Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 25th

Happy Sunday all!

chuck, I got a chuckle out of your 3 years of the same music--sounds like me! I add a song every so often, but otherwise just keep shuffling through the same ones. Sounds like your workouts are going well, and glad your contract was ratified!

misswendy, that's my kind of snake! Fortunately we don't have many up here, and most of them are garters. Nice 10 mi yesterday! Sounds like a busy day today!

Gayle, you get to test Garmins? Cool! I've been measuring my run distance w/the car, and I'm not too concerned with how far I'm actually walking right now, but I wasn't happy the Nike + was off that far. We'll see now that I've calibrated it, but I'm like you--adding a little extra just in case! A Garmin will probably top my birthday wish list (if I can wait 'til Oct lol).

joe, glad to hear your knee did okay on an outdoor run! Mine did too--I can feel the lack of cushioning where cartilage was removed, but it's not really painful. Feels good to be able to run some again, doesn't it?

I got my cross-training in moving mulch yesterday. DH got 9 yards, and I did the hosta bed and shrubs on our turnaround, and the flowers by the road. Also planted the last of my flower boxes and some pots... Today my hamstrings are sore, I think from bending to spread mulch rather than squatting, which my knee doesn't like. I was sure beat last night! There is a lot of mulch left... DH can put that where he wants it!

By now runjr should be done with his race, and maybe going back for DW and DD?

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 25th

Hey all,

I got busy at home yesterday so moved my long run to today instead. Ended up doing 8 miles with lots of hills. Amazingly I felt much stronger on the hills with my recent training and it tops the week at 29 mile which is the most i've ever done. The pains in my legs are gone and were definitely not related to running so no problems there.

Kevin - Good to see those easy runs are going well for you. Hope that hip is ok - do you have any more races planned? Golf sounds like fun... that's definitely a bonus when you've done a race... you get to do some of those other things you've not had time for ;)

Misswendy - I'm only 5'7 so no giant ;) I also have really long legs and am thin, so you'd think i'd make a good runner huh... no such luck... dodgy genes I think :D Great 10 miles... how are the hamstrings feeling? LOL on your snake... I hear those ones have a nasty bite :D

Spicegeek - Hope you don't have too much work to do tomorrow! Great photos from your race... how's the hip coming along? I'm going to try that rolling over thing as soon as i've finished this! I've no doubt your workouts are a lot of fun, but they sound like a LOT of hard work ;)

Joe - Glad you got that long run in outside! Knee pain is not a good sign though... hope it's feeling better today! Looks like a nice wood run you did? What furniture did you get?

Macd - great long run!!! How annoying about the Nike+ - hope the callibrating works... otherwise you may just have to buy a garmin :D

Runjr - Not sure if you're running right now or done or waiting to start but either way i'm thinking of you and wishing you all a great race. DH and I definitely found some hills today and I'm feeling stronger already so i'm really pleased with how the training is going. Looking forward to the race report and pictures!

Chuck - Good to hear from you! Glad you're not going on strike... LOL on the new music - what you gone for? I guess that was a list of fish you sent to spicegeek ;)

Gayle - what kind of cool job do you do to be able to test out Garmins?!? Sounds like my kind of work! So - what are your findings?

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend. Hi to Laurel, Andahuff, Stan, Toshi, Mary, Marilyn, Sheila and anyone else out there i've forgotten. I think it's intervals on the plan again for me tomorrow so will report back when I can!

Happy Running all

Cara

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 25th
hi all, just checking from the hotel. I will try to post later but we are going to hang out here for the day. We finished and I felt like a mountain goat the hills were numerous and steep. I felt good 1:47 for 13.36 miles my pace was just at 8:00mm. DD and DW stayed together and finished around 2:02 overall. These are unofficial I will get the chip time later. Thanks for all your support. I couldn't do this without you all.

Great job Runjr and Mrs. Runjr and Runjrita Sounds like a crazy

race course. Can't wait to hear the details. You guys order some room
service and RELAX (enter 80s music). Excellent time, old man! LOL

Wendy

Stay away from those snakes Chica!

When I was a kid in Oklahoma at church camp, we would trek down to the river
to baptisms. I remember on my fateful trek down to my baptism, I jumped
over a HUGE black snake. I think it was poetic justice. I took as affirmation that I was doing the right thing. :8}

Your picture makes me wonder if it was a snake at all or just my imagination. SOOOO FUNNY!

Cara

You have really bumped up that mileage. Good for you girl!

Chuck

I gave up Starbucks this year. I got tired of ordering a grande, non -fat
2-pump vanilla latte. I figure it has saved me almost $12 a week! So glad you guys didnt go on strike.

Your pooting comment reminded me of something my brother would say. He was very free to discuss his problems with gas! So funny!

Kevin
I know its probably gauche to ask, but what do you pay your running coach? Im curious what
the going rate is. Also, where did you find him?

I read one Dean Koontz and it freaked me out too much to read another. I can't even remember what it was!

