Wetsuits

I am new to the sport and I just finished my first sprint triathlon in San Diego. Not only was it my first open water swim but it was also the first time wearing a new wetsuit (other than trying it on to make sure it fit). I am in no way a great swimmer but during the race my arms felt constricted and the collar rubbed an abrasion on the back of my neck that made it impossible to swim freestyle. I had to dog-paddle and float (thank God for bouyancy!). My question is this: will the suit get easier to swim in when it gets "broken in" and do you think the neck abrasion was due to my technique (remember I'm a newbie), or should I get another wetsuit. I still enjoyed the race and plan on many more. thanks for your help.

Re: Wetsuits
try lubing your neck next time with bodyglide and see if that helps if not maybe another wetsuit is in order. I think you'll get used to the arm constriction as you do more open water swims. good luck and have fun

Re: Wetsuits

You have arm contstriction for 3 reasons,

1-Your shoulders amy be weak still from not being a strong swimmer to start. Start using gloves/paddles in the pool, and strength trainig for your shoulders.

2-If you purchased a lower end wetsuit, then the material in the arms will limit you as well. Its night and day between low end and high end suits, I experienced this first hand, I went from an Orca Evo to a Q Roo superfull, the superfull feels like you are not even in a wetsuit.

3-The suit may be too small.

Don't forget open water will always be far more difficult, especially the colder the water is, keep getting out in the open water and you will be fine.
