June 9 - 15
I've been gradually building up weekly distance since post-Boston
recovery. And this week was a cut-back week. June is a busy
month for racing. Last week ended with a 5K race on Friday, a 6.6
mile race on Saturday, and a near 20 mile run on Sunday. So there
was a lot of slow running this week.

A dog bit me on the back of my leg on Wednesday. It's a small, yapping
dog that has run out into the road to chase me before. But this
is the first time I have been bitten. It wasn't a deep wound, but
there was some minor bleeding and swelling. According to the
owner, I'm the only person that the dog chases. This happened in
my neighborhood where I run almost every day, so I'm not willing
to give up running down that road. The owner is going to have
to control her dog.

Monday - 6 miles @ 9:23
Tuesday - 6.2 miles @ 9:43
Wednesday - AM - 6 miles, inc. 10x100m strides, @ 8:36
PM - 4.62 miles @ 8:39
Thursday - AM - 6.2 miles @ 8:56
PM - 4 miles @ 8:25
Friday - 6 miles @ 7:41
Saturday - 9.4 miles @ 8:29
Sunday - 7 miles, inc. 5 mile race @ 6:01
(missed 30:00 net time by 3 seconds!)

Miles for the week: 55

How was everyone else's training this week?

Re: Fall Marathon Thread: June 8 - 14
Hi everyone. I've watched this thread on and off for the past few months and think I'm ready to join in. I ran my first marathon in May, and am running the Baltimore Marathon in October (Goal: 3:00). I'll be using the Pfitzinger 55 mpw plan which I started this past week.

Monday - 45 minutes on the bike at the gym, weights, core, and a 30 minute stretching session
Tuesday - 7 miles in 54:36 - 7:47 avg and 10 x 100 strides
Wednesday - Weights, core, and stretching
Thursday - 9 miles in 1:10:34 - 7:50 avg
Friday - Core
Saturday - 4 miles in 34:03 - 8:31 avg - Got chased by dogs 3 different times within a span of 2 miles
Sunday - 12 miles in 1:35:14 - 7:55 avg - Ran in Pittsburgh, ridiculously hilly. 1st 3 @ 8:29, 4-9 @ 7:52, 10-12 @ 7:33

Total - 32 miles

Overall I was very happy with this week. The run on Sunday was a bit of a challenge, I had an asthma attack during my marathon in May, and I started getting chest pains again today around mile 8 or 9. It's the first time it's happened since the race and I think it's allergy-related, so hopefully it won't happen again. It seems to only happen when I run for well over an hour. Hope everyone else has good weeks of training to report.

Beatfreq, hopefully the dog bite heals up quickly, it's always a pain when you have to suffer because someone isn't controlling their dog. Other than that looks like your training is going pretty well.

I was beginning to think you guys had all disappeared.

Mon - off
Tue - off
Wed - off
Thur - 5.3 miles @ 9:04
Fri - 8.8 miles @ 8:52
Sat - 4.2 Miles @ 9:15
Sun - 13.83 Miles @ 8:35 incl 6.38km at 4.38/km (7.00MM)

Total weekly = 31.9 miles

I took off Four days after my last marathon in Ottawa and then went back running but I had some shin and calf pain in my left leg that was bothering me so I stopped and took off four more days. When I returned on Thursday, I was as cranky as ever and felt just as bad as I left off. Since then things have improved with each run. However, I still have a lot of issues going on with my left leg. A slight calf pain (more when I walk). Shin pain, plus my heel seems a little strain and in addition I am feeling a slight pinched nerve running from my hip along the outside of my leg then around the back of the a calf. Some times my foot aches slightly when I flex it during lift off. I can run through the pain but it makes my run uncomfortable. (Basically the entire left leg just seem traumatized) I think it has to do with running on the side of the road. I f I run with the left foot in the lower end of a sloped sidewalk or road I will get some relief.

Beatfreq
Great to here from you. I am following the Pfitzinger schedule you sent me. Sorry, to here about the Dog bite. I hope you got a doctor to check things out (rabies or any other possible infection) just to be on the safe side. Your neighbor seems a little nonchalant about her dog biting someone. What is up with her statement about the fact that you are the only one her dog chases after. It might not make for good neighbor relations but I would strongly recommend that you report the bite.

Looking at your report you seem to be going good. I am still smarting from my failure to BQ in Ottawa but I hoping to do it in the fall.

Sun 16 miles @ 8:38 mpm

Total for week 63.3 miles

I am nursing a left leg that seem to have all kinds of little issues that are very very slooowly fading away. However, I am happy to say that at least I am able to get in my runs. On Sunday, I ran an 8.67-mile loop and then took my kids on their bikes running with me for the rest of my run. They had a wonderful time and so did I except that I ran a little too fast trying to keep up while marshalling them at the stop lights and intersections. Saturday I had to take them to their final swim meet for the season and did not get to run. I returned on Sunday to the said meet and did not get to run until in the afternoon.

I still do not feel fully recovered from my last marathon not sure what it is but I just do not feel that spring back yet in my step. Hope that will change soon. I have a HM coming up in July and I am going to run a 5k with my son the day before.

Another good week of base training, no chest pains this week
so that's a good sign. I think allergy season is pretty much over
in this part of the country now.

