Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!

Hmmph! I think I am ripped and no one calls me ripped. Sheesh! Kevin...............tell them I'm ripped!

Doug, I think you'll be surprised at how fast you're able to come back. Muscles have memories. I've had several periods over the last year where I had to take some time off from running and it came back quicker than I thought it would. I say go ahead and sign up for a 5K. You'll be ready in a few months. Really, you will. Michael, way to go. HM! How cool is that? Have you decided on a training plan?

Biked and ran today. Time to sleep. Stay safe everyone.

Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!

Congrats, Doug, on your return to running. It's great to hear that you're back on the road. How'd the dog do? I always knew I liked you -- must be the lefty thing. :p

I took yesterday and today off, just to let the last of the funny soreness go away. I'll be back on the road again tomorrow morning; I'm figuring on something between three and six miles, depending on when I get out the door and how I feel while I'm out there. It's weird (but nice) not to have hard-and-fast distances and paces to run. I'm definitely going to enjoy running for fun over the next few weeks.

I looked at my marathon training plan last night (didn't feel like grading), and the first week's long run is 13 miles. Looks like I'm going to have to keep up my mileage, even if I'm just running for fun. My plan has me shooting for a 4:12 (or so) marathon time, which works out to something like a 9:35 pace. I figure I'll be thrilled with anything under 4:30 (that's about 10:15 per mile). I'm sure those targets will get adjusted as I train. Should be fun (?).

I need to get serious about finding some sort of cross-training activity. I don't think I can get the intensity I need from biking in my area -- too many cars to run into. I wish I liked swimming, and that I had ready access to a pool. The not liking swimming is the bigger obstacle. Maybe it's time to invest in a stationary bike or something like that. Where to put it...?

I also need to find someplace with hills. I swear sometimes I'm back in the middle of Ohio (where I went to college) -- it's flatter than flat out here. Just thinking about those bridges makes my quads ache. The worst part is that the elevation change wasn't that large and the distances weren't that great either; my muscles just weren't ready for it. I definitely need to remember Kimber's tips for running hills!

Well, enough out of me. Gotta do some work before a full day of meetings and prepping for a trustee meeting tomorrow.

Don

Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!

I think the dog was more tired out than I was by the end of it lol. We got home and had some water and passed out in her bed.

She did great, I'm really proud of her. Didn't try to pull or go too fast, she let me be the one to set the pace. She was perfect on the trail, and excellent on the road (I ran with her on the inside). She's large and powerful, she's built to run. Being a city dog she doesn't get to do it enough. I wouldn't be able to do it without her head halty though, that thing is a life saver. Was it you asking about running with dogs? I know someone did in the other thread but I can't recall.

Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!
Hey there fellow lefty! I didn't ask about dogs, but I've been thinking about it a lot lately. What kind of dog do you have and how old is she? Not that a running dog in Canada would be the same as a running dog in Florida. I think one here would have to have next to no fur. I had a big old lab/Samoyed cross when I lived in North Dakota. He was black, but had the fur of a Samoyed. One summer, it was about 99 degrees with 99% humidity, he went running off (I lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere). When he came back he was so hot he could hardly walk. I thought he was going to die. The house didn't have A/C, so I picked him up and carried him into the basement (not a finished basement) where it was cooler and poured water over him.

I'd love to have a Komodor, they're Hungarian sheepdogs. I've had one before. They can go forever, but they're hard to train. Have definite ideas of their own.

Went bike riding again today. I'm really liking it! Saves gas money too. I have a Honda Civic Hybrid. It gets between 40 - 45 miles to the gallon. I figured out (genius that I am) that it costs me almost $0.10/mile just in gas now.

Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!
Okay, now see I LIKE a new thread. It appeals to my Adrian Monk OCD housekeeping tendencies, cleaning up each week or something. But I'll go with whatever the group likes.

Yesterday I went for the prescribed 4 mile run acc. to my plan. I was a little tired and stiff after Sunday's race but had to run a pretty good pace because I put something in the oven for a lunch at school at it had to come out no later than my run. So when I wanted to slow up, I kept thinking about burning that peach cobbler and having to start over. Now there's one way to keep you moving!

Daughter got the wrist casted yesterday and they gave her a waterproof one so she is much happier. One of her brothers accused her of faking (incl doctoring the x-rays - a reference to Dwight on The Office claiming Meredith faked her broken pelvis).

Michael likes to register for the race and I am the nervous nelly who waits and thinks about it and waits some more. Do I need to register before the end of May to get the personalized bib? And what the heck is that anyway? I guess - I never thought I'd do a 10K and I AM doing the HH 1/2 program so I'll mull this over more today. How's that for committment ha ha. I'm sure I will it's just s-c-a-r-y...

Don - love the shirt. Generally I wouldn't call attention to my big ol butt but I think they're a hoot. I'm in.

