GETTING TO KNOW YOU THREAD . . . PLEASE JOIN

Hello, There! Wave, wave! Care to join me on my "Getting to Know You Thread"? Feel free to answer some, all, none of the following queries:

Willow Tree's Answers:

1. Where do you run?

I run on a local "cushioned" high school track every morning after I drop off my 2 little men at pre-school. I am joined by my mother (74 years old) who walks the same distance I "run" (more like a slow motion trot, at this point, really).

2. How long have you been running?

4 Days!

3. What are your running objectives?

To become physically stronger, lose weight, make sure I don't remain behind my former grad school classmates in terms of physical fitness. I posted on my Greetings from Jersey thread furher details. Perhaps - if I can get through my first month running 6 days per week - my objectives will expand to include weighing myself, measuring myself, taking careful stock of my physical condition . . . but I'd like to prove to myself that I can stick with the regimen FIRST. Not placing the cart in front of the horse - in case I jinx myself.

4. What is your training regimen and philosophy?

I'm shooting for consistency. Hoping and praying for it fervently. That I can manage to keep this up and not flame out. I envy my now 83 year old unknown neighbor. Every morning at the crack of dawn - when I'd head out in my car for the standard 9 to 5 (well, in my industry . . . more like 16 hrs. per day, instead of 8) to beat the traffic over the bridge, I'd see him - with his laughable pom pom neon colored winter hat "trotting" round the streets of our sleepy NJ suburban town. I'd chuckle. He became a fixture of my early morning commute when I first moved to town. Thing is, though, that bouncing bobbing hat would be seen every morning. Without exception. Rain, snow, sleet. More reliable than the mail. Wiped the smug smile right off my face. Awe inspring.

5. What is your greatest fear re running?

Injury. I was extremely athletic in my youth. I know what its like to sustain a serious injury and get knocked out of the box. I aspire to NEVER feel more than transient casual "muscle burn" with my running.

6. What do you wear to run?

DMX something or other. Maybe, Nikes? Black yoga cotton pants. Tshirt. And a Lafayette College sweatshirt (nope . . . didn't go to Lafayette, BIL did, though).

7. What are your physical statistics?

150 some odd pounds - according to the Pediatrician's scale when I have to hold my youngest to get him weighed. 44 years old. 5'7''. Female. Not sure of measurements (which, frankly, is far more important than weight). Haven't taken them recently - or weighed myself either. First, gotta stick with my regimen for a month, then I'll take them, get an accurate weight (too) and post them.

8. What would you like your physical stats to be ?

I'd like to get back to 116-125 lbs. Maybe get my pre pregnancy waist back - or, at least, closer to it. Eliminate that rounded shoulder look. Basically, a return to my angular frame. Well, one can dream - at least.

9. What does your training schedule consist of?

At present: I run 1 to 1.5 miles every day inside of 1/2 an hour. With 5 - 10 minutes of stretch before/after. IF I continue, I plan to layer on more stretching and resistance training. The key, of course, is: the continue part . . . .

Re: GETTING TO KNOW YOU THREAD . . . PLEASE JOIN

Welcome Willow,

That's alot to ask about someone right off the bat.. Feels like an application.

I say that in light hearted fun. - I've been running seriously for just over a year, for many of the same reasons, Good health (lowered BP, Cholesterol, body fat..... ) , lose a few pounds (shed 50 - wow I had to change that a few times till I realized how much weighed when I started over a year ago) and out of that has come the enjoyment of running ( 5k's, half marathons and full marathons) and the community of people it brings.

Best Wishes -

Re: GETTING TO KNOW YOU THREAD . . . PLEASE JOIN
A great thread I must say original.

1. Mainly trails and paved trails through woods for bikes etc.

2. Since middle school umm, heck that's a long time ago, I'm 34 but took several years off in 20's and partied too much.

3. To stay in shape and I love being outside as of last Fall, I recently started running in fun runs, 5k's, 8k's, 10k's and have no desire as of yet for a full marathon but definately a half-marathon atleast 3 or 4 a year and of course the other smaller events and just have fun trying to win my age group.

4. I run to have fun, I use to run full speed every session and no fun, I like to switch up run 80-90% on some days and other days maybe less or more depending on how I feel. I just like enjoying the scenery and peacefullness I guess. I love meeting and seeing other runners, walkers, bikers out with same interest. Just happy I can run since I had previous injury where I took it for advantage. I want to run the rest of my life at some point or another I think if you stop moving or get lazy you just give in, just my personal opinion. Even if I was rich I'd run my butt off.

5. Already had it a few times and most recently I don't heal as quickly as I use to and thought maybe never again running, martial arts, basketball, etc. all the things I love to do in the world.

