I thought I would start a new thread....I am running an old time favorite next weekend- the sheehan classic- named after a now deceased doctor who also was a runner and wrote books about running. There is always a medal and it has one of his quotes on it- different every year, I am really looking forward to it as I missed it the past 2 years. Anyone else have plans for next weekend?
There's a father's day 5K next Sunday that I'm thinking about running. I'm sure many on the board will be familiar with George Sheehan. Among other things, for years he wrote a column for Runners World. As he got older, he did something I have thought of emulating - he ran three 10 milers each week as his routine training. It's easier on the body in many ways. You only run 3 days a week and always have a day off between runs. For marathon training you just extend one of the runs.
We've come this far and it's still the same,
Runnin' out here in the rain.
Just one more mile, if only you could fly.

I have introduced an 8-mile run as my "base" training run, doing the run twice per week. I have a long run on the weekend. Finally, I introduced hill running this past Thursday.
I figure that my training runs are on the right track. I am scheduled to do a 10k this Saturday . . . we'll see if I am getting any faster. (I am definitely more fit, since I complete the 8-mile run in decent time, no walking . . .)
Craig, where is the 5k on fla day? I am planning on the sheehan still, however baseball has put a wrench in my life. Both boys have decided they need to play all stars and the coaches have decided this is a perfect weekend to start- I am waiting for scheduals with my fingers crossed that nothing interfers with my run.
I'm doing a Father's Day race on Sunday. I can't decide if I want to do the 5K or 10K. Last year I ran the 10K as my first in a decade and had a great race (my "Who's a runner?!" race) so I'm worried to go out there this year and have a bad race. But then I read that and it's a really dumb reason not to run a race. Argh.
I do today what you won't, so tomorrow I do what you can't.

Kat, have fun at the 10K! ![]()
I just found a half-marathon near York, PA Saturday. That's probably farther than I want to drive. I also got a flyer for a 5K/10K/15K in Downingtown, PA July 4th and there's a 10K in Washington's Crossing PA, also July 4th. I might take the 15K over the 10K. This Sunday is a 5K in Philly and there's another 5K near where I work next Wednesday (18th). There are lots of 5Ks but I'd rather run something longer. And there are a number of longer trail races, but I think I need some trail practice first.

Hey Len. that is funny cause that is exactly what i did last year to a 'T'. Actually it called for 2 days of running 1hour and one long run. The 1hour runs i turned into 10 miles (which was not far off anyways). I never had tired legs and zippo knee issues.
As you may recall I thought the whole time I was doing too little for marathon training. this year I am going a slightly different route.
What's a good website to find local races? Sometimes I'll find some races but they're not posted anywhere.
I use a bunch of different sources, but they're all local to the Philadelphia area. Some also cover areas east (New Jersey), some west (Reading, Lancaster, Harrisburg, PA), some south (Delaware) but they're all Philly oriented. You should be able to find similar web sites in your area. If you go to your "My Active" there will usually be some listings there as well.

It's actually not a bad way to go (and very similar to FIRST). Though 1 hour for me is a bit short of 10 miles. You can always do one as a tempo run. If you want to do intervals or strides, they're easy to add to the other weekday. Throw in some cross-training on the other days and it makes a good plan.