Glad Doug is back - this is encouraging to see and a reminder that the obstacles are just temporary diversions, that's all.

I, too, need to find some kind of cross-training activity. I don't have a bike but I'm a pretty good swimmer. I have to admit, I've had the teeny-weeniest interest in those mini-triathlons. The eye doctor who did my lasik is my age and when I go to see her all we do is talk about running. She started in college and has run several marathons and now does triathlons so she got my interest going.

Today's is weigh-in day. Yuck since I think I'm at a standstill again. I think I'm going to buy one of those scales that measures body fat so I can at least see if that's improving.

Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!

Angie, I'm right there with you on the weigh in. In my two months off I gained 7 lbs. Ouch!

Nico, she's 3yr old English Pointer. In the summetime I take her swimming with me (I leave her on a 30 ft lead in the water because she's prone to taking off. city dogs....), she loves the water. Or she just gets in my son's wading pool hah! Here's a couple of pics of her:

Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!

Oh Doug, she is soooo cute. http://community.active.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif Glad you two were able to get out and run.

Angie, a personalized bib is your racing bib with your number. If you register early, it has your name on it too. I think it's pretty cool. You need to sign up. Do it now!

Nico, I hate you! You and your gas saving car. I get 18 mpg at best. I haven't driven over 70 in forever. I coast down the road to the stop signs. It's pathetic. I spent $200.00 last week alone for gas. And I put $82.00 in it today. Something's got to give.

Don, I have one of these . You can adjust the resistence to make it really hard to pedal. You'd be better off buying a regular bike (that you could use) and setting it up on a trainer. My Tuesday bike workout is always on the trainer. I do drills and HR zone riding. I ride to hit my lactic threshold, ride there for a few minutes, then back down to an easy gear for a few minutes then back to a harder gear. My coach figures it all out for me. I used it all winter when I couldn't ride in the dark. If you use it right, it's a harder workout than riding on the road. I'd rather spend the money on a bike that you can take out and ride than on a stationary bike, but that's just me.

15 stitches in my other leg today. I had a skin cancer cut out. I didn't realize it would be so big. Now I have stitches in both legs. I'm a mess. :_| Can't exercise today but I expect to run tomorrow. My swimming is on hold for a week but otherwise, I'm back on track.

Stay safe. And don't drink the _Flavor-Aid_!

Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!
Doug - Great job getting back into your running shoes and I am glad you are being wise and listening to your body. It will come back faster then you think and you will be back where you were. Just keep listening to your body.

Kimber - I have no training plan in mind for the 1/2 yet. I will think about it for a while and put some base miles in. What is this with skin cancer!!! Did I miss that post. Well, I hope everything from here out is better and skin cancer is in the past.

Don - The shirt looks great. I am in for one. If we only had a few thousand Long Hauler's then the price would some down I am sure.

Angie - I noticed you didn't commit for the last race until the end and thought on it forever. Myself, I just need to be training for a race as motivation. Yes, if you want your name on the bib the deadline if the end of the month. Did you mention liking to swim???? Kimber, I think we have the next Tri-gal here in Angie. The only way I could do a tri is if they replaced swimming with something like pool and a 6 of Sam Adams.

Today I went out for about a 4 mile run and a few hours later followed it with a 13 mile bike ride. Yes I am sore but I am not hurt. Honestly what hurts most is my behind since it is not used to a bike saddle anymore.

Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!
Kimber - I'm with Mike. Where'd I miss the skin cancer post?!?!?! http://planetsmilies.net/confused-smiley-17553.gif Wow, I hope you're okay!

Good idea about the bike trainer; I'd talked with my wife this past winter about getting one for her bike, but I completely forgot about that option. Good call. (And you can hate me and my Prius -- I'm at 45.7 mpg at the moment; I'm hoping to hit 46 by the time I get home from teaching tonight.)

Doug - I did ask about running with a dog in the previous thread. The only problem is that the dog in question is a pomeranian -- one of the little yippy-dogs. Your dog's a beauty.

Mike - the price comes down a few bucks if we get to 12 Long Haulers. I only have sizes for six at the moment (I'll double-check my list, though). I also wouldn't be averse to ordering some extras up front (on my own dime) in case people might be interested in the future. Since you're not into swimming unless it's a pool filled with beer, you might consider duathlon -- it's like a triathlon without the swimming.

Nico - I believe the prices for the t-shirts are based on a single color for the entire order. We'd talked about gray in the past, but I'd be fine with changing if that's what people want. I think we ended up with gray because it was neutral without the see-through-when-wet problems associated with white.

Angie - go for the personalized bib. Way cool. You'll look just like the elites!

Well, done with teaching for the week. Now I just need to survive a Trustee meeting tomorrow, then build a database by Monday and I'm in the clear (for a little while, anyway). I'll be off to Massachusetts again in a couple of weeks. Whee!