6. Brooks GTS shoes, Brooks or Nike dry-fit shirt, bball shorts and some shades or usually an mp3 player.

7. 152 5'8 muscular build for a short guy, not a six pack like old days, have an almost flat and very close to six pack, rest of upper and lower body set. (I drink beer and eat fast food, sorry)

8. I'm cool with me for now, just wish a totally flat stomach but other than that I'm cool. If I could just get rid of a pound of where I want then bam! lol.

9. First off, I don't stretch before/after anytime. I did in high school they made you. Some believe in it some don't, I don't. I run or "did" trying to build back up to it since injury (sprain torn ligaments blame roots on trail), atleast 4 or 5 times a week and usually did anywhere between 3-7 miles, but after my last post and me wanting to improve my PB runs and do a Half-marathon in decent time I hope I'm going to start including FARTLEKS and other methods of training. Willowtree I wish you all the luck and you have started on what will I hope become something you miss if you don't do it and you'll get your numbers and times you want. It's so easy to do something that you can't not do and running is a very addictive thing and you will if you haven't get the runner's high (yes it's true) and when you wanna quit so BAD and you don't then you get done, you feel like you won alot of money and your body thanks you as well. I wish you and everyone the best of luck and thanks for this thread, Great Idea!

Re: GETTING TO KNOW YOU THREAD . . . PLEASE JOIN

1. Where do you run?
I run at the gym on a treadmill, at home in the garage on a treadmill, or outdoors but only in races. Weird, but I've covered that in another thread, and I am working on my courage to run outdoors all the time.

2. How long have you been running?
3-years

3. What are your running objectives?
Lose weight for sure! I'm getting older, older runner who began running older - you get it, and proud of the fact that I can and do run 'ok'. Many of my friends don't run because of their knees. I don't know if that is an excuse, or is true. But I have no knee problems, therefore I run and I'm starting to feel special about that. I run for my 'figure' but the icing on the cake is that it affects my health. Yeah! ;)

4. What is your training regimen and philosophy?
I too am shooting for consistency. My strategy is simply to run, run a little further and a little faster as my body and mind allows. I think my body can do it, it's my mind that is giving me difficulty. LOL.

5. What is your greatest fear re running?
I'm not sure. Maybe passing out. That's tongue in cheek but I can't understand why I don't push myself harder. I CAN do better and I want to do better. On average I run a 34-minute 5K. I know I can do better but always seem overwhelmed with joy when I didn't do worse. I have ZERO running self confidence.

6. What do you wear to run?
As little as possible!! I like tight short running pants but they do creep up a slightly. I suppose one of my goals would be to have that not happen any longer. I'm loving the short running skirts (little tight shorts underneath so the creep up stuff doesn't show) and wore a M running skirt in the last 8K I ran and it was too big and kept sliding down. When I did the Coronado Bridge Run I wore a SMALL running skirt. It was perfect and comfortable. I cannot wear a big T-shirt and would NEVER wear the souvenir shirt on the run. TOOOOO much fabric. Way too much. I wear Aces running shoes.

7. What are your physical statistics?
ummmmmmmmmmmm...I am tall, long thin legs (see avatar) and carry every pound I have in my middle.

8. What would you like your physical stats to be ?
I would like to and should weight 150. I do not weight 150.

9. What does your training schedule consist of?
I was running on a self-prescribed plan of a 5K a day. I did that successfully for a several months (3) on plan B, a 5K a day no LESS than 4-days a week. I began running 5K races and have cut back on running lately. I wasn't losing any weight so I cut out wheat and oats for 2-weeks to see If I would lose. After 4-months and 10-lbs gained, I lost 9-lbs changing my eating. I didn't feel like I'd be strong enough to run because of the foods change experiment. But I did run 4-miles last weekend in 50:00 and didn't have a lot of difficulty with the race except it was uphill on a bridge (and down) and the heat that morning was excruciating. But I loved the event. My NEW training schedule will consist of 5K a day I hope starting tomorrow. This would have been tonight but it has been raining (big deal) and I got stuck on some important phone calls.

Re: GETTING TO KNOW YOU THREAD . . . PLEASE JOIN
1. Where do you run?
If I'm running during my lunch break at work, I run around the block a bunch of times (it's 0.8 miles per). On the weekends I run loops on a path at the local community college (just over a mile each). In a previous life I must have been a hamster with one of those wheels in my cage...

2. How long have you been running?
I ran from my jr. year in high school through college and into my early twenties. Then I took over ten years off. I've been back at it for a bit more than two years now.

