Couch to 5K Training Question

Hi,

I'm getting back into running after a long layoff due to a broken bone in my foot.

I'm on week 5 of the Couch to 5K program, and I'm getting ready to do the third run of the week tomorrow, which is a 20 min. run with no walking. I'm wondering if I can expect to complete the run, though, since the longest single stretch of running so far in any given workout has been 8 min. Why the sudden jump to a 20 min run? Is it realistic to expect to be able to complete that run with no walking? I'd like to think I can do it, but I haven't even had to run 10 min straight on this program yet, let alone 20 min.

Any thoughts??

Thanks.

Jeff

Re: Couch to 5K Training Question

I think you will surprise yourself. I've seen post after post on these threads and others from those (including myself) who didn't think they could do it and did. It is an awesome feeling and will carry you through the rest of the program because you will know that you can do it.

Re: Couch to 5K Training Question

Jeff - I know exactly where you are coming from. I started it in feb and really had difficulty at the beginning which really ticked me off as I still think of myself as an athlete even though I had let myself go. By the end of it I could do the 5k at a decent pace and have been building from there. Be patient.

Jeff -

What GLB says is absolutely true.  I know how frustrating it can be, but take it slow and you'll hit it.  Post and let us know how great you feel after your run.   Have faith in C25K but, more importantly, have faith in yourself.

Happy Running,

Valerie

Jeff,

Nice job!   I have completed C25K once before and had the same doubts then.  I have had knee surgery, so tonight I started W1 D1 and am looking forward to D2.

Keep up the good work!

Re: Couch to 5K Training Question

Hey RTX - There's a guy in my group (Doug) who did C25K as part of the Long Haul group (you can lurk on our thread).  He just did W1D1 today ( he's doing it over again) b/c he got sidelined with a back injury.  You guys should link up and cheer each other on.  There also a woman, middleagedmama??, who just started today too!  Someone start a thread!!!  Seriously, go talk to Doug.

Re: Couch to 5K Training Question

Well done, Jeff, for the 20 minutes! I like to hear about people doing the 20 minutes successfully because I'm in week 5.. it seems so improbable, like you said, when we've only done less than half of that in one go before. But obviously it's possible (even if right now it sounds to me like a bit of a fairy story).. I must believe, I must believe.. It'll be interesting seeing how many minutes I can do at least.

Re: Couch to 5K Training Question

Epona . .. maybe if you think of this way it will help . . . in W5D1 you will run 15 min total.  In W5D2 you will run 16 minutes total . . that is only 4 minutes away from the 20 minutes for day 3.  So what if you took a little bit of a breather (i.e. walk break) in there .  . you did run more than half of 20 minutes .. . you ran 80% of 20 minutes!  Your cardiovascular system is building up to running without breaks.  That being said . . .I, too, felt intimidated by the 20 minutes.  But, I also felt intimidated the first time I ran 5 minutes. I am always happily surprised when I am able to complete each new step.  And, I'm finding myself huffing and puffing less and smiling more.  This program is ingenious!

Re: Couch to 5K Training Question

Hi guys,

you all must be almost done with the program, how does it feel to be running without walking on regular basis? I just finished week 6 today and still cannot imagine doing no intervals from now on. I agree with the rest of you that it was hard to imagine running 5 min and I was super nervous before W5D3 20 minutes run and it did get easier!
