Repeated Week 5 Runners Knee (Brace or Band)

I started week 5 last week and stopped after day one, my left knee was killing me. I bought a new pair of shoes, and restarted week 5 this week and just finished day 2. I've fought shin splints the entire month, but have been able to keep them in check.

However, after two days I'm starting to feel pain in my knee again and am worried about needing to stop again. Does anyone recommend wearing a knee brace or a knee band while running to help with runners knee. I've heard conflicting reports, anyone seen anything about the benefit of wearing knee support, other than from the knee support companies?

Sounds to me like you are at the beginning stages of ITBS (Iliotibial Band Syndrome). I'm sure you've heard a lot about it up until now, read about it, stressed about it and are losing sleep over it :). Most runners experience this at one time or another. I will say that it is often caused due to a sudden increase in training, a lot of hills etc. One of the big things that comes to mind, especially because you said you've been battling shin splints the last month, is the fact that you may be wearing improper shoes (unless that new shoe is the right one and it just hasn't had time to do its thing). I work at a running specialty store and all of what you have said, is a pretty good sign that you are not in the right shoe (probably a shoe that isn't supporting your foot and biomechanics the way that it should be). My initial guess is that you need a more supportive shoe. I would go to your local running specialty store (if you have one) and have them take a look at your feet, watch you walk...and do their thing (I'm not talking Big 5). If you have any questions feel free to send them my way! Good luck - stretch, ice and remember - sometimes less is more.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor in any way, shape or form. I am just an experienced runner, work at a running specialty store, and have dealt with several cases of running "issues". My advice here is also assuming that your knee pain is more lateral. If the pain is in an entirely different location, there are other suggestions that I could give. :)

I agree with wondering soul. How ever I was sidelined the last 2 weeks because of my knee. I had fluid on it brought on from working. not exercise. I wore an elastic brace and took anti-inflamatories. Then went to a more supportive brace. I ran Tuesday wiht out it hurting. Yes try a brace and get a shoe fit. If it still hurts you need to seek professional advice.

Good luck

Vicki

Welcome to active.com! I had knee tendonitis this past winter during my marathon training and had some success with a knee band that straps right under the joint (along with a lot of cross training, especially on an elliptical machine). I tried a brace, but couldn't stand the bulk and felt that it restricted my motion too much to be comfortable. I think it's probably best to visit a good orthopedist to get it checked out. In the meantime, here's an article well worth reading:
