glad to hear you are taking care of the hamstrings. Great run today and perfect weather.

joe - hope the knee thing is nothing to serious. I have some of my longer runs where my IT band starts to hurt at about 8 miles. I just push through and then when I am done the pain goes away relatively quickly.

macd - hurray!!!! That is fantastic news! I think a fall HM is possible.

dan - welcome back. Glad to see you have a race picked out already. Take your time building the base.

take care. good thing we have spell check I had a difficult time spelling today.
