Re: Anyone else start the C25k (April 21-27)? ((NOW IN WEEK 8!))
Went to a new trail to run this morning. My knees were complaining about my last 5 or 6 runs on concrete, so I went to a beautiful local trail and really enjoyed it. I ran 3 miles at about a 10:45 pace. It was really, really hot and I was in the woods for much of the run. The shade was nice, but there was no wind...so it was hot. I was glad to get back to the car. I'm hoping to run again tomorrow and then take Friday off. My 5k race is Saturday. YAY! :)

Re: Anyone else start the C25k (April 21-27)? ((NOW IN WEEK 8!))

I did my 4.5K run for W8R2 today. It went alright but I had to stop and walk a couple times due to pain in my quads. They were literally burning as if I were climbing stairs the whole way or doing squats so that you "feel the burn". I'm not sure why. I've done heaps of stretching since the run and I stopped to stretch during and before but it is like the muscles are tensed up and won't relax fully any more. It is pretty painful... the closest thing I can think of is that it is similar to the "pumped up" feeling you get with mild shin splints.

I've done more walking than other weeks and since I'm running for distance I think I've upped my running time quite a bit lately. hmmmm Maybe I will have to pull it back a bit. I don't want to give up the walking to work. I think next week I will switch to a 30 min run twice a week and then go the 5K distance on my "long run" weekend. I was planning to do this initially but got caught up in enjoying going the distance. Maybe I just bit off too much too fast. I need to learn to be gentle with myself in this running life.

The other thing I noticed was that even with the walking, I covered my distance in about 35 minutes. That means I'm running a good little pace (for me anyway). I think part of the problem is that as slow as I run, any slower is really a walk but this pace I used for 4.5K is similar to my 3K pace and properly is should be a bit slower. I'll need to be careful with that until I get to the point that I can run a bit faster on short runs. hmmmm

Who knew this whole running thing would give me so much to think about. I kind of like that there is a strategy involved. I want to learn this whole pacing thing. This is great! There are definitely lots of things I'm learning that I will be able to keep motivated with once the C25K progam is done with.

Re: Anyone else start the C25k (April 21-27)? ((NOW IN WEEK 8!))

Serious Chick - I try to run on both grass and concrete so as my legs become accustomed to both. Initially, I was confused by your message when you said you would run tomorrow and take Friday off...Where I am tomorrow is Friday.(Brisbane, Australia). +Good luck with the run on Saturday. :x +

I am only at W5D2 so fun runs are still a way off for me. I have my husband running with me but I don't know if I'll get him on an official run. I suppose I can only ask. But so far his response is "I'm running and it's something I never wanted to do". But it's nice to have him along for the company.

In the beginning I had my daughter (14yo and 5ft 8 already) jogging with me, but her bones are outgrowing her ligaments and muscles at the moment so soreness is a big problem.

Re: Anyone else start the C25k (April 21-27)? ((NOW IN WEEK 8!))
Amy, when I walk home from work it involves climbing a hill between 200 and 300 meters up . In places it is as steep as climbing stairs. I wonder if that would do something similar to strength training. I did have that kind of soreness in my legs before the run started. I wonder if there is anything i can do to aleviate it. I'm sort of aching all over now. ugh.

Re: Anyone else start the C25k (April 21-27)? ((NOW IN WEEK 8!))
I completed my pseduo-W7D1 yesterday with (3) 8ish minute runs (I ran for the length of two songs, so it varied from 7-8.5 minutes). I think I may be coming down with something, I am feeling more tired than I ought to be and I'm kind of achy in my joints. The run last night felt like I really pushed myself, then I look at it and think, I'm still doing intervals, why is this feeling so hard? I'm feeling more muscle fatigue than I have in the past, which seems odd. My knees were sore last night after that run too, but some ice and aleve calmed them down. I'm pretty discouraged that I was feeling really good about my progress running and now I feel like I'm starting over again for some reason. May be the heat, even though the 90 degree heat wave has passed, it was at least 80 in the gym last night. I think the heat affects me more than I realize, I quickly burn out my energy and feel like I have to work a lot harder to complete the run. The next week is supposed to be cooler, I'm hoping my runs will go better then. I'm not planning to run a 5K until August or September, so I have plenty of time to get up to the distance and pace that I want, I'm just frustrated that I feel like I was zipping along and now I'm slogging along. Any one else feeling a little burned out these days?

Re: Anyone else start the C25k (April 21-27)? ((NOW IN WEEK 8!))

Well I had to repeat W7D3 due to the last time I did it I couldn't complete it because of the heat and humidity. Well it was tough, I think because I really hadn't run in almost a week but I did it. My pace was a bit slower 9.44 min. mile but I'm not complaining. I was going to try to move on to W8D1 but I just couldn't. I might try to run again today depending on the temp. Has anyone ran 2 days in a row? I like to give myself a day to recover but tomorrow the temp is back in the 90's and my son has a baseball game. I can't do it in the morning, I just couldn't get up at 4:30 to run, I need my beauty sleep:) .

As for what I wear, I wear running shorts and a wicking tank.

Let me know what you all think about running 2 days in row.

Re: Anyone else start the C25k (April 21-27)? ((NOW IN WEEK 8!))

JennerVT, I've been sore and tired in my legs. I think it is a combo of running for longer than I probably should at this stage (up to 40 min) and doing a lot of steep hill walking. Legs are just toast. I had to get up out of bed and get some ibuprofen and I'm just now waiting for it to kick in because my legs feel like somone had been beating them with a hammer. From the symptoms you are describing I am wondering about potential dehydration or maybe PMS. I feel exactly like you describe without fail right before my TOM. I apologize if that is TMI and I really apologize if you are male LOL If it is a pms thing... I usually just do my best to work through it and drink lots of water and take extra calcium and it will pass. Otherwise if you are feeling a bit burnt out, why not back up even more and reallly slow it down and then head back up the weeks slowly. Or take a few days off and see if you are refreshed by that. Are you eating enough?