Complete non-sequitur: My favorite running slogan so far is, "My sport is your sport's punishment." Gotta get me one of those t-shirts....

Have a great night, folks.

Okay, okay. I registered. I felt like I was 12 and jumping off the high dive.

Cute dog, Doug!!

Don - I would take a Medium if you don't have a size for me down.

My doggies don't run, but they love to ride in the car. Here's the view from my rear view window:

Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!

Angie - Got it. Love the photo of your dogs -- content and composition. Clever to get the photo in the side-view mirror.

Okay. Here's what I have by way of t-shirt sizes so far. Please chime in if I've missed you or if you're just a little late to the party. :)

  • Angie: Medium
  • Don: Large
  • Karen (Kimber): Medium
  • Kevin: 2XL
  • Mike: Large
  • Nico: Small
  • Val: Large

I figure I'll wait until Monday to make sure everybody who's interested is still on-board and that there are no design suggestions. At that point, I'll place the order. Just five more takers until a price break! :p

I've sold plenty of fountain pens and I participate in paperbackswap.com, so I'm at the post office pretty regularly. I'm perfectly happy to take care of payment-handling and shipping from my location (I don't mind international shipping, either; I'm getting to be a pro at the customs forms). I'm also pretty flexible on payment. I have a PayPal account that's set up to take credit cards, and I have no objection to personal checks or money orders. I'll post more complete details when we get to that point.

I went out for a nice five mile run this morning. It was a perfect day for it -- sunny and 42F. I planned for a three mile run, but figured I'd see how I felt. I was feeling great at three miles, so I decided to add another mile. That fourth mile ended a little farther from home than I wanted to walk, so I decided to tack on another half-mile. Well, at that point it seemed silly to stop at 4.5, so I just went the full five. That ended right at the end of my street. Couldn't have worked out better. I let my body dictate the pace and distance and I was just along for the ride. I could have kept going, but I do have to go to work today. :)

For the last few weeks, I've been noticing some stiffness at the base of my toes and in my achilles tendons. I didn't want to change things up so close to the half marathon, but I'd been suspecting that it was time for a shoe change. I did that this morning, and what a difference! Everything just feels better. Surprising, too -- I was only at about 264 miles on this last pair. Hmph. This is gonna get expensive.

Oh, by the way Kimber -- 46.0 MPG! Yee-haw! :p (I hope your stitches -- both sets -- are feeling better.)

Run/heal/rest/eat/sleep well.

Don

Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!

Don, put me down for a large shirt... thanks for the hard work that you have done on the project..:D I hope the new shoes helps, I have a pair I do my daily training in and a new pair that I only race in. I also have a pair put up that I haven't worn yet. Once my daily shoes are worn out I will start training in my race shoes and start racing in the new pair..... i hope that made since... it got me confused...

I love the pics of the dogs guys, thanks for posting them.. My grandson's dog runs with me on my neighborhood runs, I run 4 miles and he runs about 10 miles.. I will take his pic and post it..

Just got back from a 5 mile run at the Sportsplex, it was getting warm by the time I finished the run.. I'm getting to know some of the folks that walk/run there and this morning I walked with 2 of them before I started my run. I went over 300 miles for the year with my running on Tuesday's run. Where is everyone's else at on there mileage for the year????

Happy running,

Frank N Mississippi

Re: The Long Haul - Haulin' !!!!
Can't claim I meant to take that photo that way - took it with my phone while driving, wasn't even sure I'd got it, but I just love to see how happy they are in the car.

Kimber - enough with the stitches - yeoowww! I think you are a tough cookie and an inspiration for me not to whine about my little aches and pains.

Don - I forgot to ask - I was very interested in what you said earlier about fountain pens. I find at my advanced age of 45 that arthritis is setting in. Fortunately, it is strangely worse in my left hand than right though I am right-handed. But anytime I do a lot with my hands, e.g. gardening all day, I am so stiff and sore the next day. Writing is becoming one of those things that doesn't quite feel the same if I have to do a lot of it, I prefer typing. But I'm very judgmental about which pens "feel good" these days so I'm intrigued. I know zero about fountain pens. If I wanted to buy one and try it, do you have a suggestion?

Val - I have no suggestions for geese. But I have a story - when we were little somebody gave us some ducklings - turned out they were geese and got big and chased the neighbors, honked too loud etc. So we gave them to the local park where there were ponds and other geese/ducks. The whole time growing up I would go to this park in this small town in Kansas and we'd always wonder which were descendants of Pinky and Marvin. When I was in grad school, my grandmother casually mentioned at a Christmas gathering that we ate them. What??!! She said they were draining those ponds that year so my mother took them to the poulterer and we had them dressed and ate them. My mother laughed and confirmed the story while my brothers and I were dumbfounded and just felt ill. Gee mom, any other pets we ate? Amazing I'm not on a roof with an automatic weapon.