I did a 2 mile warm-up then did my 8 x100s and finished with the
rest of the mileage. I am only doing two interval type things. I also
do 1.5 mile intervals which SUCK. It is SOOO hard. I've been trying to
determine if I am trying to run them too fast because I can't get them
all at the right pace and the last two are slow and hard. DH says just
keep plugging away at it and tells me not to change the pace, so that
is what I am doing. I really like doing the track work-outs. It makes
me "feel" like an athlete to be on the track!

I agree, you are an athlete!

GLBryan
Deer freek me out on runs. I run alot around NASA's Johnson Space
Center and there are a zillion of them out there. When I run early they
are all out there peering at me. At least they are better than cows.

Mary
I have found that the 100s really help you fix your form. You have
to pull it together to run faster and its like your body will do it if
you push the go button. Congrats on your ds wins in the meet! That is
really cool! I tell my DH the same thing. I would be faster if I had
some sprintin' shoes! LOL

MacD
Nothing makes me more sore than bending down in the garden. It is a killer for the hamstrings! That is why I don't do it!

Joe
Glad you are getting back at it.. I miss the SA countdown, btw.

SpiceGeek
ENTFJ here. Great pic at the finish line. You even remembered to
smile. What exactly is a cougar? Do you have to date young men or just
appreciate them for their beauty? If its the later, then I might
qualify :-)

Okay, here is my confession for the day. Don't scold me. I learned my lesson.

I ran 11 miles today. I have been sick for the last three days with runny nose, sore throat and
itchy ears. Last night I took a couple of Benadryl which is a sign that Im really not feeling good because I avoid medicine. Anyway, I headed
out at 7:30 am. I was too groggy from the drugs to get up earlier. I dont know what the temp was but it was hot. At about mile 4 I notice my
HR was crazy. I slowed down a bit but man was it hard. I had my fuel belt and I refilled it at a park. At mile 9 I started getting CHILLS!!
My HR was too high so I walked again. I finally made it home. My stomach was burning like I havent felt since giving birth and I had
goosebumps. DH said I was feeling heat stress. SO, with that said....I am DONE running in the sunlight. I ran 9 miles on Thursday at about 10 am and lost 3 pounds during the run because it was so hot. Tuesday marks my first day of 5 AM runs from here on out. It was kinda creepy. I feel fine now though but
Im telling you all as a warning.

I did get my 45 miles in for the week and was proud of the fact that I didnt miss a run despite the runny nose week!

Happy running alll! Stay away from snakes this week.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 25th
runjr - You are my hero. Nice race. Congrats to you and your family.

wendy - Slept fine. No snake nightmares.

cara - I write for a women's soccer magazine and we have a special section of training and technology in our next issue. Thus, checking out all the cool gear. So far I've checked out the Garmin 305 and the Polar RS800G3. I was kind of digging the polar but it has crapped out on me a few times. Am putting in fresh batteries before I go out tonight. Also, I run at night and my middle-aged eyes sometimes have trouble making out the numbers. The 305 watch is bulkier (because you wear the GPS part around your upper arm on the Polar) but the display is better except for the heart rate #. They are supposed to send me a 405 but I haven't gotten my hands on it yet. They launched at Boston and were short when I made my request.

3 miler went well last night. Am doing tomorrows 2 miler tonight as we are having a house full of people over for a low country boil. Have finished week 3 of HHST and it seems to pick up a bit from here which should be good.

Hey everyone, Went for 6 miles this evening and man was it hot and humid and hazy. Welcome to Pensacola summer weather! Traffic was bad also so breathign was a struggle. Slowed down to almost a 10 mint. mile pace and got my run in. I think I need to listen to Andahuff and start getting up early and run.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 25th

Good evening everyone! I hope everyone is having a good Memorial Day weekend! I took a rest day yesterday, and I did an easy 20 min run today (Coach threw out the 8 mile run). My hip problem, which is really mostly a quadriceps problem, is almost gone. I still feel it a little when I get up in the morning, but once I start moving around it pretty much goes away. I'll be doing another 20 min run tomorrow.

Joe, what kind of furniture did you buy? A nice recliner for you maybe?!? Wow that was some run! I'll bet that felt good to be outside running again.

Misswendy, yes today WAS busy! I feel like I just woke up and it's almost bedtime.

Macd019, great work on the gardening. Sounds like a serious xtraining day!

Cara, Congrats on the 8 miles w/ hills! Those are workouts aren't they? Wow, 29 miles. Good for you. I've been playing golf since I was 8 yrs old. I don't play well I shot a 99 yesterday for 18 holes, but I really enjoy it, and it's REALLY relaxing. Now since my leg/hip/quadriceps is better, I should be able to go back to walking while I play. I'm supposed to run a 5 mi or 2 mi race on June 7^th^. I haven't figured out which one I want to run yet. I'm leaning toward the 2 mile as it would be a repeat of my first ever race last summer. Maybe I could better my time (18:40).

Runjr, Congratulations! You rock! That was a great time! And congratulations also to DW & DD! Take it easy now and enjoy the rest of your day!

Andahuff, Ha! I had to look up ‘gauche' to see what it meant. I'm just a simple man. LOL. I don't mind talking about that kind of stuff (now there's a descriptive word for ya).

