Re: omg-mcm MOUNTAINS!!!!
WOW!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I was dreading the hills too. I've been trying to get my knees and quads stronger just because of the elevation chart. I have had arthroscopic surgery on both knees and climbing stairs put a tingly tiring sensation so I was not happy with that elevation chart at all. I ran the Houston Chevron Marathon this year and the eleveation is no where near as bad as it looked on the MCM. I was told I'd never run again. I've been running since 1994 and I HAVE TO get through this marathon all in one piece and FINISH IT. I just have to but this is the only part I was so afraid of, failing and having to drop out. But thank you all for the encouraging 'it's nothing' comments I'm praying I can continue to run after this marathon. This was very helpful...and yeah I would love that roll....lol!!! God Bless you all!!

DCtoPgh wrote:Len pointed to the final hill when we ran past it at the start last year... my comment was something to the effect of "That's it?!" To be honest I don't remember any hills- at the start, through the Palisades (or was that the start?), the hardest part for me was the bridge which was surely more psychological than anything else. You'll be fine.

That comment by Kat was what made me take another look at that hill, after 14 years, and realize just how small it is. That thing had always bothered me, being so near the end, but I had never looked at it at the beginning of the race.

Re: omg-mcm MOUNTAINS!!!!
Being from Houston, I can say that although the hills are not as bad as they seem, they did catch me by surprise at MCM. They actually only cut off about 10 mins from my worst Houston time and that was almost 2 yrs after running my second Houston marathon. Now I know that the next flat marathon will be great and the next "hilly" one will be better. With all the beautiful scenery and the hoopla, you won't even notice the hills at MCM or RNR San Diego if you ever do that one. At MCM, I thought the worst one was the last little one at the finish, just to find out the next day that it was actually really small..LOL.

Re: omg-mcm MOUNTAINS!!!!

Actually, what hills are you guys talking about? I find it more difficult running flat areas -- all the same muscle groups. Even when I'm visiting Southwest FL, I'll run steps or hit a parking garage on the weekend just to get some real running in there.

Therein lies your solution -- a good parking garage -- after hours and never alone (am I clear?).

The parking garage is my trick when it snows or is otherwise icey. Towson State -- sorry -- it's always going to be Towson State until they send me white-out for my diploma (not that my BS degree was anything but) -- has a HUGE 5 story garage that's about 1/3 of a mile with one lap. 1.2 mile warm up; Levels 1 - 4 twice; 1.2 miles cool down on the way home. Easy 5 miles.

Do well.

That was one thing I liked about Nashville. Rolling hills, none of then steep and only one very long, and you got to constantly change how you use your muscles.

Re: omg-mcm MOUNTAINS!!!!
Hey you want hills ? I got your hills right here! Seriously, anyone doing Baltimore with me this year? Check out the elevation chart. Borrowing from an earlier post, this looks like an EKG. Plus the head wind out by Fort McHenry. It is very cool a Five Guys and some good Irish pubs are in the Inner Harbor area walking back from the finish. Do you hear me Ruby? Watch the heat this weekend my east coast friends. --- Carl.

Re: omg-mcm MOUNTAINS!!!!
Hi, Ruby. It is October 11th. It is the reason I'm not doing the MCM being only two weeks apart. That and the JFK ultra on November 22. I'm doing the Phila. Distance run on Sept. 21. Len filled me in on it and it sounds cool ( can't wait to have a true cheesesteak)! Hmm... did I really get into running just for the guilt-free eating? Paging Dr. Freud. Are you doing the MCM this year? And tell me about this ultra of yours in Sept.. So cool ! --Carl.

Re: omg-mcm MOUNTAINS!!!!

Yes I'm doing the MCM again this year. The 50K is in September and is in the McLean, VA area. Check out this link it has a video from last year's race. http://www.thenorthface.com/endurancechallenge/races/2008/wdc_overview.html

There's also a 10K, 1/2 marathon, 50K and 50 Miler going on all on the same day. You might want to check it out for next year.
