As a Spinning instructor I'm a little put off by the organizers telling me I have to fundraise $250 to be able to teach a segment of the Spinning Nation event. I'm already donating my time, what's up with that? Anybody else feel this way?
Scott here, from Sportsgrants the company producing Spinning Nation. We
felt that instructors would want to "lead from the front" to keep the
purpose of the event (providing effective fundraising for three
charities) at the forefront. I hope you'll join us. If you have any
questions, feel free to contact us anytime at info@sportsgrants.org.
Sorry i don't agree with you. I would hope there are no more instructors out there that feel the way you do. $250.00 is such a small amount to raise.
I hope you would reconsider and raise as much as you can.

I agree with Brett!
I just "re-read" my post and agreed with the wrong user! Having (the best) instructors donate their time to teach, promote the event and recruit riders is enough!
Fundraising is always a lot of work and it is hard to ask people to support you when you know they are asked all the time...
That said, I do think it is important for Instructors to lead by example - would you ask your classes to do a seated climb while you were cruising along with no resistance?
Your time is valuable and that is an important part of the contribution you will make. The fundraising component will allow us to make this a big event - and you are getting a free jersey and shorts for donating your time so it's really a pretty good deal all the way around.
Just my $.02.
Jen,
I love the analogy you use! That is exactly our intention.
In addition to a jersey and shorts, instructors also get a Spinning Nation bag and t-shirt.
Thanks for your support!
Best,
Spinning Nation
HMMMM! One question! what is the minimum donation requirement for spinning Nation and/or the heathclubs?
Okay, so I think your question is valid although your feelings come through loud and clear and that is not always the most effective way to start a conversation.
Asking if the Club where you will be teaching would consider leading by example and making a cash donation to the event is a great idea. One word of caution, you will get farther if you pitch it to them on how it will benefit them from a marketing standpoint vs. complaining about how this event is structured.
I can't speak for Spinning Nation in terms of donation. My guess is that if it is like most fundraisers by the time the organizers pay for all the printed materials, t-shirts, jerseys, shorts, bags, etc. that they have to use as incentives to get people to participate in the event they are normally making a considerable donation. I am sure the budget for the hosting the event is quite large. No one would want money the participants raise to go for paying for these freebies to entice participants.
I wonder if one solution, since you were willing to commit your time during the event, would be to just make a donation to the charity of your choice in the amount equal to what you would be paid during the event?
As my Grandmother taught me to ask myself, "Will this matter in a year?" I find that choosing to view the world in this way helps me live a happy life - whether it is someone who cut me off in traffic or my making a mess in the bathroom.
In Peace.
As a part of Spinning Nation, the facilities are asked to provide a space for the event so that those who choose to participate can raise donations. The clubs are about providing a space, while instructors and riders (you great people!) are about rasing donations and having fun!
Those who are complaining about fundraising are in the wrong line of business. It is not that Instructors should have to fundraise, they should want to based on the three great charities.
I am riding 5 hours and am more the glad to tap into my contacts and see if they want to take part of a great event by sponsoring 1-5 hours of the ride. It is a considerable amount of work, but then again it is for a great cause.