Jon charges $90 a month.

I remember doing a google search for ‘running coach' and their website ‘www.anaerobic.net' was one of the hits.

I ended up emailing him and talking to him on the phone for about an hour and a half discussing his thoughts on running, and coaching, and injuries (I had an injured Achilles then).

He takes on about 30 clients at a time, and I felt pretty honored by him wanting to coach me, as he normally coaches ‘elite' type athletes (there's that ‘athlete' term again).

The only speed intervals I've done have been the 4x 1 min strideouts 2 weeks ago which, if my Garmin was correct turned out to me 4x 150 meters and the 2 time trials coach had me do a couple months ago. One was 2x 1mi. and the other 3x 1 mi. Those were tough but don't you just LOVE the way it feels when you're done? All of these speed workouts were done ‘in the middle' of 5-6 mile runs.

Oh let me tell you a little secret... Shhh, don't tell DH what Jon charges, he may want to ‘up your rate' too! LOL

Congratulations on getting through the week! And 45 miles total that's great. When it starts getting warmer here most of my runs will be before sunup as well. Wear reflective clothing.

Gayle, good job on the 3 mile run and good luck on the 2 miles tonight!

Stan, Great job on the 3.45 miles! Enjoy your traveling.

Chuck, Nice 6 miles! Start early or be content to run slower. I get the feeling our seasons are reversed. This will my peak training time. In the winter when it gets really cold I think I'll have to focus on easy miles and just maintaining my mileage. For you it'll probably be the opposite.

Well we just put in "Homeward Bound" I love this movie. Good luck to everyone with their runs tomorrow! And to all you vets out there...

THANK YOU, AND GOD BLESS YOU!

Kevin

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of May 25th
hi all, I'm a little sore today and so is the family. That was a fun race and the best results are that DD and DW had so much fun they are now hooked. DD was looking online for another race last night. We might go to Iowa for a HM in late June. They are also going to commit to a full in the fall. I wish to thank you all for your kind words and support.

We got up early to get the day going and to get the energy bars in. It was cool so I wore a long sleeve light wicking shirt. We drove to the race to hop on a shuttle to take you to the state capitol building where the race starts. We waited in line for about 30 minutes to get to the bathrooms. The elite runners took off (BQ) and then the rest of the full marathoners took off. We were now ready to line up for the race and got in the fence line between the 1:40 and 1:50 pacers. There were 2866 HM'ers. I hugged DD and DW and we started. I went out fast and decided to push from the beginning. The first three mile paces were 7:46's and 7:49. The course was under and over bridges and some big hills around mile 4. It felt like San Fransisco. I was thinking that DD and DW were having a hard time because it was somewhat unexpected. I just decided to go as hard as I could up the hills and passed many people uphill. Mile 4-6 all under 8:00mm. The next areas were awesome we were in between to large lakes and we saw the college rowing teams out and ran on gravel for about a mile near the lake shore under tree cover. Mile 7-8 were the biggest hills and I had 8:03 and 8:08 during this time. I was really tired at this point but started really using all the gels and water from my fuel belt. I thought the hills were almost done at this time but there was another few large ones to come. Mile 11 had the last of them but it was tough. I had an 8:20 mile in there and 8:27 after the hills as we ran into the wind and headed for home. The last .3 miles I somehow had decided to sprint and get it at 10mph. I felt good but waited nervously for DD and DW. DD was ready to push DW at about mile 11 but they decided to finish together. They finished official chip time 2:03 and I finished 1:46:58. 8:10 pace but if I take the 13.36 miles that the garmin recoreded 7:59 pace. ( the course on map my run is 13.26). DD and DW did great. They really pushed throught the hills and loved the difficult run. I was so proud of them and that is what made the race special for me.

I think I figuered out why the 13.36 miles because it is a BQ and if you shorten all the corners it could be as low as 13.109. Am I right on this? All of us in the family must learn how to run down steep hills as it takes a different form than what I am know. I think I waste too much energy slowing down.

joe - thanks for the kind words and letting me be part of this thread. Your team really helped push me throught the tough spots of the race. My knees felt good with the bands on them. I think you should give it a try.

misswendy - thanks for thinking of us yesterday. I was looking for snakes but didn't see any, but I thought about that during my run. Was your DH here in Wisconsin, I think I saw Elvis. Great 10 miles!!

chuck - going up the hills I thought of you saying how you love hills and eat them up. Change up some music.

macd - thanks for your support. You reminded me that mulch is next week. I am really happy that you are beginning to run again. You will get in a race again with your DD's.

cara - keep working the hills. It really helped me the last week or so. Great running this past week. The slower run days and hills have helped me reach back for extra when you need it.

andahuff - awesome week for you. I feel like an old man today. I would bet you are taking your fuel belt everyday by you with the heat. Your running is simply awesome.

gayle - thanks for the kind words. You are doing great with your running, keep pushing.

kevee - great running by you. You are always consistent. Thanks for your comments about the slower running as well. I hope you got to check out some new shoes.

thanks and God Bless, and a special thank-you to our Veterans.