Ewart, glad to hear your leg's gradually getting better and that
you're managing to get all your training in. Out of curiousity,
how long ago was your marathon and what's your training
looked like since then?

Hi Stoken

My last Marathon was on May 25 so exactly a month ago. I took 4 days off then went back out for 4 days I then took another 4 days off and have been slowly ramping miles back up since then.

Re: Fall Marathon Thread: June 16 - 22

Hi Everyone,

This is a great thread and very timely as I'm going to start focusing more on the fall marathon in July.

Last week:
Day 1: 2.5 mile warmup, 5M (tough) trail run series: 32:11, 1M cooldown

Day 2: 5.2 recovery run @ 9:14/mi

Day 3: track, 12 x 400's, w/ 200 jog/rest, 4 @82, 4 @ 80/81, 4 @ 79/80, + about 6M combined warmup and cooldown

Day 4: recovery run, 4M recovery run (not sure pace)

Day 5: 7M, low @ 9:04/mi

Day 6: 16M long run, hilly course, @ 8:01/mi

Day 7: 5M recovery at 9:22/mi

Overall at great week for me and a new weekly mileage high about 55. I was a bit more sore than usual but I attribute this to the new mileage high plus the addition of the trail race on Monday (1st this year).

I'd be interested in hearing more about Pfitzinger as I don't have a precise marathon training plan as of yet.

All the best to everyone in their training.

Chrisbougopoulis great to have you on the thread. Here is a link to one of his programs on line. http://www.runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=4432&PageNum=1

If you are willing to pony up the cash you could purchase one of his book from Amozon he was a great coach. Additionally, if you google his name I am sure you could find out a lot about him and his training methods. I will post anything I have when I find the time.

Re: Fall Marathon Thread: June 16 - 22

Hi Guys,

It's good to see this thread back up and running. I'll be checking regularly to see how you are all doing. Good to see you are recovering Ewart, and some nice performances from you post-Boston, Beatfreq.

I'm still undecided as to whether I will be going for another marathon this year. I'm currently keeping up similiar mileage to the mileage I prepared for London with (35-40 miles) but usually with just a 1/2m length long run a week, nothing longer. I've got a 5k next Monday and a couple of 10k's in July/August, so I'm hoping to get these times down to 18 and change & 38 dead. I had a marathon picked out for late September, but a close friends Wedding has put paid to that. I may still do one but I'm running out of options. I have seen an early winter marathon that looks possible (Hastings Marathon - 14th December) so I will ponder this one(as it'd give me more time to train). But I will only do this if I feel I can commit to 50+ miles a week.

Good running to you all.

Cheers,

Robin

Re: Fall Marathon Thread: June 16 - 22
Hi everyone, guess I'll start off the training reports from this past week.

Mon - 45 min bike, weights, core and stretching
Tue - 8 @ 7:35 w/4 @ 6:28 (LT pace) Splits - 6:26 - 6:33 - 6:25 - 6:24
Wed - AM - Weights, core and stretching
PM - 4 @ 8:51
Thur - 10 @ 7:43
Fri - Core
Sat - 4 @ 8:37
Sun - 14 @ 7:51, 1-4 @ 8:26, 5-10 @ 7:43, 11-14 @ 7:31

Total - 40 miles

A pretty good week for me overall. I was very happy with Tuesday's lactate threshold session,
it went smoothly even though it was my first real speedwork since my last marathon.
I narrowly escaped being bitten by a dog on Saturday, other than that another uneventful week of
base building. Hope everyone else is making good progress towards their fall marathon goals.

Cheers,

Dan

Here goes my week.

Mon - Did not run
Tue -7miles @ 8:35 mpm
Wed - 8.67 @ 9.28 mpm
Thu -
Wed -
Fri -
Sat - 1 mile warm up before weight training
Sun - 2 miles warm up before weight training

Total 18.67 miles

I am still plagued by a shin pain and a sort of pinch nerve in my left leg that just does not seem to want to go away. It makes running uncomfortable though not impossible. However, it is causing me great concern so I have decided to just take a long break and see if it will go away. In the mean time, I have decided to start back weight training that I had stopped for over a year now. However, I am finding it difficult to just stop running and already this week I have done a 5.3mile and a 7.2 mile trek and I am still experiencing all the usual pain in my left leg. I am going to go out a buy myself a new pair of running shoes and see if that will help.

I really envy you guys. This is quiet a disappointment for me as I need to train for my fall Marathon where I hope to BQ and I also have a annual HM in my area towards the end of July where I was hoping to do a sub 1:30 finish.

Hey Everyone! Good to hear about the training. Ewart, hang in there time will heal things.

My last week goes like this:

Mon: 5.2M Trail Run (this time even harder and longer due to a broken bridge) 34:02, with 2.5M warmup and 1M cooldown

Tues: Recovery run: 4.5M, felt sore

Wed: Track, 3 x 400,400,800 with 200,200,400 jog in between: 1st: 82sec,82, 2:46, 2nd: 82, 82, 2:46, 3rd: 80, 79, 2:42 with 4M warmup and 2M cooldown

Thurs: 6.2M @ 8:19/mi pace

Fri:Off

Sat: 8.85m @ 8:39/mi pace

Sun: 10M @ 8:42/mi pace. I was supposed to get in 14M here but a very busy weekend didn't provide the time and energy. Total about 48.5

Best to everyone for a good week!