3. What are your running objectives?
This year my goal has been to complete the Maryland Double: The Frederick and Baltimore Marathons. Next year I would like to run my first ultras (a 50K in the spring and the JFK 50 miler in the fall). In 2010 I plan to run the Boston Marathon and, since I'll be 40, I'd like to be a locally ranked Masters runner.

4. What is your training regimen and philosophy?
My philosophy is that since I'm not naturally the fastest athlete I'll need to out-train other runners. I strive to train smart and to the best of my ability given the circumstances of my daily life (including my responsibilities as a husband, father, and teacher). I believe in the benefits of cross-training and eating whole foods.

5. What is your greatest fear re running?
Not approaching my potential. I don't ever want to look back and regret what I might have accomplished.

6. What do you wear to run?
Brooks shoes, tech fabric clothing, and Body Glide.

7. What are your physical statistics?
I'm between 5' 8'' and 5' 9'' and 130-135 lbs.

8. What would you like your physical stats to be?
I'm pretty happy with where I am now.

9. What does your training schedule consist of?
A typical week might contain 4 runs (1 long 10-22 miler, 1 tempo run of 7-10 miles, and 2 easy 8 milers), 2 elliptical sessions, and 1 day of recovery spinning on my bike trainer. About 6 days a week I will also put in a couple blocks of natural resistance core and upper body work.

4 i try to run at least three times a week a couple of miles. i know i need to increase my mileage but i can come up with some of the best excuses to be a lazy runner

Re: GETTING TO KNOW YOU THREAD . . . PLEASE JOIN
Willowtree, great questions

1. I'm pretty lucky, we have a bike/running path less than half a mile from the house, I usually run at least a little bit on it. Otherwise, it's pavement and concrete. Don't know what I'll do this winter (WI winters don't mix with running) but my wife has been hinting that a treadmill isn't out of the question (she just started running, too.)
2. Used to run in high school and college, but am just getting back into it after 20 plus years. I guess I've been running a little over two months now.
3. A) Get back in shape. Too many people my age (48) and younger are in horrible shape, and I don't want to be one of them. I was also at the heaviest I've ever been B) I'm naturally competitive, so I like the idea of racing again, even if I stand little to no chance of being in the top group for a few years. C) A buddy of mine recently mentioned that he's been running for six months and is getting his three mile times down to around where he ran in high school. That impressed me.... and got me off my butt!
4. As for training, I've gotten a few training routines off of the internet (I did a 5K and am training for a 10K). I do best when I have very specific goals, I can't keep my enthusiasm going if my goal is 'lose weight' or 'get in shape'.
5. An injury that keeps me from reaching my goal. That's a hold over from my youth, I hated it when a doctor told me that I was hurt too badly to run.
6. I have to say the gear is orders of magnitude better than when I was younger. I have Asics shoes, and usually wear an UnderArmor shirt under a tee shirt (I have lumps where there used to not be any) and running shorts.
7. 165 lb, 5'8". I must hide my weight well because I wear about the same size clothes as when I weighed 125. I dropped 5 lbs the first week I started running. Haven't really checked since.
8. No jowls or love handles would be a good start. After that, I'll go for that movie star chiseled chin look . : )
9. Right now, three days a week, one short and 'fast' 2 to 2.5 miles, one decently long run (20-30 minutes) where I'm focusing on keeping a steady pace and getting to the end just about out of steam, and a long run (35-45 minutes) where I focus on how my body feels and to not stop running, if possible.

FiveK, my buddy (mentioned above) used to weigh over 270 and tried everything he could to lose weight. Nothing worked, a couple of years ago he cut out wheat and dairy and lost 60 pounds. Six months ago he started running and is now below 185 (what he weighed in the Navy!) and running 3 miles in under 22 minutes! Keep it up, for some people, the wheat is a real problem.

I'm actually faster now at 38 than I was back when I was running high school and college cross-country and track! And that's after taking a decade long break from the sport. You can do it, especially since you have that competitive streak in you.
Good luck!

Re: GETTING TO KNOW YOU THREAD . . . PLEASE JOIN
Howdy Willowtree!

1 I run on a treadmill at the gym. I live in western Michigan where the winters are not remotely runner friendly, and yes the weather has broken and it is beautiful outside but I have yet to make the transition.

2 I have been running off and on for the past 13 years, I started with my second pregnancy to help with my diabetes and was hooked.

3 My running objectives are to finish a 3 mile run before I turn 40, I was very close this winter but developed a hipflexor issue and now I feel like I am starting all over.

4 I hope to continue to be fit until the day I die. I do something every day. While rehabilitating my gimpy hip I decided to go back to my "not running today workout", so on the days I don't run I do 15minute on the bike, 15 on the elliptical and then walk hills on the treadmill for 20 minutes. I alternate weights, one day upper body, the next lower-abs everyday. I am also not aversed to busting out my step reebok tape....I have to move everyday!