Freshairlover, I do think that there was someone running two days in a row a while back. Olivesmarch, was it you? I seem to remember that for that person it worked for a while but they did get to a point where they got really tired and progress got harder until they backed off a bit. I think at this stage the rest days between every run is pretty important. I read recently that runners only improve during the rests between runs, not on the run days. I'm sure many disagree but if you buy that then the rest days are just as much a significant portion of your training as the actual runs so make sure you have enough high quality rest.

Re: Anyone else start the C25k (April 21-27)? ((NOW IN WEEK 8!))

I went to the doctor yesturday and found out my cold was bronchitis. I don't know what's wrong with me. Three weeks ago I had strep, and now this. The kids seem to get over their colds in like 2 or 3 days (which I'm happy about, but mine always turn into something. so annoying)! So after taking 4 days off (which seemed like a lifetime ago) I managed to run this morning, in a total fog due to the cough medicine they gave me, and had my best run yet! :D I ran W8D1 today. I guess I'm running for distance now too, I ran 2.93 miles in 33 min. It turns out to be an 11:15 min mile, but I didn't stop and ran 7 minutes longer than last week. So I'm happy to keep the heart rate up longer.

Amy you are running an awesome time.

His sinfulness I bet you're running a lot faster than you think you are if those times include the 5 minute warm up walk. I must admit I don't warm up AT ALL!! I stretch some before starting my jog and then pick up the pace after about 8 minutes or so, but that's it. I don't cool down either accept for the stretching afterwards.

Serious chick good luck Saturday! Are you pumped??

Wee little me it sounds to me like you might be low on postassium. Do you eat banana's? It sounds silly, but when I get leg cramps in general, and I mean just because it doesn't have anything to do with running, I always eat a banana or two for a couple of days until I notice my legs feeling normal again and then try to remember and eat 1/2 a banana before running and I don't seem to have a problem.

My pooch isn't doing very well. The medicine they gave him after his surgery made him sick and he hasn't eaten anything in almost 24 hours. All night he walked around panting. He was standing up and walking from one side of the bed to the other. I think he had a fever. We are waiting to get a call back from the vet. Wish us luck!

Re: Anyone else start the C25k (April 21-27)? ((NOW IN WEEK 8!))

Thanks for the tip about the bananas. I have been eating them but also I've been craving them so maybe I'll try giving in to the craving a bit more for the next few days. Your saying that reminded me that magnesium is thought to be an issue for cramps too eh and it is true that if I even point my toes today I'm getting a super charlie horse in my whole leg.I'm drinking lots but sweating heaps when I run so we could be on to something. I noticed after my last run there were salt marks on my running tights when they dried! So I'll give it a go.

Re your pup. I am SO sorry to hear that. Our boy has had a lot of troubles with his health over the last year and I totally can relate to how hard it is to watch them when they are pacing and panting like that. My heart goes out you you and your pupper. You are in my thoughts for sure. I hope the vet can give some help and good news.

RJ,
When my St. Bernard was having a hard time handling her normal food after surgery, the vet told us to offer her small amounts (like a few teaspoons) of baby food meats (chicken, turkey, or veal). It is so ground up that it's very digestible and very bland so it won't upset the stomach. Good luck with the recovery.

I'll be checking my running pace this weekend - I'm hoping my actual pace will be a pleasant surprise! :)

Re: Anyone else start the C25k (April 21-27)? ((NOW IN WEEK 8!))

Thanks guys! I took him back in today and they said his panting was due to the pain he was in. They gave him 4 shots. Pain med's, anti-inflammatory meads, antibiotics, and anti nausea. This should get him through the next 24 hours. I'll definately try the baby food.

Can't wait to see your time without the warm up walk.

Re: Anyone else start the C25k (April 21-27)? ((NOW IN WEEK 8!))

RJ, I also hope your doggie responds better to his medicine soon.

and also

Can I just say

TWENTY MINUTES - - IN YOUR FACE PE TEACHERS EVERYWHERE

I was going to do 14 minutes this evening but found I had some energy left, so just kept going - and did twenty no stopping!! Now it seems possible to do more - because I didn't even have to gasp 'bleedinell' at the end. I am elated. I feel like I'm finally catching up a bit.. I'm starting to feel like 30 minutes is not an impossible dream.

In the meantime - to Jenner - do not worry if one run goes peculiar. I mean two days ago I thought I would collapse after 12 minutes, but here I am having utterly smashed my previous efforts.. it must have to do with so many factors - weather, mood, hydration, time of the month, what you've been doing in the day, attitude, humidity, what you're wearing, a sensible pace or otherwise..

So do not fret and just look forwards I'd say.

Everyone is doing great! I'm jealous since I can't go out and run now. Who would have thought I'd get that attached to running! I went to the doctor today and I have bursitis and tendonitis. The doctor said don't run if it hurts, and it hurts even to walk, so I won't be running anytime real soon. Hopefully in a couple of weeks. She gave me some exercises to do to strengthen my thighs. Hopefully that works.

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement, hopefully tonight's run goes better (I'm shooting for the whole 25 minutes, yikes). Epona-great job breaking through!! I loved your "in your face" comment, haha. RJ-sorry about your dog, hopefully he has a speedy recovery.
