Training, train by distance, i.e. miles or time?

I have been training by miles but it looks like the Marathon training program on active.com is using minutes run. What should I do?

Re: Training, train by distance, i.e. miles or time?
Kelly,
Welcome to active.com! I would experiment with a few days of each and then go with what you find works best for you. I happen to prefer miles for my runs, but I go by time when I'm on an elliptical or bike trainer. Let us know if you have any more questions or comments.
Good luck and happy running!
Jay

ps - Which 'thon are you training for?

You're welcome! We'll be training together since I'll be running Baltimore on the same weekend.

Re: Training, train by distance, i.e. miles or time?
I once read something by Arthur Lydiard where he remarked that if you're training for fitness, it's better to train my time, but if you're training for a race, its better to train by distance. I see the value in his advice: no matter how long you train time-wise, at some point you have to prepare to run 20+ miles.