5 I have no running fears...I feel like I have been through it all. Maybe it is the fear of one day saying "I used to run"

6 When I run I wear a champion bra, new balance running tights and my Aquinas Basketball Camp t-shirt, and adidas running shoes.

7 Physically, I am tall, 5'11' and mildly beefy, if I can lose 10 more pounds I will be in the healthy bmi range

8 I would like to lose that last 10 pounds, and of course that would not make me skinny but healthy, I really don't understand the current mentality of skinny, fake tanned, bleached teeth is beautiful. I think the beautiful thing about people is their flaws!

9 My training regimen is listed in #4. Unfortunately, I am so aversed to stretching. I do just the minimum to get by. My older relatives tell me often that one day I will be sorry....It is just one of those things I hate to do! I am also trying desperately to do a full body pull up....this is a tough one for girls ): Previous to the hipflexor issue, I was one week from finishing the couch to 5k.

Re: GETTING TO KNOW YOU THREAD . . . PLEASE JOIN

Hi all~ I'm relatively new to the community and thus far have liked how encouraging everyone seems to be.

Where do you run?

I run on the treadmill and I am starting to get bored with it....I want to transition to running outside but it's one of those mental blocks for me...I'm worried that I will look like I am running for my first time and/or won't even be able to run 400 yards without stopping...lol. Every time I run I run a minimum of a 5k...which takes me about 32 minutes...kinda wimpy.

How long have you been running?

I have been running since January.

What are your running objectives?

1. To make the full transition to running outside and only using the treadmill during bad weather, 2. Complete a 5k.....when I accomplish these objectives I'll shoot for bigger and better ones. :)

What is your training regimen?

Make myself get on the treadmill and run and make sure I do a 5k. Shoot for a minimum of 3 times per week. With the kids and life in general I'm typically getting on the treadmill at 8-8:30 at night.

What is your greatest fear for running?

Giving up and not letting it be a lifelong change.

What do you wear to run?

Sports bra and running shorts or a running skirt. Faves are Nike and Reebok shorts. I'm a shoe junkie and wear Nikes, New Balance, Salomon, Brooks, and Asics (I rotate them out and also wear them to work since I'm on my feet a lot).

What are your physical statistics?

5'8" and 149 lbs.

What would you like your physical stats to be?

139 lbs....I have really crappy eating habits being a nurse....due to a lack of preparation on my part I tend to grab the bad things I crave (desert at the cafeteria, etc.).

What does your training schedule consist of?

I think I already answered this....5k on the treadmill, have implemented a few 3.5 to 4 mile runs....I have started to do some hills/intervals on the treadmill.

Re: GETTING TO KNOW YOU THREAD . . . PLEASE JOIN
What a great idea this is!

1. Where do you run?
I run indoors only, so far. But I hope to make a move outdoors soon.

2. How long have you been running?
8 weeks - I'm beginning week 9 of Couch to 5K this week! Getting nervous about those three miles tomorrow night...

3. What are your running objectives?
Weight loss would be a nice bonus, but I'm looking for something I'll stay consistent with to improve my health and overall fitness. I've always fluctuated within a 15-pound range since high school - and though partly because of eating habits, I think it's mostly because I've worked out so inconsistently over the years. Plus, running makes me feel like I'm actually "doing" something; I don't get that sense of accomplishment from walking, weights, or yoga/pilates.

4. What is your training regimen and philosophy?
As mentioned above, I'm doing the Couch to 5k program. The specifics of the program has kept me focused. Beyond this week, I hope to continue running 3miles/3 times per week, but moving it outdoors. My philosophy at this point - being a beginner - is to do the minimum even when I feel I can push it a little farther. That may sound lazy, but believe me, I've been over-zealous with exercise before and I end up abandoning it.

5. What is your greatest fear re running?
Injury is always in the back of my mind.

6. What do you wear to run?
Light t-shirt, shorts, running shoes. I need to breathe!

7. What are your physical statistics?
I'm 5'3, 150 lbs (though I feel I carry it well, as that number surprises most).  I'm not large-chested, which (for the first time) feels like a blessing!

8. What would you like your physical stats to be ?
I'd like to drop 15 lbs, but I'm not running to drop weight specifically - I just want to get rooted in healthy habits and hope the weight will drop without me obsessing. Oh, and I'd like to grow a few inches taller, but I don't think running can help with that. :)

9. What does your training schedule consist of?
Right now, I'm just running three times a week. Outside of that, I've begun a light weight routine that I do twice a week.

I've enjoyed reading others' stories and hope to read more!
