Maybe we should all calm down before she starts to think this is some kind of bizarre on-line cult desperate to recruit new members.
Wait.....you mean we aren't??

Oh wait... I get it now...

Yep, we're a sly bunch. I had never run more than 4 miles, worked out biked, hiked and xctry skied, then the old 60th was around the corner and I thought I needed to run a marathon before I did turn 60. Well, short story, trained 4 months, ran NYC (got in on the first try, must have something to do with my age) ran it in 4:54.24, and then I was hooked. Ran the MCM last year and all things being equal, will run Chicago this year. But, I will be in DC with a lot of other people of this board and hand out cookies, chocolates, and assorted other goodies, so maybe you want to see if you can do a bib transfer, I have the feeling that you'd be good and ready to run by that time. Come on Pam, you want to do this.

Okay, let's think 1 or 2 half marathons in the fall (plus shorter races) and spring for your first marathon... I'll come up with some ideas, as I'm sure others will, but at the moment dinner's ready!
But you'll love our Kool Aid! It'll make you faster and more physically fit and mentally tougher and happier and...!

Yes, I like your plan. I just looked at some marathon race results and got a little freaked.
I'll start looking for some half marathons this fall - I'm almost positive I can do that.... and then maybe ING marathon in March of '09
And yes, dinner is ready for me to... but now I have a big goal!!!!
Thanks for the koolaid guys!! See ya tomorrow

Wow, i even want to run a marathon now.
ps. Sara, I didn't know that is how you spelled ptui. I like.

Well coming up with a few early candidates for you is pretty much already done by you, Pam.
Nov 27 - Atlanta Half Marathon (Thanksgiving)
Dec 13 - Thunder Road Half Marathon
As for a spring marathon, yeah, look into your hometown race to start, ING Georgia. If you want flatter, a trip out to Shamrock will do the trick. They're not "very" low key, but if you go too low key, you're going to lose a lot of other first timers. They're certainly not mega events. Shamrock is probably a better fit for you, lower key and much flatter, but ING Georgia's good too and you'll have hometown support.
Anyway that's all of the Kool Aid I have for tonight. I have to stir up a new batch. What's your favorite flavor?

If you're willing to travel a little, you could do Pittsburgh (May 3).

Pittsburgh does have the advantage of better timing for training (spring vs winter). You could do the ING GA Half as part of your training. Of course it's a total coincidence that a bunch of us will just happen to be there...

Ok - half marathon it is.... for this year (yes, I was easy to persuade - you got another one sucked in)
Here are the ones I'm pondering (I need some input from those who have done these before)
November 8
• Chickamauga Battlefield Half Marathon, Chickamauga, Ga
November 27
• Atlanta Half Marathon, Atlanta, Ga.
December 13
• Thunder Road Half Marathon, Charlotte, NC
Now - a recommended running schedule?? Book?? (I do better with a written out schedule so I can follow it and check it off)
And just so you know - I gave the kool aid to my hubby - he drank it too (and for those that missed the joke I've conned him into running a half with me!!!!)
Oh - and for flavor - Great Bluedini... do they still make that??? It was the awesome one that had green powder but turned blue when it was mixed with water.

This just in... Ok, the secret plot for my wife to kill me has resulted in:
- My cutting the grass
- Cleaning the cat litter
- 3 insulin shots to cats
- 3 pills to one cat
- My doing the dishes
- Scheduled to her up from the airport 7 hours late and at midnight because Southwest let people overbook flying out of Columbus, OH (glad tomorrow is an off-day)
- And one marathoner-wanna-be (will-a-be?).
The last one is the best.
As for marathons, I encourage the Shamrock. I felt that race was well run and actually lots of fun. Ok, pass the guys handing out beer at 3.5 miles / 10 miles on the 1/2 marathon. But for those in shape, do the dolphin or whale challenges (8K followed by either the 1/2 or whole marathon the next day). The races become twice as much fun. Flat course; HUGE tent (like 40X80 yards) on the beach. For flight entertainment, F-18s flying all afternoon on Friday. Expo was nice; certainly better than Baltimore's which was overcrowded. Good social conscious in collecting/donating running shoes.
But.... I still say go for it all. BIG SUR. I love that race. You can't top the scenery or the people. Sure there are hills but you run 'em over. If you have to walk, look to the left, there's whole ocean out there. And where else can you get a marathon with a 4500 person limit that has an expo with the likes of Bart Yasso and Dean Karnazes and a slew of other runners (one was a former Olympic marathon medalist from Australia who now just comes to run this race in around 4 hours). Make a vacation out of it -- but be sure to visit the beach in Carmel (next to Pebble Beach) immediately after the race to walk into the cold water. Your legs will love you for it.
Welcome aboard. Remember, you don't running because you grow old, you grow old when you stop running.

Ok - so I CAN'T STOP thinking about my FIRST marathon (or half marathon) and its all your fault (you collectively - mostly directed to TR for starting the secret plot)
I really can travel anywhere for my first full or half... I was just thinking it would be easier to do something close to home. TR you really think I should go big and go for it all my first time?? I just dont want to get too big and not be able to do it. Maybe I'll train for a full and then if closer to the date I'm not ready I can just sign up for the half.
Ok - I need my coffee... ttfn.
Should I move this post elsewhere or are we having fun adding page after page? Maybe we should see if we can hit a 26.2 page post in honor of my "goal" lol
wow I need coffee.

The timing for Big Sur is excellent for you, late April. It fits the plan of a half or two in the fall and your first marathon in the spring. While I haven't run it, it's high on my list. The main questions are travel expense and vacation time. Most marathon trips are a weekend extended by a day; with Big Sur, you'll want more time. Registration opens in September and I believe closes in a couple of months. Race day logistically, it's not an easy one. The shuttle leaves at 3 am (but Pacific time). If you want minor cost, easy logistics, and an easy back-out, this isn't it. If you want beautiful scenery and a great vacation, then it's an excellent choice.
I would definitely discourage training as if you're aiming at a fall marathon. It would be too much, too quick and injury would be too likely. Slowly build up your miles during the summer and having fun with your 5Ks & 10Ks. Perhaps around September, start thinking of it as training for your first half. You'll really be well on the road to that already, but you need more base miles first.
Thunder Road Half
There were 1,700 in the half and 840 in the full last year. The races begin together. Crowding isn't a problem. Crowd support is on the light side, but it's not bad for a fairly low key event. Weather-wise, well the first year I ran it was freezing - literally, the volunteers were yelling "ice" at the water stops because the spilled fluids were freezing. Last year, the weather was perfect for a half. As I mentioned yesterday, the course is rolling, no huge or steep hills, but you're always going up or down to some degree. It's not a PR course, but it's not bad. And if you're primarily thinking of it as early practice for a spring marathon, the rolling hills are a bonus.
The expo is pretty low key, no lines or stress, fairly small but still pleasant. The medal last year was very nice.
Charlotte hotels aren't too expensive. Last year, I got the Westin via Priceline for $70/night, but to keep things simple and flexible, I'd recommend a cancellable reservation. I just checked - the Westin's current rate is too high ($199). The Hilton at $127 would be my choice. It works well logistically for the start, expo, and exploring Uptown. The half's finish is in a somewhat strange spot, but only a mile or so away. You should absolutely walk a mile or two after your half no matter where you stay.
I can't provide any insight into Chickamauga, but if you do run it, I kind of like the timing of it combined with doing the Thunder Road Half as well. Also if you're training doesn't make you feel ready for early November, you'll still have another half in your pocket for mid-December.
I think the thread's fine here; it is a secret plot after all. Besides, our threads just go wherever they go.
Edit after seeing this message posted - holy **** that was way longer than I thought I wrote!

A 26.2 page thread is well within the capabilities of this group. I noticed you said "lighten up" in regard to the weight-related portion of this thread (several pages ago). Very nice turn of phrase. And Sara, thanks so much for getting the Hotel California going in my head. At least it bumped out the Pina Colada song.
